Liverpool city break ideas

I'm off to Liverpool soon for the first time in many years and would love to know your must-sees, must-dos etc. (Yes I can and will do my own research, but I value independent advice.)

I'll be blissfully alone so don't need to do anything that will keep the kids entertained. Haven't booked a hotel yet but I assume I'll be staying in the city centre. Staying for 3 to 5 days or so.

I'm interested in all sorts of things; not particularly sporty but just about everything can hold my interest for an afternoon. History, buildings, architecture: all great. But I'm sure there are lots of things I might not have thought of.

And I'll reserve a day for shopping as I don't get to the UK much. But I'd love to hear about anything else you like too: your fave park, good people-watching cafe, anything!

You could spend an afternoon at the Albert Dock. There’s some nice restaurants and coffee shops there plus gift shops and old fashioned sweet shops etc. The Liverpool Museum on the docks is good too.

There’s the museum and Tate gallery by St. George’s Hall too (just opposite lime st station).

It’s a bit out of the way but Sefton Park is nice and peaceful if you just wanted to people watch and have some quiet; it’s close to Lark Lane too which is good for coffee shops, cafes and restaurants. Hope you get some nice weather. X

Look for the St that apparently is famous for time travel!!

Check if there are any tickets available for the Terracotta Warriors which are on display at the World Museum. The Walker Art Gallery and Tate Liverpool are excellent. There are some good plays on at the moment at the Everyman/Playhouse but also check out the Unity Theatre, which is a great little place. There a hop on hop off bus which is good fun. The Cathedrals are both worth a visit. If it's on at the moment check out booking a Shiverpool tour. I'll try to think of some other things.

Shiverpool!! It’s hilarious and very educational. You’ll see loads of the city, and the guides are extremely knowledgeable about local history. If you like the whole spooky, ghost thing this is better than any ghost walk I’ve been on. Very theatrical 😆

Do the bus tour! It’s a hop on/off thing and each place it stops is fascinating! The guides are really funny and give you great insider tips. Go to the planetarium in the World Museum!

Calderstones park or Sefton Park if the weather's nice.
Anglican Cathedral with the sunken cemetery is very interesting.
Natural History Museum.
Albert Dock has some museums.
Liverpool 1 for shopping.

Oh how I'd love a few days by myself in Liverpool. Such a fabulous city, brimming with heritage.

Food wise head for Bold Street. I like the Kasbah and Mowgli.

Viva Brazil- it a Brazilian restaurant specialising in bbq (assume you’re not veggie op). Try the 14 meat taster menu 🤤

Off to Liverpool too x x wanting to know if there are shops outside city centre which are independant , boutique clothes homewares, cafes...

I went to Liverpool for the first time this Easter - lovely City. We stayed at the Liner Hotel.

We did many of the Museums including the World Museum and Terracotta Warriors. The Maritime Museum has lots to see including an interesting exhibition on the Titanic. Much more Liverpool involvement than I ever realised. The Seized Museum in the basement was brilliant. We went to Lady lever gallery and Port Sunlight - just got the Metro - really easy.

Yes Luna. Try Bold Street to begin with.

Bold Street lovely for food, there is a fab veggie wholefood supermarket and cafe, the Kasbah delicious chicken tagine and traditional starters and breads, and you get to wear a fez....doesn't get much better than that :) Stay in the Shankly, great multi rooms, fab furnishings or any Signature living hotel/apartment, the Heywood House is also very good, rooms reasonable but no restaurant.Loads of freebie places to explore, including the World museum and all of the Albert dock, compact city to get around , love it!

For food try the Baltic market. Lots of different independent food places so loads of choice in one place.

There’s plenty of museums, you could even do a ferry across the Mersey.

The city centre buildings are beautiful, you’ve got the town hall and all the little side streets plus the Albert Dock.

The Central Library was a great stop on our tour... really interesting building and it has a balcony with views across the city. Free and interesting.

Then (if one is on) a guided tour of St George's Hall.

If you are with little ones then there is a really interesting place for them... something street I can't remember the name exactly.

Go to Port Sunlight and the Lady Lever gallery. Fantastic collection.

The two cathedrals are at either end of Hope Street and there is a fantastic cafe called The Quarter in the middle. The cathedrals (particularly the Anglican) are lovely to walk around as they are so different and you can stop for a cake in between!

I agree that The Quarter is very good. I like Host too which is right next door.
