Do I just go home?

DoIgohome · Yesterday 20:18

I've been on holiday for 2 days. I hate where I am (European city).

A lot of issues.
I can't find any good places to eat in a walkable distance.
My hotel is pretty grotty (not dirty, just old).
Hotel in a dodgy area and I don't feel safe going outside early morn or into the evening.
Weather is temperamental.
The city is grotty and definitely not one I like.

I've talked to holiday provider about at least moving hotels but they've refused. I've spoken to 2 different people.

Do I just give this up as a bad job, lose about £1500 and get a flight home? I can't afford another holiday anytime soon.

I'm not much of a crier but I cried tonight. I've travelled alone before so I'm usually a very confident traveller.

Paris?

There’s a reason Paris Syndrome is a thing. Most of it is totally mank.

I thought this particularly if you are near the Gare du nord.
whenever you are, could you google the “nice quarter” and to hell with it, salvage your hols with a move to - not necessarily luxury - the equivalent of a safe chain hotel (anything in the IHG umbrella) for example?

If you're somewhere like Paris or Budapest, download the Uber app and just go everywhere with that. The fares are so cheap, the app is really useful when you don't speak the language and you can track them to within an inch so it's safer and you can see how far away they are from you and so on.

My guess is Athens. I really loved Athens but the majority of the city is graffiti and the metro felt dodgy as, lots of organised crime and pickpockets. But any city has absolutely lovely areas and I would try and make the most of it, go out in the day, get taxis if you’re coming back late. My guess is you know the good areas as you must have planned before going, but if you don’t, do some research and try and enjoy yourself. Spend the day out of your hotel eating, coffee shops, sightseeing, so it won’t matter what’s in walking distance to your hotel

Brussels?

wow are people going to an alternative universe? I went to Rome with two young kids and they say it was one of their favourite holidays. I lived in Paris for two years and though I didn’t like the people much the city is beautiful. Bruge? Only worth a couple days but pretty. Barcelona? Fascinating city. London, well I live here so…
OP if you don’t say where you are people can’t help you find a nicer/safer neighbourhood. But seems like you just aren’t in the right headspace to go somewhere different so just go home.

Brussels?

This was my first thought! round the Midi station is GRIM.

LeticiaMorales · Yesterday 21:41

Mate, it sounds like you're not up for having a holiday there. Just go home. It'll cost you, but I can't see an alternative.
Cut your losses. You'll start to feel better once you're on your way home. Good luck.

The travel company have said no to hotel move or refund

Have you told the travel company that you are a lone female traveller and fear for your safety?

I absolutely loved Bruges! Plus I'm one of those odd people who likes Paris and find the people friendly.

Go home

I went to an awful AI last year in a crap resort and the weather was cooler than average. I cried on the third morning, mostly out of frustration as it cost us a lot and I really needed a break. DP refused to fly home as DCs would be upset. We spent loads of money going to different resorts each day to get away from the dive and lots of eating out. It turned into a sight seeing holiday when I wanted a 'fly and flop' holiday.

I regret not going home, I was more stressed out staying.

What places did you actually manage to stay in? For research purposes....

"We have left Paris ( due to riots) , Naples ( way too scary) , Bruges (bored to tears) Puglia (drug addicts) south of France (wild fires) Northern France (depressing) Malaga (Hated the place) It’s okay to not like it and leave op"

I'm not the person you asked the question of, but,

Capri rather than Naples

Strasbourg rather than Paris (although even Strasbourg is getting a bit dodgy these days)

For the south of France I would say somewhere like Aix-en-Provence and the region to the north of there.

For northern France, this might not count but I would suggest, again Strasbourg, or go slightly further east into the Black Forest and the spa towns like Baden-Baden.

Malaga - ok, fair point. But maybe look at the other ends of the country, perhaps Bilbao or Mallorca.

Bruges, Puglia - Yes, totally understandable wanting to leave those places as soon as possible.

sonjadog · Yesterday 21:49

It amuses me that Naples comes up so often in this kind of thread, because we loved Naples. But yes, it is kinda sketchy, especially at night. We liked the vibe. :-) Most European cities are appealing around the central stations, for some reason, but one of the great things about European holidaying is that it is very easy to get a train to somewhere else. If I were you, I would look at relocating rather than going home.

But it does sound like going home is all you are interested in, OP. In which case, just do it. Travelling alone isn't for everyone and if you don't like it, then don't do it.

Exactly bloody bizarre if you ask me. How the hell does she expect anyone to recommend anywhere to go to . All this thread has done is to become a guessing the city game

Rome is far and away the best city I have ever been to. I'd love to spend a month there.

What a miserable whinger. You're in Europe! In summer! Make the most of it princess.

Thanks for the advice all. I won't be saying where I am so move on if that's all you can talk about. Thank you.

Genuine question what do you think is gonna happen if you name the city you're in? Is it because you've told lots of people irl you're going there and it will be identifying and then everyone will know you're having a bad time?

I didn't consider that. I assumed she'd got herself in a paranoid mess!
