Do I just go home?

I've been on holiday for 2 days. I hate where I am (European city).

A lot of issues.
I can't find any good places to eat in a walkable distance.
My hotel is pretty grotty (not dirty, just old).
Hotel in a dodgy area and I don't feel safe going outside early morn or into the evening.
Weather is temperamental.
The city is grotty and definitely not one I like.

I've talked to holiday provider about at least moving hotels but they've refused. I've spoken to 2 different people.

Do I just give this up as a bad job, lose about £1500 and get a flight home? I can't afford another holiday anytime soon.

I'm not much of a crier but I cried tonight. I've travelled alone before so I'm usually a very confident traveller.

OP posts:

I would read the riot act to the holiday company saying you don't feel safe as a solo female traveller and threaten them with social media if they're not prepared to help you out.

A better hotel would at least make you feel safer.

Its not the holiday company's fault if op booked somewhere without researching it

God, I travel every month solo (usually Europe) and I've never paid £1500!!!
Bit lame.

You just fly in and out of Naples airport and that’s it, you can’t stay there. You fly in, and as soon as you can you leave in a registered pre ordered licensed car. The roads are horrendous, the gangs are worse, and really quite scary areas. Don’t stay in Naples. You can travel out to much nicer places.

Naples is amazing. Real, vibrant, pulses with excitement and passion. The food is brilliant
History is fascinating
definitely not for people who want to get in their sterile, pre-ordered car to avoid an actual experience

Another who instantly thought Paris. (Who else has gotten on the Metro at Monmatre and immediately wondered why people go on about the Moulin Rouge so much?! 🤣)

Wherever it is - surely you can get an uber to take you to a part of the city you want to see or to a station that’s not in a rough area and then get a train out of town?

Just seems like you’re giving up.

no!!! you will not "lose money to go home" the money is gone whether you go or stay.

I didn’t say she would !!! All I said was “ try and salvage some of your holiday”… no skin in the game whether she stays or goes home …

Thanks for the advice all. I won't be saying where I am so move on if that's all you can talk about. Thank you.

Nice (the attitude, not the place ).

Just get on a plane back, no big deal.

XelaM · Yesterday 22:23

So if you say you're in Paris or Madrid - do you think we will be able to identify you? 🤣

Sweetdreamsbeautifulnightmare · Yesterday 22:24

How can anyone advise if they don’t know where you are?!

AllaFieraDellEst · Yesterday 22:24

The problem you have OP: wherever you go, there you are....

TheYorkshirePudding · Yesterday 22:25

What a silly post. Say where you are and plenty of people will have been there and can help you. Do you say you have a pain on your body but won’t reveal where it is? Go home or stay but nobody can help you with the area unless we know where it is.

I'd spend tonight doing some serious research and approach tomorrow with a clear plan. You presumably chose this place because there were things you wanted to see, so make a plan to see them in a way that feels safe. Hop on hop off bus tours can be a good shout to see the nice bits conveniently. Research ahead good places to eat and get off the bus near to them, eating your main meal at lunch.
Then if you still feel the same, go home the next day, at least having seen the main sights.

The problem you have OP: wherever you go, there you are....

Yes! My point exactly.

But put much better.

MinimumRage · Yesterday 22:26

Is there really a European city with a station so terrifying one cannot approach it in the daytime??

If you really feel that way OP, then taxi to the airport and home is the best option for you.

DoloresDelEriba · Yesterday 22:29

Cross thread polination…

There we are then.

HungryHippu · Yesterday 22:31

Get a taxi to the station and get a train out of that city somewhere else and stay in a nice hotel.

Motuihe · Yesterday 22:18

Bus to Vesuvius or pop down to sorrento amalfi positano etc

Tricky if she's in Warsaw! 😉

Lobsterteapot · Yesterday 22:32

Well that’s 5 mins of my life I’ll never get back…

Arf! I've only been to Sheffield once in - er - around 1967. I'm sure it's a great holiday destination these days, though.

Unfortunately, the market closed because of a cockroach infestation, but I think the council opened it again today.

creamcheeseandlox · Yesterday 22:38

Loved Naples. One of the best city breaks I've been on.

Ohnobackagain · Yesterday 22:39

Uber to the station for your day trips @DoIgohome ? Or Bolt if not available …

Noshadelamp · Yesterday 22:40

This is what happened to me on Marseille! Really didn't realise how sketchy it was. Have travelled solo before but never felt as unsafe as I did in Marseille.
Op I feel for you. If you really don't feel safe then I would chalk it up to a bad experience and leave.

CaffeinatedMum · Yesterday 22:40

What a pointless thread if you won’t say where you are

Motuihe · Yesterday 22:42

Just research places near and make the most it will be over soon. Get some great photos wherever you are and just go with the flow.

dh280125 · Yesterday 22:42

DoIgohome · Yesterday 20:22

I did think about that but reluctant to pay out more to be honest.

Surely that will cost less than the £1500?

Is it Rome? Complete shithole. Hated it.

Imagine someone from Britain saying Rome is a shit hole. Bonkers.
