Do I just go home?

I've been on holiday for 2 days. I hate where I am (European city).

A lot of issues.
I can't find any good places to eat in a walkable distance.
My hotel is pretty grotty (not dirty, just old).
Hotel in a dodgy area and I don't feel safe going outside early morn or into the evening.
Weather is temperamental.
The city is grotty and definitely not one I like.

I've talked to holiday provider about at least moving hotels but they've refused. I've spoken to 2 different people.

Do I just give this up as a bad job, lose about £1500 and get a flight home? I can't afford another holiday anytime soon.

I'm not much of a crier but I cried tonight. I've travelled alone before so I'm usually a very confident traveller.

Just go home
drives me mad when people go to cities and expect some Disney version. It’s a real place with real life happening

or people booking cheap accommodation in notoriously expensive cities and expecting luxury

Has to be Naples

Everyone knows Naples is a rough diamond surely!
i loved it

ZeusandClio · Yesterday 22:00

If it's Nice (biggest shithole I've ever been to) do day trips to Monaco and San Remo. Don't walk around in your own at night. Or go home, it's foul.

Yes I was going to do that but the area around the station is incredibly rough.

Uber to station

I think a key issue may be that the OP is travelling alone…

Exactly. So she could harness the collective expertise of MN to help her turn things around if we knew where she was.

Yes true. But that isn’t quite what I meant…

Just say where it is! Maybe people can help!

Don't! Some of us have tried....

DrumsPleaseFab · Yesterday 22:10

It is classified apparently, OP has left in a huff as people kept asking this extremely unreasonable question in their attempt to help

Minasama · Yesterday 22:11

I think this depends where you are. If it’s Paris or Rome, get Ubers to the main attractions/museums, do some sightseeing and eat downtown at night.

If it’s somewhere smaller without main attractions or a good centre, maybe it would be better to come home.

I used to travel for work in Paris and I never went out in the evening except with colleagues so fully with you. It just feels rough and crime-ridden and the town planning is not pedestrian-friendly in a lot of cases. Proper shanty town homeless encampments as well, never seen anything approaching that in the UK except at Charing Cross. People had built themselves shacks with chimneys. Awful.

I don't want to say where I am thanks.

Because the place is fine, and we would know once you say?

Sounds like Naples!

That's what I was thinking. I'm also a seasoned solo traveller and fortunately was only in Naples very briefly on my way to somewhere else, but I couldn't get out of there fast enough and have absolutely no desire to go back.

Sweetpea333 · Yesterday 22:13

If it is Naples, I stayed by the station and it was fine. £1500 is a huge amount of money for a European city break!

Thanks for the advice all. I won't be saying where I am so move on if that's all you can talk about. Thank you.

Well done for making your boundaries clear, and for sticking to them, despite the whinging from some posters!

Fuck me, you’re one grumpy bugger. You’re in a crap situation but people are trying to help. No need to be so rude!

Sheffield

Arf! I've only been to Sheffield once in - er - around 1967. I'm sure it's a great holiday destination these days, though.

Huh? How on earth did you come to that conclusion?
And why on earth would @DoIgohome need to make up a lie about staying in a crappy place? 😅

I liked Nice!

This was my first thought! round the Midi station is GRIM.

Yikes, I'll be in Brussels in August. First time too, but only for two nights before moving on to Ghent and the WW1 sites around Ypres, then on to Waterloo. We will be using Centraal Station to get to Ghent and hiring a car from there. I just want to see the Grand Place and a few other places in the city. We might just stay one night in the end. Not decided fully, hotel booked but can cancel.

I'd rather not say where I am

Kind of hard to offer advice then, isn’t it? Can you say the country at least?

But you’re anonymous, you’re in a city of hundreds of thousands of people, if not more,
just say where you are and someone will save your holiday.
stop being daft and petulant, we’re here to help!
