A group of friends have given us a very generous gift of a night away to mark a special occasion. They were nervous about a voucher in the current climate so have given us the cash. Which is great because we can go anywhere!
We are happy to add some money to it for the right place, but might tag on an extra night so I'd say budget is £150 to £200 a night.

Our usual approach would be to choose the location and find a nice hotel nearby. But then I thought it might be good to choose a fabulous hotel in a place we might not have considered.

Would want it to be expensive because it's a lovely hotel, not because it is an average hotel e.g. in the centre of London.

Have spent a lot of time in London with work so wouldn't have this night away there. We also wouldn't go as far as Cornwall for a short break.would prefer somewhere different to where we have been over last few years ( so probably not Dorset, New Forest, East. Sussex and Norfolk although would consider for the perfect hotel) Otherwise happy to go pretty much anywhere.
A decent pool, inside or out would be a bonus.
Suggestions for places you have stayed or know people who have raved about a certain place would be very welcome.
Thank you

Grantley Hall hotel near Ripon is the most luxurious, lavish hotel in the UK at the moment (or so I’m led to believe). It is absolutely amazing. There’s even a snow room in the spa. Michelin * restaurant too.

BadgertheBodger · 24/05/2021 22:18

Another Place, Ullswater. The pool is to die for

Candlesinthewind · 24/05/2021 22:28

The Luton Hoo. Main house not annexes though.

I love historical and quirky and really enjoyed staying here, at Anne Boleyn’s home, Hever Castle in Kent.
You get to have breakfast in a magnificent Tudor Hall, can wander round the gardens in the morning before they’re opened to the public, there’s a lovely pub in walking distance to the Castle, and you get free entry to the Castle as part of your visit.
No pool, unless you fancy a dip in the moat!

The inn at whitewall, clitheroe. Gorgeous.

Iamthewombat · 24/05/2021 22:41

Grantley Hall is fabulous but you won’t get much there for under £200!

I really rate the Grosvenor in Chester. Feels genuinely luxurious for a price that isn’t barking mad, and its restaurant has a Michelin star.

ShakespearesSisters · 24/05/2021 22:44

Omg, thought I'd look up Grantley Hall. Wowser, cheapest room was £500 but they must be all booked until autumn. Most are over £1000, or you can have the Royal suite for £2900 a night. Looks amazing though.

Backwell house near Bristol is stunning, beautiful views, friendly staff and within that price range. Every time we’ve stayed there it’s felt like a really special treat.

SkedaddIe · 24/05/2021 22:57

The Aviator hotel in Farnborough is really amazing. People who have private jets stop there when on route to London.

I other hand went for an anniversary as a shopping trip detour on route to Bristol. I definitely felt poor but not unwelcome lol.

The Fish in the Cotswolds. Really lovely.

TheDogsMother · 24/05/2021 23:03

Limewood in the the New Forest is gorgeous and a sister hotel to the The Pig group.

The Witchery in Edinburgh! We stayed in one of their apartments when we got married. The Balmoral in Edinburgh is also beautiful.
Also The Witchery in Edinburgh. I stayed in same suite as Kate Moss and Matt Groening before me 😁
chestnutmares · 24/05/2021 23:04

Prestonfield in Edinburgh is just gorgeous and a bit different.

BanditoShipman · 24/05/2021 23:07

Thornbury Castle near Bristol, the Henry VIii room is where I got engaged

RainbowMum11 · 24/05/2021 23:10

Ragdale Hall - it's a hotel & spa and by far the best place I have ever been to for luxury, service & facilities. It's Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.
The food is excellent too.

wheresmymojo · 24/05/2021 23:14

It's not a big grand castle but we stayed in this boutique hotel in Bath and it was wonderfully quirky

Ooh I stayed at 15 great pulteney Street too, loved it.

Springchickpea · 24/05/2021 23:23

I really like The Elvetham, just outside Fleet. Really beautiful building in lovely grounds

JW13 · 24/05/2021 23:27

The Newt in Somerset (but probably too expensive). They have incredible gardens you can visit as well. One Bruton is also in Somerset and quite nearby, but more reasonable and has a great restaurant.

The Rectory in Wiltshire (Malmesbury).

FluffyMcWuffy · 24/05/2021 23:28

The Vineyard at Stockcross is fantastic (www.the-vineyard.co.uk), amazing rooms and fabulous restaurant. especially nice if you like wine :-)

Nancydrawn · 24/05/2021 23:29

The Newt in Somerset is gorgeous but both very booked and very pricey.

The Pig at Coombe is lovely and more reasonable.

But everything's pretty booked right now, truth be told.

Nancydrawn · 24/05/2021 23:30

Cross--post, JW13. Great minds. You're so right about the gardens.

We had a fabulous weekend at Stapleford, an utterly beautiful place.

We've also stayed at burgh island mentioned upthread. Nice but in a very different way. If you don't like art deco, this one is not for you.

bunnybutts · 24/05/2021 23:37

The Witchery in Edinburgh. Bit more than your budget though
