What kind of person am I?

I've always considered myself to be fairly liberal, accepting and kind.
I don't know if it's my reaching almost mid 50's, menopause, a huge shift in the way the world is now or what but my mindset has definitely changed. To be clear, here's what I have a problem with:

  1. Donald Trump, Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson, Elon Musk, Andrew Tate and their ilk.
  2. Everyone and their uncle having a diagnosis of autism/Asperger's/ADHD .. Where did these come from and what happened to all the naughty kids?
  3. Trans-rights overtaking human rights or more specifically the rights of women and LGBandQ people.
  4. Little scrotes in balaclavas riding escooters in heavy traffic like the dickheads they are
  5. Bigger scrotes in balaclavas driving vehicles the wrong way down a motorway.

I'm still kind, I'm still thoughtful but I'm also overwhelmed by how society has changed so much that it's unrecognisable.

AIBU to think that we are absolutely fucking doomed?

I feel the same apart from number 2, which I’d reframe as we’re living in a society that doesn’t allow people to thrive, that has forced a great number of people to seek diagnosis to explain why they can’t cope.
I also believe that in trying to be inclusive, within a system (mainly education) that simultaneously destroys them means that the “bad” behaviour is far more prevalent than it used to be, and it’s very difficult to deal with this effectively because, well, you can’t learn to manage the issues if you’re constantly in a state of fight or flight (or fawn or freeze). You need space and peace to do that, and have you seen the education system recently??

Edited to add: took the op on face value, hadn’t realised it was just another day of ND bashing.

Edited

You were right the first time. Not trying to bash anyone just explore the reasons why I feel the way I do.

Don't you understand that if my experience of something is then that's an honest reaction? It doesn't matter if the something is people with autism, black people, or people who wear glasses. 100% of my interactions with people who I know to have a diagnosis of autism has been overwhelmingly unpleasant.
There might be plenty of interactions I've had with people who are Nd and I don't know.
I'm referring to three members of my extended family who behave awfully on a regular basis and blame it on their diagnosis. I'm referring to people that I deal with in my professional life who have used their diagnosis as a reason to not stick to an agreement they've made/to lash out at me for asking them to behave reasonably/for treating their family members like trash in front of me.
This is my experience.
The post I made today is to highlight just how I've come to realise these things bother me and that my tolerance for such things has hugely reduced as I've got older and that I don't know if it's because I've got older or because the world has become more challenging.

The problem is that you're conflating their diagnosis with their personality.

I know a lot of autistic people. Some of them are dickheads, most of them aren't.

You're taking your experience with certain family members and coming to the conclusion that their autism makes them dickheads. I'm sure you know a fair few neuro typical arseholes too, but you're not claiming all neuro typical people are arseholes.

If you can't understand why you've really got people's back up with some of your posts, then I'd suggest you're a bit of an arsehole yourself.

Reassurancells · 26/08/2026 21:46

100% if my interactions with black people have been overwhelmingly unpleasant.

nobody can say I’m racist because that’s my actual experience with the three black people I know. They are unpleasant therefore all black people are unpleasant. And it’s nothing to do with me being unpleasant and nasty and racist it’s all on them.

@mnhq please can you do something about this sort of thread. It isn’t fair that hate against ND people is allowed like this. Please can you explain why it’s ok? Because I really really don’t understand and as an autistic person I often don’t I know but this isn’t ok. Surely?

100% agree. @MNHQwhy did it take you so long to delete an obviously horrifically ableist post? Is that sort of thing tolerated on here?

Thirteen hours all but 5 or 10 minutes it stood for. I’m honestly so angry and upset.

That is EXACTLY what you said. I’be just changed autism for black.

it should have been deleted long long ago.

its not ok to say things like that about people like me.

one might even say it was overwhelming unpleasant.

Jaimelefromage · 26/08/2026 21:53

One thing is for sure OP, 100% of my interactions with you have been unpleasant. And therefore we can deduce that you are unpleasant.

Reassurancells · 26/08/2026 22:00

I encounter people who use their colour as an excuse for bad behaviour daily.

My RL experience of black people is overwhelmingly negative. (That post is still standing ffs)

I'm referring to three members of my extended family who behave awfully on a regular basis and blame it on their colour. I'm referring to people that I deal with in my professional life who have used their colour as a reason to not stick to an agreement they've made/to lash out at me for asking them to behave reasonably/for treating their family members like trash in front of me.
This is my experience.

(also still standing)

lifeinthemidlands · 26/08/2026 22:04

Also what do you mean by unpleasant? Is it that it makes your job more difficult and you can't be bothered? I also work in a job where a significant number of my students (and colleagues) are ND - yes supporting them can be challenging, but it's my job to get it right and generally they are appreciative and doing their best. Of course, a proportion of ND people can be unpleasant to work with - same as NT - but generally in my experience, they are trying desperately to fit in and live in a world that doesn't meet their needs, and any efforts to make their life easier are met with appreciation.

Mostly aggressive. Avoiding rules/laws or just behaving unreasonably with no thought of how it's received. Attitude of: the world owes me a favour. Immediately using diagnosis as explanation for this attitude or behaviour.

Some of the responses I've had this evening have reinforced this. Instead of actually reading my responses, have advised me of bigotry, ableism etc when I've tried to explain my experience and have questioned why I feel this way. I've said repeatedly that I want to understand. I've appreciated responses that have been calm and reasoned. I've taken advice from these people and ordered reading material etc.
I understand it's an emotive subject. But the pile on is pure reinforcement honestly.

I have autism and adhd. I was diagnosed in my forties.

of my three children, two are also diagnosed with ASD and ADHD.

I have never in my life used an ASD as an excuse.

I also haven’t used the word neurospicy.

people are arseholes. Some people with ASD are arseholes and so are some NT people.

lifeinthemidlands · 26/08/2026 22:24

Your experience is so far from mine I find it hard to understand’ unless you’re working in some fairly niche mental health role. I’ve certainly found ND people (including my DDs) frustrating and challenging and certainly haven’t always dealt with it well. But I have never found anyone aggressive - direct, yes, unintentionally rude, yes. Not aggressive or excessively demanding.

Dymaxion · 26/08/2026 22:34

I strongly suspect that if every woman aged 40-60 rang in sick tomorrow and took to their bed for the day, and I mean properly took to their bed and didn't answer any questions, didn't drag themselves around the house sorting anything out for anyone else in the house, simply shut their eyes and breathed type thing, the world as we know it would implode by about 9.30am.

PashedPished · 26/08/2026 23:02

Agreed. The world has gone sideways.

You are spot on except for number 2. The naughty kids were misunderstood ND kids in a lot of cases, they were left to flounder because they just didn’t have the understanding we can offer now. I know from experience as my own ND kid went from failing and causing havoc to excelling beyond their peers with a diagnosis and a different approach. That approach would never have been possible 30 years ago - even 10 years ago tbh.

I’m not ND either, and feel the same way about the OP as you do. Why do you think we find your attitude towards disabled people so disgusting OP?

You have not been open to discussion, you have used your little anecdotes with your small sample size and repeated them as if they are proof that ND people are unpleasant.

I hope you’ve learned a lot about yourself from this thread, but I doubt that was actually the point of it.

If 100% of your interactions with autistic people have been unpleasant then perhaps you are the problem, given that this isn’t other people’s experience and you are the common denominator in each of those interactions.

Autistic people are as different from each other as neurotypical people are, obviously, because being autistic doesn’t determine their personality, interests, friendliness etc. For 100% of your interactions with autistic people to have been negative is quite a significant statistical anomaly for which there is only one obvious explanation, given your extremely hostile and prejudiced comments about autistic people on this thread.

Welcome to your age. But you could of course be a republican in which case you may like Donald Trump, mid-50s or not. You haven't mentioned AI girlfriends and boyfriends but I'm coming around to that idea. If it upsets you, just remember a lot of crap that came out the 1970s. Today = environmentally shite, but enlightenment-wise = pretty good.
