A group of friends have given us a very generous gift of a night away to mark a special occasion. They were nervous about a voucher in the current climate so have given us the cash. Which is great because we can go anywhere!
We are happy to add some money to it for the right place, but might tag on an extra night so I'd say budget is £150 to £200 a night.

Our usual approach would be to choose the location and find a nice hotel nearby. But then I thought it might be good to choose a fabulous hotel in a place we might not have considered.

Would want it to be expensive because it's a lovely hotel, not because it is an average hotel e.g. in the centre of London.

Have spent a lot of time in London with work so wouldn't have this night away there. We also wouldn't go as far as Cornwall for a short break.would prefer somewhere different to where we have been over last few years ( so probably not Dorset, New Forest, East. Sussex and Norfolk although would consider for the perfect hotel) Otherwise happy to go pretty much anywhere.
A decent pool, inside or out would be a bonus.
Suggestions for places you have stayed or know people who have raved about a certain place would be very welcome.
Thank you

Big fan of The Pig chain, really like the one in Bridge in Kent and there is a great foodie pub nearby too if you want to mix up the dining options. Studland one gorgeous too.

If you can push the budget a bit then Beaverbrook or Pennyhill Park are both gorgeous places to stay. Midweek options are better value.

Rockcliffe Hall, Yorebridge house (Yorkshire dales) Middleton Lodge, Grantley hall all gorgeous

The Randolph Hotel in Oxford but im biased because i got married there and im a huge Inspector Morse fan. Unfortunately i think its been bought out by an American company now so wont be the same.

@Nancydrawn Great minds! I think it's almost impossible to find availability there at the moment but it is amazing. I would love to go back but would take the gardens/and garden 'cafe' (aka full scale restaurant) if I could!

I think you're seriously under-estimating the cost of beautiful hotels.

Cowley Manor. Mind you, it’s at least 12 years since I last stayed there, so it might have gone downhill ....

No I do appreciate that there are many hotels which cost way more but I also know that there are plenty within £150-£200 budget. There may even be some little gems that cost less. Often the location is beautiful, rather than the hotel itself which I know will increase the cost but still within my budget.

Beautiful hotel in a beautiful location with an amazing restaurant monachylemhor.net/

Depends how long you're going for as I get the impression you're not close to Scotland

I’ve always wanted to go there but it doesn’t get great reviews. I have been many times for coffee but it is reviewed as overpriced and the service underwhelming. What was your experience?
mermaidsariel · 25/05/2021 08:10

@Melitza

The Inn on the Lake at Ullswater.
Been there and hated it. Sorry.
actiongirl1978 · 25/05/2021 08:13

Limewood in the new forest.

Cliveden (we had the astor suite via last minute. Com in 2003, it was pretty special)

One of the hotels above hosted our university ball and my only memory is holding back my friends hair while they puked in the loos!

In the thread above, not my suggestions Grin

Prestonfield in Edinburgh is just gorgeous and a bit different.
Definitely recommend this, same owner as the Witcher but bigger and more sumptuous. The service is perfect and the food is great.
CMOTDibbler · 25/05/2021 08:26

My room itself wasn't that exciting (but it was a super cheap mid week deal, and I was in the area for work), but The Ickworth has to be the most beautiful setting for a hotel I've ever been in, and I've been to a lot. Walking the grounds in the evening with no crowds was super special

Roselilly36 · 25/05/2021 08:28

We enjoyed our stay at Southampton Harbour Hotel & Spa, stayed for a special anniversary, the hotel is on the waterfront and looks like a cruise ship. Lovely service. Very modern hotel. Lots to do, restaurants & bars around the harbour. Would recommend. We stayed in a suite for a couple of nights. But probably a little over your planned budget.

Depends on what you like, country house or modern, large or small, rural or city break. Narrow this down and your choice will be easier to define.

Wherever you chose, have an amazing time.

ELCSPlease · 25/05/2021 08:29

I've stayed in the penthouse at Seaham Hall and it was wonderful!
Also Waterton Park Hotel - we stayed on the building where you cross over the bridge and it was one of the most memorable trips I've ever took with DH.

Love this hotel. Lovely but not 'stuffy'. Jeans fine for dinner, cosy. But great rooms and food was super.

LemonRoses · 25/05/2021 08:39

Depends what you are wanting from a hotel.
Carey Arms is lovely but so is Cliveden. In London the Langham is our personal favourite, but there are more modern ones others prefer.

We like the Gainsborough in Bath it Royal Crescent is good too.

We choose hotels with outdoor pools so love Lodore Falls in Keswick, Ellenborough Park near Cheltenham.

Duke of Richmond in St Peter Port is nice.

Our surprising choice is Combe Grove Manor near Bath as it’s a social enterprise and puts back into the community. Good facilities, excellent food and slightly quirky in a lovely setting. Not as ‘perfect’ as some much more expensive hotels but we’ve never been disappointed in service and ambience.

I would never go back there, offhand bordering on rude service, very expensive. It was a long time ago though and I think the management has changed.
