Do I just go home?

DoIgohome · Yesterday 20:18

I've been on holiday for 2 days. I hate where I am (European city).

A lot of issues.
I can't find any good places to eat in a walkable distance.
My hotel is pretty grotty (not dirty, just old).
Hotel in a dodgy area and I don't feel safe going outside early morn or into the evening.
Weather is temperamental.
The city is grotty and definitely not one I like.

I've talked to holiday provider about at least moving hotels but they've refused. I've spoken to 2 different people.

Do I just give this up as a bad job, lose about £1500 and get a flight home? I can't afford another holiday anytime soon.

I'm not much of a crier but I cried tonight. I've travelled alone before so I'm usually a very confident traveller.

Nothing changes until something changes.
Tell us where you are (if you're in a city you are just one face in s million). There's no need to be secretive.
Another poster may be able to suggest somewhere better to stay.

Can you get Uber/taxi (booked by hotel) to go either to the locations you want to visit or a different station so you’re more comfortable travelling around?

Middletoleft · Yesterday 20:55

If that's the way you feel and you're not interested in making the most of a bad job get yourself on the next flight home. What else can people suggest.

SummerPeonies2026 · Yesterday 20:55

Just leave op. It’s shit nothing is going to make it safer/better.

The weather is beautiful in England/UK just come home and book a lovely hotel here with a pool and relax. This isn’t a holiday. We have abandoned holidays, your safety is more important. I have never felt anything other than relief to leave. Some places are dreadful. Not your problem. Look after yourself - salvage your annual leave.

you have to realise that stay or go, the 1.5 k is GONE google sunk cost fallacy

Yes I know about sunk cost fallacy surprisingly enough! Doesn't matter, OP is going home so she knows about it too!

Thanks for the advice all. I won't be saying where I am so move on if that's all you can talk about. Thank you.

Why post? Just fly home if you don’t want help to stay.

Beachbeach · Yesterday 20:56

jusy go home OP

dotdotdotdash · Yesterday 20:57

Just call it a day and go home. Can’t understand why you’d not say where you are so you might get some specific advice but you obviously have your reasons.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · Yesterday 20:58

How much will your flight be home?

would you at least give the name of nearest airport /airport you are booked to fly home from and see if any other MNers can give you suggestions of other destinations you could go visit /stay for a day or two?

or just come home. Not sure why you are secretive about where you are.

palona · Yesterday 20:58

All together now - you have our permission to go home from the mystery city. 😊

TulipsMakeMeHappy · Yesterday 20:58

Can you get the hotel to organise you a taxi each day to somewhere safer you can sightsee? My sympathy though, it's a horry situation when you've saved all year, done your research, but still ended up in a rubbish place.

Stompythedinosaur · Yesterday 20:59

I'm not sure what you were expecting from this thread without saying where you are.

I struggle to imagine there's anywhere in the world that doesn't have something worth seeing. If you don't want help finding it, then have a google yourself.

I wouldn't go home, I'd take what pleasure I could from the holiday.

What places did you actually manage to stay in? For research purposes....

SummerPeonies2026 · Yesterday 21:01

Can I just point out that Op may not feel safe, so please respect her wishes, she won’t be disclosing her location for you to ‘fix’ her holiday

OP’s post made me think of Naples! I was so on edge the whole time we were there, I felt really uncomfortable at night

TalkToTheHand123 · Yesterday 21:02

Go to Tonnarello, it's quite nice.

Well it's quite relevant!

TealQueen · Yesterday 21:03

Can you ask the hotel (or other travellers at breakfast ) where they have enjoyed eating or visiting?

Fairy36000 · Yesterday 21:04

This was my reaction to Naples on the first night. Cried myself to sleep, as i’d inadvertently booked my room in the roughest area and it was scary. Yes the train station area is sketchy but it’s ok once you’re in.

I booked some day trips to Sorrento and the rest of the Amalfi coast. Spent a day in museums and gallieries, spent a day at Pompeii. I went out at about 9.30 AM and got back before dark and I was fine.

Now I’m desperate to go back!

Hope you manage to make the best of it.

What's going to happen?

AiryFairy1 · Yesterday 21:05

Not sure if you’ve already done this, but can you ask ChatGPT / other AI to plan an itinerary for you? We have done this for our trip to Athens and while we likely won’t do everything, it has given us some excellent ideas.

But if you’re not in mood to problem solve, then save yourself the misery and head home.

PinkyFlamingo · Yesterday 21:05

DoIgohome · Yesterday 20:27

I don't want to say where I am thanks.

Pointless post then.

Victorius19 · Yesterday 21:05

I would read the riot act to the holiday company saying you don't feel safe as a solo female traveller and threaten them with social media if they're not prepared to help you out.

A better hotel would at least make you feel safer.

Gonners · Yesterday 21:06

If it's Barcelona, get a train to Girona. I did that once, because Barcelona felt unsafe. I stayed there for 8 years.
