Arnside, Lancashire.
I already love living in East Lancashire, moved here to be with DH, but adore Arnside.

unclebumpkin · 08/01/2015 19:29

@CaptainAnkles

  • Cornwall or Pembrokeshire

Hmmm... second person to suggest Pembrokeshire... I don't think I know much about that area...

Would live in Cornwall, where my ancestors come from. Quiet life, great views and mild climate.

stargirl1701 · 08/01/2015 19:34

Perthshire. I love it here. Hope to never leave.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 08/01/2015 19:35

Oh Arnside is very lovely. Really stunning coastal views and amazing tidal range.

Most of us are limited to where we can live by work, family or money. If money, work and my children weren't an issue I really would move to the Lakes.

As it is I consider myself very lucky to live close to the sea and the South Downs.

MrsWembley · 08/01/2015 19:42

Devon.

South Devon.

The bit between Start Point and
Brixham.

But that's my bit. No-one else's. Ok?

museumum · 08/01/2015 19:45

Right here. Edinburgh. The best bits of being in a city with non of the bad bits. Can walk everywhere, village feel, great food, pubs, theatre museums. Lovely housing. Easy access to the countryside (hills) and beach.

HeyheyheyGoodbye · 08/01/2015 19:46

On top of a hill in a village by the sea Cornwall?

ChristmasEveSteve · 08/01/2015 19:46

Lyme Regis or thereabouts.

Riri85 · 08/01/2015 19:46

Brighton! By the sea-a mixed bag of people loads of shopping and bars and restaurants! Just waiting to win the lottery!??

Loveleopardprint · 08/01/2015 19:51

All those wanting to move to Devon. It is very wet here. Rains all the time. It is good being near countryside and the coast though.

unclebumpkin · 08/01/2015 19:53

i guess there must be retirees who've decided to move somewhere afresh and done the sticking of pins in maps - who may be able to advise the best way of whittling your options down...

We used to live near Brighton it was good, but just so Brighton, got bored with it in the end.. ,

We now love living on the Isle of Wight.. (its like Dorset but cheaper)

However it is expensive to get here and back and jobs are few and far between (luckily I do have one here ) .. But for the future if we could afford it (would need to win the lottery! ) I might consider a move to the New Forest .. Lymington is lovely ..

CMP69 · 08/01/2015 19:58

Right where I am Grin . Newcastle upon Tyne. Great city to party in when you're young (it's not all Geordie Shore, but can be if that floats your boat). Fabulous restaurants, theatres and other nightlife for the oldies (me). Northumberland and a beautiful blue flag coastline 10 minutes away. Not born and bred but I'll never leave given the choiceGrin

unclebumpkin · 08/01/2015 19:58

  • We used to live near Brighton it was good, but just so Brighton

I figure anywhere close to London, you'd have to pay over the odds...

UncleBumpkin -so its not just me that feels like that then Grin..is good to go back sometimes and see people though.. but it is so terribly Brighton!

yeah i'm not sure how much the ferry costs, but i think places off the mainland are a bit off-putting for this reason...

If you can live anywhere in the UK, then you can quickly narrow things down by cost, and transport links. Will you want to travel much or will you need to access any particular place regularly? Many places are gorgeous but not massively well served by transport, Cornwall for example. Rents will be influenced by transport links and by availability of work locally. If one or both of those don't matter, you probably don't want to pay for it. If two places are the same rent, obviously the one close to work/transport will not be as nice as property as the one lacking those.

Also, what kind of property do you want? If you want the property (excluding location) to be as nice as you can possibly get for your money, you need to go for an area with cheaper rents, but not so cheap that it reflects an area where the type of property you want won't exist because no-one can afford it. Also, think about the type of community (if any) you want to be part of - you might be able to live remotely, but being nearer centres of employment might increase the amount of other people around.

Given all that, I'd ask - do you want to be in a town/small town/village/totally rural? Do you have any preference for the local countryside, eg. wild looking moors or Cotswold villages...coastal or not?
Do you have any big interests or hobbies that might play in?

This is fun! I wish I could choose anywhere.

Laska42 · 08/01/2015 20:32

Yep , but its fine if you live, work and have/or kids at school here.. Also car ferry can be expensive in summer but ok if you buy books of tickets at island rates like we do which can be use al year , foot ferry not so much.

Southampton and Portsmouth easily accessable , London 2hrs from home via southampton .. We are only 5 miles (furthest point ) out!

House prices v cheap vs rest of south ..

Come and look!

unclebumpkin · 08/01/2015 20:35

@temporarusername

Probably occasionally it'd be nice to be able to a big town (every week or fortnight). No need to access a place regularly though, it'd be just nice. I think it'd be nice to near some nice chunk of countryside to go strolling of into I think.
