Do I just go home?

DoIgohome · Yesterday 20:18

I've been on holiday for 2 days. I hate where I am (European city).

A lot of issues.
I can't find any good places to eat in a walkable distance.
My hotel is pretty grotty (not dirty, just old).
Hotel in a dodgy area and I don't feel safe going outside early morn or into the evening.
Weather is temperamental.
The city is grotty and definitely not one I like.

I've talked to holiday provider about at least moving hotels but they've refused. I've spoken to 2 different people.

Do I just give this up as a bad job, lose about £1500 and get a flight home? I can't afford another holiday anytime soon.

I'm not much of a crier but I cried tonight. I've travelled alone before so I'm usually a very confident traveller.

If you really hate it and there is nowhere appealing nearby then you may aswell come home.

SilenceInside · Yesterday 20:34

Given your responses to the questions people are asking, it would seem like you do want to go home, so just do that. I don’t think anyone here will be able to persuade you to stay in your mystery shitty city if you’re there and you don’t want to stay!

EverMissWicklowSometimes · Yesterday 20:34

I'd pay for a new hotel in a nicer area. If you feel safer you'd be able to get out and enjoy yourself a bit more.
I don't think any European city would be so bad that I couldn't amuse myself there for a few more days!

Crunched · Yesterday 20:35

Frankfurt? That is the only European city I have visited that would give me similar issues- obvs not been everywhere though!
You can get taxis door to door to avoid walking through the area (make are the hotel make the booking) I'm sure between us we will know of good restaurants/ bars/ theatres but without knowing where you are...
Orherwise it's room service and Netflix

Lifestooshort71 · Yesterday 20:35

I'd fly home and have a chill-out break locally. Sometimes you have to admit you're beaten 💐

LadyWiddiothethird · Yesterday 20:38

Naples is fabulous. Why not say where you are?Nobody can advise you if you don’t name the City, just get a flight home.Problem solved.

malefields · Yesterday 20:38

Difficult to say anything without knowing where you are to be honest

Sounds like Naples!

I was thinking the same. If it is Naples there are trains to lots of places from there, including Pompeii, Ercolano, Sorrento and Salerno etc. The Centrale train station is a bit grotty alright, BUT there is a station over the road from the main one Napoli Porta Nolana which is far more civilised and goes to the same places. There are ferries to towns all along the Amalfi coast for day trips too.

Where are you OP? Lots of people willing to help you, if you really want to stay there a bit longer.

I get this - and I really do; I went to a European capital for ONE DAY when the apartment was such a shit hole I got a taxi back to the airport and flew home. It was pre internet so I really did feel stuck. I am not proud that I threw such a hissy fit but when I got home I painted the whole downstairs in the week I had off!

These days, I would Uber it to somewhere I waned to go (although I am pretty sure you’d be fine at the train station in daytime) and maximise the time out of grotty hotel.

I would also say you’ve been there one night/two days. So arrival day and today? That’s barely recovered from the journey. Give it tomorrow with the plan of discovering the places that drew you to book there.

Ineffable23 · Yesterday 20:42

What about getting a Bolt to the station? European Uber and often very reasonably priced.

JustTalkToThem · Yesterday 20:44

DoIgohome · Yesterday 20:29

Yes I was going to do that but the area around the station is incredibly rough.

You’re not sleeping at the station you’re just walking through in the daytime. Get an uber there you’re that worried.

Though you seem to have made up you’re mind so just go home.

It’s worth considering booking a Food Tour. We now do them for every city we go to early on as they help us get our bearings AND we find the great food stops. There are always solo travellers on the ones we book. I’m not fishing for where you are but others have mentioned Rome and Naples and we adored both with the help of such a tour!

PJ98 · Yesterday 20:47

I'm wondering why it's a massive secret 🤔

Wherever you are (and I don't understand the reluctance to say where!), get a train to the next town, nearest scenic spot, wherever. Get out of the city and go for broke with a different hotel. I wouldn't lose £1.5k just to give up on the country.

Come on, you are a seasoned solo traveller. Get those solo boots on, do a search and move on. I would. Also, there may be other parts of the city that are great too. Many cities have grotty bits, but other parts are delightful. Have you gone out and about to wander around other parts?

But look, if you don't want to do that, then come home. No other answer really is there?

This. If you are not prepared to say where you are or listen to any suggestions, then what is the point in posting? This isnt an echo chamber and there there are actually lots of things you can do to make things better.

DoIgohome · Yesterday 20:49

Thanks for the advice all. I won't be saying where I am so move on if that's all you can talk about. Thank you.

I can't understand why you won't reveal the place. It's so strange, nobody will identify you from it. I want to know where you are so I can put it on my list of places not to bother with!

OK, have a nice flight home love.

Dannytwophones · Yesterday 20:50

Every major city has rough areas and nice areas. Just move hotel to somewhere nicer, or spend the day exploring a better area. The whole city can't be horrible.

godmum56 · Yesterday 20:50

But you will lose money to go home. Why not get a lovely hotel and try to make the best of it?

sunk cost fallacy
OP can go or stay and either way she won't get the money back
She can try to improve it by throwing more money at it if she can afford to.

In any case the original money is not coming back.

mumofoneisonozempic · Yesterday 20:51

If youre not happy then go home and have a staycation with your fave foods and tv shows x

Mumdiva99 · Yesterday 20:52

Get a cab to the station and go elsewhere.
Or actually tell use which city you are in and we can help.

Well nobody can offer any real practical advice if you don’t, so you might as well cut your losses and go home.

Is it because its London? 😆

But honestly, what an opportunity for adventure! Pack up, head to the station, the country is your oyster! (whichever country it happens to be).

What are we supposed to post then? People are trying to help....Oh I get it:- you created the thread because you want to go home and felt you needed this to be okay-ed by us. Right, I see now....

It's okay to go home. Safe journey back. Hope this helps?!
