I stayed in a uk B&B last night which I booked for 4 nights. Can I leave after one night and get my money back?

Just that really, the hotel is noisy and a bit tatty, but not cheap. It looked much nicer on photos and booking said we had a sea view but we're looking at the back of other properties and bins. I've paid £360 for 4 nights but just want to leave and find somewhere else. Is it ok to ask for my money back and what are the chances they'll give it?

'I'm surprised at some of the comments, I think £350 is a lot for 4 nights, it must depend where you are in the country.'

That was my point really. If you're in Brighton £90 a night for a double room with a sea view won't get you much in the way of luxury.

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 28/08/2020 08:35

I would have an alternative in place before you leave bearing in mind occupation rates this weekend.

Purplewithred · 28/08/2020 08:44

Yes - we did this over this weekend. Booked for 3 nights but only stayed one and they actually gave us our money back when we pointed out the issues (tiny bedroom, shower not draining, bedside lights fizzing and flickering, noisy plumbing from other rooms, and best of all a no-turn mattress that had been turned so we were sleeping on the unpadded bottom). They were lovely about it and did more than we'd expected with the refund.

I won't leave a review at all - it would be harsh to leave a bad one as they can correct some of the problems, but I can't leave a good one. I suspect this is why grotty places end up with overall good reviews though.

TatianaBis · 28/08/2020 08:45

You paid for a sea view and didn’t get one, they have to move you to. If they have no rooms available they need to let you go. You paid a premium for something that is not as described. It’s not acceptable.

Elmo230885 · 28/08/2020 08:49

£350 for 4 nights over the August Bank holiday weekend sounds very reasonable.

Did you pay extra for a sea view or was it just mentioned as "some rooms have a sea view"?

How much time do you plan to spend in the place itself?

If the room is clean (ignoring the tattiness) I don't rate your chances of getting your money back.

TatianaBis · 28/08/2020 08:51

I rent out holiday properties in the U.K. and abroad btw.

If something is significantly not as described you should ask for a refund.

I’d never have photos that don’t reflect the property exactly as it is. And if there were noise I would have to prewarn clients in the description.

Poor reviews cost a business so it’s not worth risking a bad review.

TatianaBis · 28/08/2020 08:51

cost business not cost a business ^^

cansu · 28/08/2020 08:54

Take the picture from the website and details of your room with a seaview and ask them to provide what you have booked.

KaleWhale · 28/08/2020 08:55

Ask for a refund.
Contact booking.com.

Hard times and that does not equate to being allowed to overcharge for ill-advertised products.

thedancingbear · 28/08/2020 08:55

Go and enjoy your holiday, OP, instead of pissing and moaning about clanging pipes on Mumsnet.

£90 a night is pretty cheap for a seaside hotel on bank holiday weekend. You get what you pay for.

TheRealHousewife · 28/08/2020 08:58

Years ago I arranged a trip away with my parents and adult siblings. Parents choice where we went, think northern seaside town. Online looked great. Reality was totally different. Fleas in bedroom carpets, little scurrying insects on dining table, no door on one brothers bedroom door (yes really). We left immediately and as it was cash on arrival we didn’t pay. It was grim!!!

You have my sympathy @ulanbatorismynextstop! Negotiate with the manager. Room as described or reduction.

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 28/08/2020 09:06

That's a wholly different scenario to this one which is starting to sound a bit more like the OP has just changed her mind.

Clanging pipes in a £90 a night b&b at 8am when everyone is getting up? It's hardly something to demand a refund about.

Did you read the reviews OP??

Username6209 · 28/08/2020 09:13

You'd get your money back in a premier Inn if your sleep is disturbed

bythehairsonmychinichinchin · 28/08/2020 09:15

As it’s clean the only thing you can really complain about is not having a sea view.

So, I’d check your booking confirmation and ask to change rooms if it confirms you paid for a sea view. If they can’t move you that’s then when you need to discuss a refund.

The cost is average for Blackpool northern seaside places.

MsJaneAusten · 28/08/2020 09:28

It totally depends on the hotel. I’ve booked longer trips and left early before. One place gave me the full lot back (even the night I stayed!) Just speak to the receptionist politely and see what they say.

lifesalongsong · 28/08/2020 09:36

Of course you can have a sensible discussion with the B & B about your dissatisfaction, it's no wonder customer service is largely poor in England. You've paid for something which isn't as described why would you not have a conversation about it?

Meekly putting it up with it and seething in private is silly, no one can tell you what their response will be but for sure nothing will happen is you only moan online about it

Independent B and B =\= premier inn
ChiefClerkDrumknott · 28/08/2020 09:43

@baubled I think I know the exact B&B you mean. My DP and I went there last year with my parents. They had a lovely refurbished room at the front with a modern kitchenette and great sea views. We had an awful, grotty room at the back that looked as the it had it been updated in 50 years. I had a bit of a tantrum Blush and ended up going to the Travelodge, which was really nice and had a sea view

romeolovedjulliet · 28/08/2020 09:49

we had something like this in ilfracombe, the bed was literally made of pallets, small pokey room, no tv and bathroom down the corridor. we booked through booking.com and there was a list of charges in the room with gems such as 'pillow - £10, kettle -£15' et al. when i queried this the crap manager said it was because people that stolen items and it anything was missing at the end of a stay it would be debited from my debit card wtf ?? as it was a booking.com they had to take the debit card details for this purpose aparrently. needless to say i phoned the bank once i left the office and cancelled the card saying it was compromised.
should have said the room was £35 a night for 4 nights but we only used it as a base to sleep. many reviews were bad though, mould in the rooms and someone had a broken window, and how crap the staff were for customer relations.
fun times for all Smile

Aridane · 28/08/2020 09:51

Speak with the hotel & good luck.

I had something sort of similar - ie bloody Wi-fi wasn’t working (essential as was working via laptop ), and they agreed to refund if they couldn’t sort The Wi-fi . (they ,anaged to sort)

I hope you salvage something nice time away

lifestooshort123 · 28/08/2020 09:51

We've just returned a night early from a B&B on the Dorset coast - £520 for 4 nights through Booking.Com. Nothing wrong with it except the guaranteed parking was a 15min walk away and involved the owner coming with me to get/return the car each time. The weather forecast was poor so we cut our losses and left after 3 nights. If we'd been promised something that we hadn't received then we'd have asked for a partial refund. It sounds as though you're having a bit of a rubbish time so speak to them about sea-view but the rest is just the joys of a random B&B and I wouldn't ask for/expect to get a refund for any other reason.

CottonEyeJo · 28/08/2020 09:54

£360 for 4 nights this is cheap for an August Bank Holiday weekend Confused
Try and cancel, but you'll struggle to find an alternative I think.

NoSleepInTheHeat · 28/08/2020 09:55

Pipes clanging in the morning when everyone showers is pretty standard I would disagree! I guess it depends where you are staying but this wouldn't be acceptable IMO.

Hard times also do not equate to being allowed to change your mind about a holiday and try and make up things to get out of paying.
