I stayed in a uk B&B last night which I booked for 4 nights. Can I leave after one night and get my money back?

Just that really, the hotel is noisy and a bit tatty, but not cheap. It looked much nicer on photos and booking said we had a sea view but we're looking at the back of other properties and bins. I've paid £360 for 4 nights but just want to leave and find somewhere else. Is it ok to ask for my money back and what are the chances they'll give it?

Do you have a view of the sea? If it's not as described then you may have a chance?

BlueCowWonders · 28/08/2020 07:55

You would first have to talk to the B&B about putting things right - ie moving rooms

toomanyspiderplants · 28/08/2020 07:57

How did you pay? would you consider moving rooms if they offered?

WitsEnding · 28/08/2020 07:57

I wouldn’t rate your chances of finding somewhere else on Bank Holiday weekend - £360 for 4 nights near the sea is a bargain if there’s two of you and not easy to find for a single person.

I’d ask for a reduction or free breakfast if you booked a sea view and don’t have one.

ulanbatorismynextstop · 28/08/2020 07:57

No view of the sea, we're at the back of the property, not the front which has sea views.

Not even a glimmer of sea.

Why did you not complain immediately about not having a sea view?? That's what you paid for.
If it had been me, the moment I realised there was no sea view I would have immediately gone back to manager and demanded a new room.

MrsPworkingmummy · 28/08/2020 07:59

I think it's unlikely you'll get your money back to be honest. Did the B&B state in its small print that only some rooms have sea view? E. G. The deluxe rooms for example. Speak to the manager and see what they can do.

ulanbatorismynextstop · 28/08/2020 08:03

It was dark when we got here last night so I couldn't see if there was a sea view. I'll ask to move rooms but the hotel seems much rattier one the flesh and I'd rather cut and run.

I paid a deposit through booking.com then full price by credit card on arrival last night.

Four nights is a long time in a b&b. Did you look at the reviews beforehand? Is the room itself comfortable even if you don't have the view? I think you'd be well within your rights to ask for a partial refund if you've booked a sea view and not got it but I can't see they will allow you to cancel three nights are refund you that.

You will know that hotels have been shut for the best part of 6 months and a lot are struggling financially. I think it unlikely that they will just agree to your checking out today in the hope that they'll suddenly get another booking to recover their costs.

If you left where would you go as an alternative?

Apart from the lack of a sea view what else is wrong with it?

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 28/08/2020 08:06

Booking.com are great but there's often small print which you need to check.

CodenameVillanelle · 28/08/2020 08:07

You aren't likely to get a refund! Sorry. Ask for some freebies based on the lack of sea view and try to enjoy it.

ulanbatorismynextstop · 28/08/2020 08:08

I appreciate the Covid issue and lack of business. The b&b is really noisy, when people shower or use the toilet, the pipes around our room. Made loud wailing noises. We struggled to sleep last night because of it. And it's pretty tatty. Nothing like the photos. We've clearly got a room they left off the pictures.

Frazzled2207 · 28/08/2020 08:11

I doubt you’ll get your money back but you could bring it up with the management about how what you have is nothing like what was advertised, they might offer some kind of sweetener.
As a small business what they really won’t want is a negative review. Which begs the question did you read the reviews?

shesaidshesleavingonasunday · 28/08/2020 08:12

Didn't you check the reviews?

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 28/08/2020 08:13

Pipes clanging in the morning when everyone showers is pretty standard. I know you're saying it's not cheap but four nights for what I am assuming is for at least 2 people over August bank holiday weekend for £360 isn't that expensive. How many stars is the place?

If it is genuinely different to the photos and isn't clear - especially given there should be enhanced cleaning measures in place - then go and speak to the manager.

Tolleshunt · 28/08/2020 08:14

You need to speak to the owner and state how what you have doesn’t match with what was booked. Also complain about the noisy plumbing, and how it’s disturbing you etc. It would probably make more financial sense for them to refund you the remaining nights than risk a bad review.

ulanbatorismynextstop · 28/08/2020 08:14

Yes I checked the review, not all of them but the last 20 or so, they're accurate as in clean and central, staff working hard etc. But the noise and tattiness isn't mentioned.

Is it in Scarborough 🤦🏻‍♀️ I found similar last week- didn't look much like the pictures and the pictures I could see with the sea in them were definitely not taken from the hotel!

FelicityPike · 28/08/2020 08:16

If you booked through booking.com then your complaint/refund is with them.
If you booked with the b&b direct (phone or their own website) then speak to them.
I would speak to the owners anyway though.

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 28/08/2020 08:18

The OP paid the owner direct. The complaint is with the hotel.

Where in the UK is it? That will give more of an idea of whether £90 a night for a double room is budget or higher end.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 28/08/2020 08:18

I doubt you will get a refund, it depends on the terms you booked under. Definitely speak to them about the lack of seaview.

I'm surprised at some of the comments, I think £350 is a lot for 4 nights, it must depend where you are in the country. I'm currently posting from a beautiful holiday cottage by the sea, staying for 4 nights over BH weekend and paid £250 for 4 of us.

RoseMartha · 28/08/2020 08:19

Perhaps a chat with the proprietor first and say you are not happy and why. They might be able to move you to another room.

lyralalala · 28/08/2020 08:26

Speak to them today and see what they say.

They might be able to move you to another room. If you booked a sea view room you should have a sea view so that's an angle to come from.

Also point out that the photos on booking.com are not representative of the room you've been given

ulanbatorismynextstop · 28/08/2020 08:32

It's not Scarborough but similar, northern, seaside type resort. I'll speak with the hotel, I'm conscious it's a difficult time for them but this is pretty grim.

£62.50 per night for 4 people is extremely cheap even without it being bank holiday weekend
