Do I just go home?

I've been on holiday for 2 days. I hate where I am (European city).

A lot of issues.
I can't find any good places to eat in a walkable distance.
My hotel is pretty grotty (not dirty, just old).
Hotel in a dodgy area and I don't feel safe going outside early morn or into the evening.
Weather is temperamental.
The city is grotty and definitely not one I like.

I've talked to holiday provider about at least moving hotels but they've refused. I've spoken to 2 different people.

Do I just give this up as a bad job, lose about £1500 and get a flight home? I can't afford another holiday anytime soon.

I'm not much of a crier but I cried tonight. I've travelled alone before so I'm usually a very confident traveller.

Can you book yourself somewhere nice even for a couple of nights? Check out Booking.com or something.

AnneLovesGilbert · Today 20:21

Sorry you’re feeling so low. What made you want to go there and what can you salvage from the original idea?

CharlotteStreetW1 · Today 20:22

I think if you could say where you are, people might be able to come up with some suggestions for places, restaurants and/or activities. What attracted you to book it?

I did think about that but reluctant to pay out more to be honest.

Everything looked very pretty and safe when I researched but the reality is far from this. It maybe was in the past but now full of graffiti, drunks, drug addicts and run down streets. I can get all that at home!

I'd rather not say where I am

But you will lose money to go home. Why not get a lovely hotel and try to make the best of it?

hobbydrama · Today 20:25

Can you afford to move to another hotel? Have there been any issues that mean you may get a refund?

I’d have a good trawl through booking.com/airbnb and look at places to visit at the same time. Rather than leave completely could you try to salvage something so you still enjoy your holiday?

fluffiphlox · Today 20:26

Stick a nice hotel on your credit card and sod it.

Why? We’ll be able to give much more helpful advice if you do.

Is it Rome? Complete shithole. Hated it.

I can get a cheap flight home so would barely spend anymore whereas hotels are expensive so I'd be paying hundreds out for even a couple of nights.

is there a train station nearby with good links to other places? Could you have some day trips to do a bit of sight-seeing elsewhere?

The travel company have said no to hotel move or refund

Paris?

There’s a reason Paris Syndrome is a thing. Most of it is totally mank.

Yes I was going to do that but the area around the station is incredibly rough.

If you can get a cheap flight home I’d just do that, then relax in your own space, and chalk this one up to experience. No point making yourself miserable or throwing good money after bad.

palona · Today 20:30

Wherever you are (and I don't understand the reluctance to say where!), get a train to the next town, nearest scenic spot, wherever. Get out of the city and go for broke with a different hotel. I wouldn't lose £1.5k just to give up on the country.

Come on, you are a seasoned solo traveller. Get those solo boots on, do a search and move on. I would. Also, there may be other parts of the city that are great too. Many cities have grotty bits, but other parts are delightful. Have you gone out and about to wander around other parts?

But look, if you don't want to do that, then come home. No other answer really is there?

@TheLightSideOfTheMoon
My first thought was Paris too

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · Today 20:31

It’s a big European city. They’re all as jazzy and as rough as each other and most people are completely fine.

Go out, have a lovely day, enjoy yourself. It’s summer. You will be back before dark. If you’re really concerned get a taxi to the door of the hotel. You won’t need to walk anywhere.

hattie43 · Today 20:32

Have a look on Get Your Guide and choose a couple of day trips to break it up and get out the area .

OohRains · Today 20:32

Sounds like Naples!

ExitPursuedByABare · Today 20:33

Naples?
Something must have drawn you to book there. Go out and find it.
