Apparently they don’t intercept in the water due to risk if loss of life (most migrants can’t swim and the life jackets aren’t enough to save them) and they don’t intervene on the beaches if they anticipate a violent response. I presume that at least some of the people organising the boats carry knives or guns.

They don't intervene on beaches as a matter of policy.

Philp , shadow Home Secretary was filmed on a beach last week asking why they don't stop a boat being boarded and the Police man replied "we have been told not to". No guns or knives in sight. One knife through the boat and it would have deflated in shallow water. They have been told not to do that too. They did it once a year or so back.

The job of the police is to get into danger to save lives.

I judge people by their actions not their words. Our government could stop this today if they wanted to. They clearly don’t want to.

How?

And that babys mother too! There is no way the 'fleeing' FRANCE is worth the risk to that tiny babies life.

Agree...

I also thought France was what's termed
a safe country, so why would any decent parent put their child's life in danger once they'd made it to there.

It's the height of greed, opportunism, selfishness and utter stupidity to put your small children through that trauma and that level of risk just to try to reach the UK when you've already passed through several safe countries and been in France for weeks or months. Being desperate to leave wherever you came from is one thing, but this sort of thing makes you look less like a genuine refugee and more like someone with their eye on the main chance.

angstridden2 · 10/08/2026 17:18

An earlier poster said the authorities could stop this if they wanted to, but obviously don’t. If the French can’t/wont stop the boats loading and setting off, I understand the law of the sea is that people must be rescued if in peril. What should we do then? (Honest enquiry…)

Let v the French rescue them -or not
British boats and theRNLI should not be everything French waters to pick them up!
Of they do enter Britain waters they should be towed back over to French waters.

MagicThanks · 10/08/2026 17:23

I don’t understand - illegal immigrants aren’t entitled to anything at all in the UK. No benefits, housing, anything. I just looked it up to check I’m correct and I am. Why are people saying we are the gold standard for immigrants? Want to understand the argument.

So the people you choose to criticise are the French police? Not the baby’s family? Or the other people on the boat? Interesting, and not surprising. I know who I blame for putting that baby in such danger and it’s not the French police.

Couldn’t have put it better myself. Any parent who would risk their child’s life in this way, does not deserve to be a parent. There is no war in France, so what’s their excuse for putting their child in harms way to reach the UK.

HostaCentral · 10/08/2026 16:39

Most of these people have been in Europe for some considerable time, months and years. They have had their applications turned down, often by multiple countries. That baby was undoubtebly born somewhere in Europe. The UK is the last place they can try, as it is the furthest West. We are too disorganised and too soft to say "no" and return. Its a shame we no longer seem to share data on the immigration status of these people. I would love a system whereby if they are denied asylum in one European country, they are denied asylum full stop. We all abide by the same convention after all.

There are 44 countries in Europe. I doubt they've tried them all.

chirrupybird · 10/08/2026 17:26

Often these people speak English not French and may have family in the UK. I agree they should stay in France and it's pretty insane to take small children in the boats but I guess the risks are not told to them, just this is the way to get there and it will be fine, just give us the money.

Surely it's not illegal to arrive in the UK and claim asylum? That doesn't make you an illegal immigrant.

StarbabyShine · 10/08/2026 17:02

What would be the benefit of faking this photo?

Is it supposed to garner sympathy? Challenge the 'no kids on the boats' thing?

All it's done is make me incredibly angry, if so, mission failed.

Well, if the mission was to make you angry, mission achieved. Given that the entire social media economy is based on making people angry, it’s a possibility that this is faked.

Asylum claimants get housing and food and a small allowance and hit paydirt if their asylum claim is agreed as most are.

The number of women and children have been rising this year. There is a suggestion that there are more genuine asylum seekers than there were, but that still raises the question why they aren't claiming in France.

You would need to be armed and have cover to deflate that boat. The passengers won’t look idly on.

Pearlstillsinging · 10/08/2026 17:57

Presumably it is not illegal on the French coast to board a boat with members of your family.

BadBadCat · 10/08/2026 17:58

The parents of this child should hang their head in shame! Why should the police or anyone else risk their own lives to save these idiotic people.

The whole thing is a massive scam- I have no empathy for any of them any more as the whole thing is a complete scam with criminals being allowed to profit from it.

French police are routinely armed.

They deflated one about a year ago and they were told not to do it again. The key is to do it before it's been loaded with people.

Am not sure why but I do wonder if the photo is actually real. It is these days a question we have to ask.
I hope not.

I wonder if it’s real - enlarge the photo and look at the bottle of milk. It seems to be unattached to anything.

They should all be sent straight back, except children who didn't choose to enter illegally.

And have who exactly look after the children?

Better for whom, though? I mean, either every life on that boat is equally valuable, or none, surely. And yes, the adults chose this, and chose it for children too young to get a say, but what do we do with that — just kidnap anyone embarking on a boat who isn’t an adult, and do what with them? Say a French border cop took that baby. There’s then an unidentified, unspeaking baby alone in the care system in France. Or are you suggesting a gendarme dangles the baby as bait to get its parents to disembark as well?

What would happen in the UK if I was putting my child in a life threatening situation in full view of the public? I’d expect some authority to intervene and potentially take my albeit identified but unspeaking baby off me, so why does this baby deserve less?

Yes everyone’s life is equally valuable, but you’re allowed to risk your own life - no one arrests you for staying in an abusive relationship. Risking a child’s is a whole different ballgame - they may take your child into protective care if you won’t leave an abusive relationship.

Erm parents?? They made the decision to put that poor baby on the boat. Please tell me what conflict is in France that would necessitate risking a child’s life.
