So who's booking a UK summer holiday this year?

Can't cope with the uncertainty of another foreign holiday being cancelled so are staying in the UK again this summer. If the media is to believed; demand is very high so am trying to get something booked asap. Have been trawling various cottage sites and there does seem to be quite a lot booked up for August already. Our favoured areas are Northumberland or perhaps the lakes (found 1 place on the Cumbrian coast which would cover both beach & lakes so am tempted). Anyone else? What companies and areas are you trying? Have tried cottages.com, Northumbria Coast & Country & Sykes so far and am getting myself confused!

Carried over holiday in Norfolk in May.

2 weeks in Pembrokeshire in August that I booked whilst we were there last year.

A long weekend in YHA Bristol.

Spudlet · 01/02/2021 07:29

Cotswolds in August for us. We booked early as we needed a cottage that would take dogs. We normally stay in the uk anyway, due to said hound - he’s too old for kennels and no longer copes well with dog sitters.

The balance isn’t due until July so hopefully we’ll know more by then.

intheshallows · 01/02/2021 07:30

Norfolk in July! Booked a few months ago though and even then most of the nice places were booked up

intheshallows · 01/02/2021 07:31

And it's all fully refundable up until a few days before 😊

TerrifiedOfTrying4No2 · 01/02/2021 07:33

We’re looking to book Devon in the summer at some point; for a half-holiday-half-viewing our wedding venue. Plus it will be DD1’s first holiday

ApolloandDaphne · 01/02/2021 07:36

We have booked a cottage on the banks of Loch Ness for mid June. We can cancel up to mid May so if things don't look great by then we won't lose our money.

MsTSwift · 01/02/2021 07:36

Holding out for Europe. Frankly can’t be bothered booking in uk we live in south west anyway and have our own hot tub so would rather save £ for holiday we really want to go on where it may not be chilly and wet.

Notthisnotthat · 01/02/2021 07:37

We live on the east coast of Scotland but have booked a week in a lodge in a neighbouring LA. I booked it due to it having a rate where we haven't even paid a deposit and can cancel 48 hours before arrival for any reason.

Meant to be in Portugal as we had to cancel last summer and just rolled forward the booking, here's hoping for 2022 for that trip.

MsTSwift · 01/02/2021 07:41

We got away last summer and it was magical. The memories seeing us through these dark months.

Icenii · 01/02/2021 07:46

Booked Isle of Wight last summer for July this year.

Had something booked for March, moved twice from March, to October to March. Think I'll just get a refund. The price goes too high during April and September to move it to. Almost doubled.

Eskarina1 · 01/02/2021 07:54

Booked a week on the same farm we've stayed at for the last two years. Only refundable if forced to close unless they can rebook (the summer has been fully booked since November so I can't see a problem). It's a small site, with lots of space so worst case we'll spend a week exploring the woodlands. Hopefully will get some time on the beach too.

Angel2702 · 01/02/2021 08:40

@LizFlowers

I won't be booking in advance - what would be the point - but if possible, will go away for a few days when the weather is nice, to somewhere fairly easy to get to and self catering.
The point being if it’s anything like last year people will all be trying to book nearer the time and prices last year went through the roof.

We booked this year’s holiday last year. The same holiday has already shot up in price for something very basic. Had we waited we wouldn’t be booking at the inflated prices.

evouk · 01/02/2021 08:50

We have one booked for a week in early July. It's been carried over from last July, hopefully we can go this time

Sunflowergirl1 · 01/02/2021 09:07

We have loads of holidays booked lockdown permitting as we bought a caravan a few years ago to compliment going abroad during the summer and my DH saw this coming and booked 18 months worth of holidays in April 2020.

We were lucky as we had our holiday abroad last year during school holidays but I'm not prepared to put myself through it this year with the risk of getting quarantined etc.

Warning for those going in school holidays...we had to enter a ballot to get a place in July/August. 400 tried and failed I was told. The staycation market is crazy so I'm afraid many will be disappointed.

I'm told a lot of farmers are looking to open fields for camping but frankly it is a bit grim with no other facilities.....but I'm the one who insisted on a top of the range caravan for comfort so it feels a fraud to describe it as camping

Yes booked cornwall june and sept and poss scotland in june .
Had foreign holiday booked for this year ( moved on from last year) and we have moved it on again a year as was for june and didn't think would be possible and even if was with restrictions , so would rather wait as its a holiday of a lifetime for us , so want most out of it .

SoCrimeaRiver · 01/02/2021 09:53

Yep, we'll be going to a cottage in Scotland (in East Mids). We didn't want to book for abroad as we have a fair haired toddler, and because we expected passport control to be a shit show this year, and for the pound to fall against the Euro. We went to one area of Scotland last year, and we're going somewhere else this time. Really looking forward to it.

RaspberryCoulis · 01/02/2021 09:56

We were in Northumberland in October, it's my one of my favourite places. Stunning beaches. I like the Bamburgh - Warkworth - Amble bit.

We have booked a beginning of July break in Dorset. Never been, we've holidayed in Devon and Cornwall before so looking forward to something new.

YessicaHaircut · 01/02/2021 10:10

We’ve got a week in a caravan park booked for late May, the week before half term (I’m on mat leave and will return to work after the half term, school based job). Also a week in a cottage for last week of August. Both in North Devon, same county as us, and booked last summer as we decided we wouldn’t be going abroad for a while! Fingers crossed that both holidays happen; we couldn’t go on what was supposed to be our last childfree holiday in April 2020 so could do with a change of scene and some nice beaches.

rookiemere · 01/02/2021 10:19

We've just booked a back up plan in Scotland (where we are) for Majorca holiday and will move flights and villa booking on to 2022 if required. Even if we can go, we're not prepared to add costs of testing at each end which would be likely to be necessary.

Twixmasdilema · 02/02/2021 07:55

Have booked now - Lake District/Cumbrian Coast, August x

Going to Kingswear for a week in July, Bath for a long weekend as soon as restrictions ease, and will do Bristol and Wales trips throughout the year as allowed.

Onedropbeat · 02/02/2021 08:06

As I’m not too sure what to do
We managed a week in the lakes in September last year but it was horrifically busy that I wouldn’t want to go back outside of school holidays to find it so busy again

We couldn’t even get parked to do the walks we’d planned and couldn’t get any restaurant reservations if we hadn’t pre booked before we went away so had take aways and cooked. Less ideal if you didn’t have self catering facilities though

It didn’t feel like much of a holiday

We always holiday in U.K. and I’m thinking this year might be a write off for us if things end up busier than last year

Especially with the news articles telling everyone how booked up places are already

rookiemere · 02/02/2021 08:17

@Onedropbeat if you look at Booking.com you should be able to find something cancellable up to 2 weeks ahead - or even later if it's a hotel rather than self catering. That's what we've booked - and I need to get organised and book for May half term and - more tricky- some sort of multi cottage back up if we can't share with relatives in the summer.

That’s a great idea

I think we’ll try that.

So many places in the U.K. to see that we haven’t been there’s hopefully going to be something

HmmSureJan · 02/02/2021 08:38

Summer term half term - so first week of June, have booked a cottage in Sussex. Five minutes from the beach, lovely garden, bbq etc - we are in a flat so these things are lovely treats. Can't wait.
