Do I just go home?

I've been on holiday for 2 days. I hate where I am (European city).

A lot of issues.
I can't find any good places to eat in a walkable distance.
My hotel is pretty grotty (not dirty, just old).
Hotel in a dodgy area and I don't feel safe going outside early morn or into the evening.
Weather is temperamental.
The city is grotty and definitely not one I like.

I've talked to holiday provider about at least moving hotels but they've refused. I've spoken to 2 different people.

Do I just give this up as a bad job, lose about £1500 and get a flight home? I can't afford another holiday anytime soon.

I'm not much of a crier but I cried tonight. I've travelled alone before so I'm usually a very confident traveller.

OP posts:

Yes but she's obviously just freaked out and doesn't want to say where she is (I'm not saying it's rational!!) Of course the rational thing would be to say and then people could help more, but if you're scared then you won't want to say if you're not thinking straight

I'm only trying to help.
She doesn't sound "freaked out" to me, she just sounds a bit stuck.

DH and I have had a couple of absolute disaster hotel / Airbnb bookings - we now make sure we take credit card wherever we go to give us the option to make a change - different location or hotel. Some of these have turned out into the most amazing stays as often you end up with a bargain booking super last minute on booking.com.

One of our worst was an Airbnb we couldn’t even find in Sicily, we drove up a dirt track, DH asked me to get out to check if it was the right number and I got chased by a dog 😂 we drove straight to the nearest town and booked into the only big hotel there, it was grand. (Visit Cefalu, it’s lovely).

Travelling alone is not for the faint hearted though and can be tough, OP.

I would sleep tonight, google where you can travel tomorrow. If in Europe you can get to loads of places by train. Get uber to the station if unsure, stations are often dodgy areas. Have a look on booking.com to see if you can find a room in a chain hotel somewhere nearby so you feel reassured it will be an ok standard.

Or go home. No shame. More research next time. If I’m with DH I am open to local hotels etc. If I’m travelling alone I tend to book big chain hotels for more peace of mind.

Why won't you reveal your location, OP? Do you think someone's going to come after you? I'm in London, can you magically tell which part I'm in?

Do you think maybe you're a little over-sensitive?

Don't! I've just got told off (twice) for asking!
Pointless trying to help.

MiniCoopers · Yesterday 21:32

For goodness sake OP I doubt any of us know you, but a lot of us have travelled. Europe is large, you can at least say a country and maybe you’ll get some helpful tips: otherwise just suck it up and go home.

Dymaxion · Yesterday 21:32

How about booking a local tour guide ? Someone who will come to the hotel and take you around the city ? Even if you just do it for a couple of days and then fly home, it won't have been a wasted trip ?

smallsilvercloud · Yesterday 21:32

tomorrow is a new day, I wouldn’t waste it, there must some sort of tourist attraction interesting nearby, search for a nicer restaurant it can’t be all bad.

IStillHearTheWaves · Yesterday 21:33

Newyearawaits · Yesterday 21:28

You need to see past this OP.
You will be sure to find interesting places.
There will be plenty of people about.

Or look up the train time and get a taxi to the station to minimise hanging around there? You seem determined to have a bad time, OP!

bafta16 · Yesterday 21:33

Most accomodation near a station is grim tbh.

PMA1981 · Yesterday 21:33

Sounds like attention seeking not sharing where you are. Why would you hide it.

if you shared where you were it could helped seasoned travellers in that area suggest a course of action in alternate hotels, closer other cities or resorts or things to do if you tough it out.

odd and detrimental to yourself if you won’t say where you are.

Lots of ppl flying to Napels atm , just over an hour to lake como and Bellagio, also easy to Switzerland. There are organised tours that are reasonable. Surely something similar wherever you are.

What? Are you confusing Naples with Milan?

BeMoreBear · Yesterday 21:35

Shedmistress · Yesterday 20:26

Is it Rome? Complete shithole. Hated it.

I'm with you there! I did have a nice lunch one day, but the rest was crowded, dirty, full of tourists (I know, I know). Just not what I expected at all. Florence, on the other hand...😍

HowSweatyMess · Yesterday 21:35

DoIgohome · Yesterday 20:49

Thanks for the advice all. I won't be saying where I am so move on if that's all you can talk about. Thank you.

Are you the only person in the world there then? Is DoIgohome your actual real name?
Yes. I can see how that might be outing.

Bellyblueboy · Yesterday 21:35

Can you google day trips? Is there a hop on hop off bus you can do? Guided walking tours? Even a nicer hotel you can go and lie by a pool for a day and treat yourself to some cocktails and a lunch.?

Frugalgal · Yesterday 21:36

SummerPeonies2026 · Yesterday 21:29

You just fly in and out of Naples airport and that’s it, you can’t stay there. You fly in, and as soon as you can you leave in a registered pre ordered licensed car. The roads are horrendous, the gangs are worse, and really quite scary areas. Don’t stay in Naples. You can travel out to much nicer places.

Oh I'm not going anywhere near there didn't seem to be much to recommend it, I just remember so many cheap holidays going when I was booking our holiday this year.

Good to know for future reference though!

CelticSilver · Yesterday 21:36

Maybe it's you 🤔

Oh ok see I'm getting freaked out vibes!

I KNOW you are! It would be much easier if she told us where she was, but paranoia may have got the better of her.

Anyahyacinth · Yesterday 21:36

Is it feasible to book taxis or ubers eveey day to take you to a nicer part of town? You can wake up in the morning, book the taxi out to a nicer part and then hang out for a while and taxi back. It may cost a bit more but would save the holiday.
I assume there are at least some nice parts of the city ?! If not then book a day trip and taxi to /from station

Or a taxi to a five star hotel...book for breakfast ...later relax in the bar or foyer..read their magazines or papers..order dessert...a lovely way to be spoilt and super inexpensive. You are often offered free postcards, I've asked reception about stamps and they've posted them. Book a spa treatment and use their pool all day...loads of options like this

Carandache18 · Yesterday 21:36

There's nothing wrong with calling it a day and going home. I've done it myself. You're not letting anyone down, you're just making a choice.
I understand there's a sort of guilty 'wasting money' feeling about it, but it's your money.
I once stayed 2 days, got out and came home, and was so glad I did it.
Good luck and safe journeys.

bafta16 · Yesterday 21:36

You may have travelled alone before but your life and mood may be different now. It's a horrible sinking feeling. I reckon I would look for other humans prett damn quick.

BeMoreBear · Yesterday 21:37

OP, I did this once, to Paris. Stayed one night, then back on the train home as soon as I could the next day. It just wasn't the right time for me. If you're miserable, no point staying. Just go home, chalk it up to experience. Good luck.

BitOutOfPractice · Yesterday 21:38

DoIgohome · Yesterday 20:29

Yes I was going to do that but the area around the station is incredibly rough.

In fairness the areas around the station in most cities is usually rough.

Im not sure why you’re reluctant to say where you are. I’m pretty well travelled in Europe and I’d love to advise you.

Ok. Well perhaps she needs help that we can't give her

Gonners · Yesterday 21:38

Thinking about it, my money's on London.

GimmieABreakOr3 · Yesterday 21:38

Hate how people post threads like this and don’t say where they are. I’d just go home then and cut your losses, it’s not like we can really help advise.
