I left the company after 1 year (6 months in 1 team, then 6 months on promotion in the second team')
It's really shown me how the office environment can make or break a role. Team 1 was absolutely fine, I had a couple of friends, manager was great, job was fine, I just applied for promotion to team 2 as it was a 5k payrise.

Should say on team 1 I joined with 5 others and that really helped bonding and settling in. Team 2..put in alone with people who'd all been there years and all very extroverted/loved banter. Nobody was nasty but I very quickly got the frequent 'quiet' comments and label. I did make conversation and try, went to the team lunches twice but just always felt on the outside. No friends on that team, nobody to talk to.

Gave my notice in 1 month ago as I got onto a course in an area I'm trying to progress into. Manager announced to the team of 12 in an online meeting I was leaving. One woman (the only genuine one) said 'have you got a new job?) I was told I could wfh for the rest of my notice except for once a week. Nobody asked me what job I was going onto. They knew when my last day was. Nobody said a word to me.

Did handover with manager, gave them my laptop etc. He said good luck and all the best. The woman in my team didn't even look up from her laptop. I just walked out and quit the group whatsapp.

Nobody's said good luck. Not a word. I'm not expecting a red carpet, 6 months is only short but it's basic human decency.

I left a job after 6 months 2 years ago (it was a fixed term role) and I got a card, collection and leaving drinks. It just depends on the culture, I've just never known anything like this. Have I expected too much?

That is horrible, to not even acknowledge you leaving and wish you well. I'm also a quiet person and a lot of people seem sort of offended by it.

At my old job there could be a lot of fuss made of people leaving, maternity leaves, big birthdays but this didn't really happen for me (or other quiet people). I organised my own leaving lunch/drinks. I did get a gift, which was earrings. I don't have pierced ears but no one had noticed that after 7 years! I did have one good friend there who left before me and when I had a moan to her she said some of the others thought I was "stuck up and miserable" even though she tried to convince them otherwise. So that gave me some insight into how some colleagues see me though I think I'd rather not have known.

I honestly do make an effort to be pleasant and friendly but being quieter than average, especially once no longer very young, just seems to get people's backs up.

No, Civil Service, I was a on a permanent contract. I never did anything to them. I worked my notice and did my work, i didn't leave them in the lurch. I understand I was quiet but not even a 'good luck' just nothing! I wasn't mean or rude.

It's probably nothing personal. I work in CS and honestly I can't keep up with the amount of people who come and go! We don't even bother with cards or collections anymore because we'd be doing one every week!

Iamsohungryy · 29/07/2026 15:45

Everyone there has been there at least 3 years AFAIK. They have had 1 or 2 people start and leave in that time, and have had plenty to say about them. (Labelled them as skivers, workshy etc) makes me wonder if these people also didn't find themselves fitting in. I'll probably be the next person they gossip about.

I left a job of 2 years to go on maternity leave, no card, a couple of “good lucks” muttered as I finished. Even my boss didn’t acknowledge that it was my last day, suffice to say I didn’t go back!

it is hurtful, I don’t blame you for feeling sad.

If you were in the office with people for your last day, did you take biscuits in to say Goodbye?

They might just be busy and not released you were actually leaving at that moment in time.

Iamsohungryy · 29/07/2026 15:47

Because I didn't really connect with this team tbh I didn't feel comfortable sending out a 'it's been lovely to work with you all' message or taking in cakes, because to be honest it hasn't. I know maybe i brought that on myself, and to be clear I really wasn't expecting any sort of card or gift, I was just surprised not a single person said bye/good luck. That's basic manners.

Did anyone else leave in the time you were there? Did they get anything? Did you sign a card for anyone else?

I left a job after 5 years and from management they said it at a meeting, and got some treats for the canteen. That was it.

The job before that I was there longer and got a card, cake, flowers and hamper. Hamper was a whip around, I think.

Tbh after 6 months / 1 year, I wouldn't expect a lot. And a collection everytime someone leaves can be annoying so I didn't mind not getting anything from the team from the last as I also wasn't been asked to contribute to collections.

Chewbecca · 29/07/2026 15:48

It's simply because you were only in the team 6 months.

Did you arrange leaving drinks?

I bet everyone will say bye, good luck, keep in touch etc. as you leave today.

MyDarlingRose · 29/07/2026 15:48

You were only with the team 6 months… you’ll barely have made an impression tbh. Yes you’re expecting too much. You were a brief drive by.

Not on my team but someone on another team left and another person got married, they both got cakes, balloons, banners etc.
Agree I know 6 months is short but not even a goodbye or good luck feels wrong

Dancer48 · 29/07/2026 15:49

Just read your update...yes, I agree, really rude to not say goodbye/good luck.

I always leave a card and sweets for the canteen when leaving a job. Maybe not necessary but I like to

That's crappy, sorry.

I was medically retired from the police after almost 17 years in the job. I got absolutely nothing on my last day either. Made me feel like shit to be honest, but it is what it is. Very relieved to be out of there.

SuePerblybuilt · 29/07/2026 15:52

It’s not you, it’s them. Please don’t overthink; you are better off out of such a workplace.

Spanishinquisition · 29/07/2026 15:56

It's the way of the world today I'm afraid OP. People are rude. Basic manners seem to have disappeared.

You aren't asking for a fuss or a gift and you are absolutely right - it is downright rude not to acknowledge you. I mean, how much effort does it take to politely ask someone about their new job, say good luck? Even if you don't really care about the answer, you still ask about people because we are human and it's good to make others feel cared for .

Move on, there are still lots of lovely people around, although the numbers of rude people around seem to be increasing year on year (you only have to read comments on the boards on here to see that). I wish you luck in your course and hope you find yourself with a more pleasant bunch wherever you go next 😊

Friendlygingercat · 29/07/2026 15:57

Im sorry you are sad but it tells us something fundamental about the workplace. They are your colleagues, not your friends. They are there because they have to be
not because they want to.

In contract to OP I neither want nor need last minute gifts, cards and sentiments. Ive left a number of jobs over the years and usually either didn't go in or left early on my last day to avoid all the mawkish sentimentality. I don't' want that kind of personal involvement.

SecretSquid · 29/07/2026 15:58

JugBouquet · 29/07/2026 15:36

This is on you, OP. You’re throwing a retrospective strop on the assumption everyone read the fine print of a bulletin your manager sent around two days ago. If you wanted your departure acknowledged by a team you admit yourself you were a poor fit with, having handed in your notice after five months with them, you need to be the one who speaks up and says you’re leaving, thanks and bye, or whatever. You have no idea if they were aware you were going.

You're just extrapolating from what another pp said.
I don't think you even bothered to read the whole of the OP.
The OP says that there were 12 people on teams when the manager announced OP was leaving. Only one of them said anything. Anything at all.
When the manager said goodbye at the end of her shift, nobody bothered to say "Bye, OP ". I mean, I say that every time someone leaves every day, whether I like them or know them, because it's just polite, and it greases the social wheels. Makes life a little bit nicer for everyone.
OP it's not you it's them. And it seems like there's a fair few of them on this thread.

I don't think OP particularly wanted gifts, but maybe for people to just say goodbye good luck. As if she were actually there and not completely invisible.
She's just comparing that with what happened with a different team after a similar length of time.

SummerNocturnal · 29/07/2026 16:03

Ach, bunch of bastards. A nicely worded email or card doesn't cost much. Blimey, I've done that for trainees I only knew a term.
But - collections and group cards always require one proactive person - and I've been in the situation sadly where people don't always step up. For colleagues they've known years, not months.
So please try and not take it to heart. It reflects poorly on them. Do not take it personally. Do a Miley and go out and buy yourself a bunch of flowers.
Good luck OP!

Pointing out the obvious and putting another point of view across isn't rude, if you think that it, then you are part of the issue! Have we moved so far from adult conversation and understanding that disagreement is healthy and should be encouraged that when someone puts accross a view point you disagree with it is considered rude

The OP didn't like her colleagues, she says as much, she didn't take in any cakes/sweets to say bye to them, she has been there 6 months, 6 and 26 weeks - less with any annual leave - these aren't friends - they are colleagues.

Today was my last day and nobody said a word. The manager said to them all twice my last day was today so most of them would've known.

I worked in civil service for 35 years. When I retired on ill health grounds I didn’t get a single card, gift or acknowledgment from my team or manager. I had lots of friends in other departments and I had a retirement party with close colleagues with gifts and cards but was absolutely astounded I didn’t even get a team card!
