Weegiemum I'm in Glasgow and I'm not sure we'd ever move from where we are (SS) never mind out of Scotland.

and definitely not back to Belfast which I love equally but our life is now here

@mothermirth
Besides nice countryside, what other criteria do you have?

  • probably not London, actually most likely don't want to live in a big city (though not sure)...

am at early thinking stages - but want to try to cut things down a bit

guess i don't want a tourist info brochure of every town in britain

and "mull" - i'm sure is nice, but i'm not sure i'd want to be so far out on the fringes...

We used to live in the Cotswolds and I loved it there. Gorgeous countryside, lovely little market towns and just as lovely bigger towns like Cheltenham on your doorstep. It is perfect for those who like to lead an outdoorsy lifestyle but still like to dress up and go out for a nice meal.

And some great schools too, if you have kids!

unclebumpkin · 08/01/2015 16:50

will probably have to make some somewhat instinctive choices based on travel books, i guess...

Yorkshire Dales, without a doubt. Probably in Skipton, it's a lovely little place. Right on the edge of the most amazing countryside and yet cities like Leeds are still readily accessible.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 08/01/2015 16:54

I enjoy living in London but it's too expensive so if I won the lottery I'd get myself a nice big house somewhere lavish. Otherwise I'd relocate to the north east. I love Newcastle!

  • sounds nice. a lot of people suggest the south west as well and i like it down there. other thoughts that have occurred are somewhere near the peak or lake districts. but am very open minded at the moment...

not planning to decide this evening - but it'd be nice to do so in the next couple of weeks...

The only way to find out whether you really like a place is to go and check it out and – ideally – stay there in the depths of winter Smile

youllshootyoureyeout · 08/01/2015 17:12

Somewhere near York, I just love it up there.

youllshootyoureyeout · 08/01/2015 17:13

I love the South West but detest the M5, I find driving up North less stressful.

FriedFishAndBread · 08/01/2015 17:16

Cornwall

CateBlanket · 08/01/2015 17:19

Lake District. With a private plane for visiting cities home and abroad.

Are you a person affected by weather? The north west of England is rather damp and grey, might be off putting for some. How much money do you have to buy? Do you value road links/Trains/access to airports/seaside vs country/city vs village? Would you rather live somewhere there is a more transient community - where your newness won't fit in - or a more established 'if you've not been here 20 years you're not local'?

I live in Hampshire, grew up - mostly - in Lancashire. I love Hampshire but miss the moors.

hmm... some of these things would be difficult to measure... just looking to make a shortlist for myself of nice-ish places - maybe i need to get bill bryson...

Northern lakes
Yorkshire Dales
Peak District
Posher bit of where I live (South Downs)

The problem with the first 3 is the inclement winter weather and cost of property and need for 2 cars. The problems with the last are the same except for better winter weather.

unclebumpkin · 08/01/2015 19:09

there's some nice ideas - maybe i'll go to the library tomorrow and spread some maps out and that'll help perhaps...
