I left the company after 1 year (6 months in 1 team, then 6 months on promotion in the second team')
It's really shown me how the office environment can make or break a role. Team 1 was absolutely fine, I had a couple of friends, manager was great, job was fine, I just applied for promotion to team 2 as it was a 5k payrise.

Should say on team 1 I joined with 5 others and that really helped bonding and settling in. Team 2..put in alone with people who'd all been there years and all very extroverted/loved banter. Nobody was nasty but I very quickly got the frequent 'quiet' comments and label. I did make conversation and try, went to the team lunches twice but just always felt on the outside. No friends on that team, nobody to talk to.

Gave my notice in 1 month ago as I got onto a course in an area I'm trying to progress into. Manager announced to the team of 12 in an online meeting I was leaving. One woman (the only genuine one) said 'have you got a new job?) I was told I could wfh for the rest of my notice except for once a week. Nobody asked me what job I was going onto. They knew when my last day was. Nobody said a word to me.

Did handover with manager, gave them my laptop etc. He said good luck and all the best. The woman in my team didn't even look up from her laptop. I just walked out and quit the group whatsapp.

Nobody's said good luck. Not a word. I'm not expecting a red carpet, 6 months is only short but it's basic human decency.

I left a job after 6 months 2 years ago (it was a fixed term role) and I got a card, collection and leaving drinks. It just depends on the culture, I've just never known anything like this. Have I expected too much?

@Iamsohungryy tbf they sound like a bunch of cunts and you're better off moving on.

Fingers crossed your next role is with nicer people.

Why because someone who has worked there for 6 months, who they might not even know is leaving because they haven't read the bulletin!!

deletealt734 · 29/07/2026 15:18

@Imightbeinthewronghere 😅😅

Wow - so rude and unnecessary. You don't happen to work in the civil service perchance?

Whatwouldnanado · 29/07/2026 15:18

So add their unfriendliness to the reasons you are leaving! Take it as a lesson in how NOT to be a team member. Put it out of your head, keep in touch with friends from the other team. Onwards and upwards ! In my organisation there are cards and flowers whatever for anyone who leaves/moves to a different department. Lucky.

No, very similar, but not civil service.

I just can't get over someone expecting a song and dance over being there for 6 months when her colleages may not have even known she was leaving - she's expecting them to have read a memo

Springsummertime · 29/07/2026 15:23

You were only in that team 6 months and didn’t sound like you were a great fit! Sounds like maybe they just weren’t that affected by your departure! Move on!

mindutopia · 29/07/2026 15:23

I had to leave my job after 6 years because I have cancer and could not return to work. Did I get a gift or a card or any sort of acknowledgment in any way? No. It was literally like I died. I still have my company issued mobile and laptop as literally no one gave enough of a shit to tell me how to return them (I work remotely so not like there was somewhere I could just drop them off). They just locked me out of my email (before my last day) and I never heard from any of them again. 😂

Fuck sake what a bunch of arseholes you worked with

ThatMintMember · 29/07/2026 15:25

Pretty common i reckon. I left a nursery job after 3 years and got a card and whip around but only 3 people turned up for my leaving meal. Left a call centre job after 4 years (going on maternity actually), no one acknowledged it. Problem with that was I worked from home so think friendships aren't as good when that's the case.

I do also think though that as soon as you leave you aren't one of them anymore so they simply move on. Most people aren't interested in keeping in touch. It's sad but guess that's why work friends often aren't real friends.

Good luck in your new job! Hope you make some nice new work friendships!

Isthismykarma · 29/07/2026 15:27

That’s shit OP.

When I left my last job I barely lasted 6 months, I was crap at the job and had had my probation extended. It wasn’t what I thought it was going to be, and the managers were not happy at all with the candidate they’d ended up with.

They were lovely people though so..

They still wished me well and I got a card, a bunch of flowers and a bottle of Prosecco. I thanked them for the opportunity and expressed apologies that it didn’t work out.

You never know who you’re going to bump into again, so it’s good to leave someone on good terms!

I’m brilliant in my new role, brought lots of ideas to the team and have helped streamline processes. It’s a really good fit and I’ve added real value to the team and get brilliant performance reviews. I know for a fact if I put in my notice tomorrow I’d get the same reception you did, because my team are all aresholes!

TrishM80 · 29/07/2026 15:29

It's a bit shitty. Out of courtesy if there was someone on my team leaving, even if they were only there a short time and I didn't get to know them, I'd at least shake their hand/message them the best of luck, or even ask them if they wanted to do lunch on their last day.

Even if they were particularly obnoxious, which is rare, I'd still message them "best of luck in new role" out of courtesy!

LancashireButterPie · 29/07/2026 15:29

I knew someone who worked at the same (cancer) hospital for 26 years. She died suddenly 2 months after retiring and not one person sent flowers or went to her funeral. Just a few messages on Facebook.
We invest too much in work, we really are just numbers.

Merryoldgoat · 29/07/2026 15:32

This thread is bonkers.

OP isn’t needy or any of the other pejorative names being chucked about.

I cannot imagine someone leaving a job and not even being told goodbye. It’s rude, discourteous and unprofessional.

I had a short stint at a LA and hated it - fit was off but they were kid enough to give me a card, voucher and flowers which I didn’t expect and the bare minimum I’d give anyone leaving is a card.

It speaks to an unpleasant culture. I would not allow my team to behave like this to a leaver and I’d have had a small informal goodbye at the very least.

notacooldad · 29/07/2026 15:33

Me and my friend worked for the same service but different teams. I worked there for 36 years, she had worked for 34.
On my last day they took me out for a meal, the team had a collection and I got £240(13 people in team and 4 of them were new starts within the previous month and I hadn't done a shift with them) I got a big card with nice messages in.

My friend didnt even get a good luck on her way out. I was so disappointed for her but our team had a culture of looking out for each, we socialised together and genuinelyliked each other. Some of the ex team members showed up for my leaving meal. Her team was flippin' toxic ( There was a lot of crossover work so I knew the team and how they operated.

Stumblingalongthroughlife · 29/07/2026 15:35

Did you do anything though? When someone leaves the company I work for they send an email around to everyone they've worked with saying "as you know it's my last day today, it was lovely working with you all..". They might add in how to stay in contact, and if they're in the office they'll point out that they've brought in X treats for everyone.

Has there been a lot of people leaving recently? They might be a bit fed up that they've invested time in getting you onboard/training, only to have to do it all over again and likely cover workloads whilst they're waiting for a new person to start

JugBouquet · 29/07/2026 15:36

This is on you, OP. You’re throwing a retrospective strop on the assumption everyone read the fine print of a bulletin your manager sent around two days ago. If you wanted your departure acknowledged by a team you admit yourself you were a poor fit with, having handed in your notice after five months with them, you need to be the one who speaks up and says you’re leaving, thanks and bye, or whatever. You have no idea if they were aware you were going.

AbzMoz · 29/07/2026 15:38

I left a role after 2 years. I got some awkward add-me on LinkedIn from people I’d rather never interact with again, and a few WhatsApp’s off people being nosey/asking if there were vacancies in my new gig as they wanted to jump ship too.
I was also made redundant during covid after 16 years and got nada.

In a month or two you’ll be well into your course and they’ll be just a distant memory.

Minasama · 29/07/2026 15:39

Yanbu but I also think a lot of workplaces have become very transactional these days. These things used to be organised by younger female colleagues or the boss’s PA and because everyone is so busy and no one has an assistant any more they go by the wayside.

My experience EXACTLY!

I worked is a school for 6 years. Recently the Head announced I was taking ill health retirement, due to ongoing cancer treatment. Has anyone contacted me? Nope. Any leaving card? Hell no!

Fuck the lot or them!

That’s the way the cookie sometimes crumbles, OP.

SweetnsourNZ · 29/07/2026 15:40

Pinkocsb · 29/07/2026 15:06

I left my last job as an enabler after over seven years. The longest standing staff member. Totally ignored. No card or anything. Sucks really. Sorry you had the same experience

That is sad. Says more about them than you though.

BCBird · 29/07/2026 15:42

I worked somewhere for 27 years- overall boss did not acknowledge my service in the way I thought he would- disappointing

It feels a bit needy to me. You’ve been there 5 minutes. I wouldn’t give it a second thought.
