A group of friends have given us a very generous gift of a night away to mark a special occasion. They were nervous about a voucher in the current climate so have given us the cash. Which is great because we can go anywhere!
We are happy to add some money to it for the right place, but might tag on an extra night so I'd say budget is £150 to £200 a night.

Our usual approach would be to choose the location and find a nice hotel nearby. But then I thought it might be good to choose a fabulous hotel in a place we might not have considered.

Would want it to be expensive because it's a lovely hotel, not because it is an average hotel e.g. in the centre of London.

Have spent a lot of time in London with work so wouldn't have this night away there. We also wouldn't go as far as Cornwall for a short break.would prefer somewhere different to where we have been over last few years ( so probably not Dorset, New Forest, East. Sussex and Norfolk although would consider for the perfect hotel) Otherwise happy to go pretty much anywhere.
A decent pool, inside or out would be a bonus.
Suggestions for places you have stayed or know people who have raved about a certain place would be very welcome.
Thank you

@userintgerain

Lumley castle is stunning
That's my ancestoral home - according to my mum's family tree ... don't think I'd get a free night there though 😆

We love Warwick Hall near Hexham, have been there twice and going again in July. The rooms are wonderful and the staff so friendly. It has a pool, spa and the grounds are lovely.

Chewton Glen in the New Forest - lovely stay, love the way you got a little pack of water & home made flapjacks for your journey home (pre-covid)

One of our favourite hotels is the Midland Hotel in Morecambe. Lovely restaurant, Art Deco architecture. And if your are lucky with the weather, an absolutely stunning view over the bay.

@katy1213

I think you're seriously under-estimating the cost of beautiful hotels.
Very much this, applied to posters making unsuitable suggestions. Grantley Hall has been suggested several times even though it costs a mint of money and several posters have noted that it is way above the OP’s budget!

Depends on what you like, country house or modern, large or small, rural or city break. Narrow this down and your choice will be easier to define.

All of the above! We are keen to explore more of the UK so will take a look at all the suggestions, and make a list of places we'd like to visit other times, not just for our 'gift night'.

I liked crazy bear stadhampton, sure a lot of folks might consider it rather vulgar and garish though! Some of the best Thai food I’ve had.

You will usually get a significantly better rate at a non business hotel if you can include a Sunday night (and probably best to avoid a Saturday at anywhere that could host weddings!).

Alistair Sawdays or Mr & Mrs Smith websites might be good places to start looking:

In/around Bath in order of price look at
Gainsborough ££££ (own natural hot water spa, and central)
Royal Crescent ££££ (lovely grounds and Spa)
The Priory £££ (lovely garden and Spa and pool - about a 30 minute walk from town)

Car Drive:
Lucknam Park £££ - huge grounds and riding school
Homewood Park ££ - Modern, quirky style (the owners also own The Bird in Bath)

There are some cheaper options in Bath like Combe Grove or the Apex (but not visited).

I like the Pig chain (the one near Bath definitely doesn't have a pool).

Luton Hoo is gorgeous with lots of history, lovely grounds, a spa, pool and outdoor swimming in the lake. The service is excellent.

Hever Castle B&B is great. Lovely décor and guests have out of hours access to the grounds. There's an outdoor pool in the summer.

The Witchery in Edinburgh is amazing but budget busting.

ChequerBoard · 25/05/2021 17:48

For you budget the Hotel Du Vin hotel chain sounds like it could fit the bill. Usually lovely old houses/hotels that have been restored and kitted out to a high standard. Suites have nice additional facilities like slipper baths etc.

Flyonawalk · 25/05/2021 18:01

Another vote for Chewton Glen - the tree-houses are fun. In Oxford, the Old Parsonage and the Old Bank are excellent and well-run.

fluffiphlox · 25/05/2021 20:58

£150 isn’t going to go far in that market.

emmetgirl · 25/05/2021 21:08

The Idle Rocks at St Mawes. Perfect.

weegiepower · 25/05/2021 21:14

Cliveden, but would need to add to the budget realistically

TropicalFairyCake · 25/05/2021 21:21

Is the landmark trust still running? We stayed in some amazing national trust esque places. Or try NT...

Pootle40 · 25/05/2021 22:28

Looking at all really amazing hotels myself many are charging £300+ per night at the moment.

DrRamsesEmerson · 25/05/2021 22:33

I vote for the Hotels du Vin - quite a few of them do there's bound to be one in a good location for you. I've stayed in Brighton, Stratford-on-Avon and Newcastle and all were lovely.

I live in Newcastle and the hotel du vin here has a dreadful restaurant. Never stayed but definitely don't eat there!
Chemenger · 26/05/2021 09:27

I've stayed in the Hotel du Vin in Henley, it's nice but the rooms facing the courtyard are very noisy if people are drinking outside. It is in a good location and its a lovely town to wander round.

Carriemac · 26/05/2021 12:38

I had a panic attack in malmaison Oxford as the room is an actual prison cell - well 2 knocked together and I'm
Claustrophobic

happylittlevegemites · 26/05/2021 12:43

The Swan at Lavenham is lovely! They have a great resteraunt and the town is fab.

MsSquiz · 26/05/2021 13:09

The Witchery in Edinburgh (we stayed in the Inner Sanctum)

Crab Manor in North Yorkshire (we stayed in Ruka Lodge)

Rudding Park near Harrogate

Next on my hit list is a spa lodge at The Gilpin in the Lakes. SIL recommended it after they visited for BIL's birthday

Mammyofonlyone · 26/05/2021 18:29

@userintgerain

Also, I've never stayed but always wanted to - the crab and lobster
It's over rated, there are much nicer places in the area! I'd spend my money there
bringmelaughter · 26/05/2021 18:35

The Inn at Whitewell is gorgeous and the trough of Bowland is a beautiful secret. So gorgeous but never busy.
