Would you book a safari holiday in South Africa while TTC?

Would you book a holiday whilst you are TTC?

For context, we are looking at booking a safari in South Africa so it would be a 2 week trip with lots of activities.

Are you normally celibate on holidays? If not, why would this be any different?

bugalugs45 · 18/06/2026 17:53

How quickly is this holiday likely to happen ? If I was ttc and going within next month or so then I’d just carry on as normal , but if for next year and could potentially be 7/8 months pregnant then I wouldn’t

Tiddlywinkly · 18/06/2026 17:54

I'm a bit confused what the issue is.

For what it's worth, I've known loads of people who got pregnant on holiday. Including me - twice!

Tiddlywinkly · 18/06/2026 17:55

Do you mean you are worried you will be pregnant whilst away?

Tabarnak · 18/06/2026 17:59

So if you book now you could be how many weeks pg when you go?

I probably wouldn’t go white water rafting or bungee jumping once pg.

What (if any) jabs are needed for SA?

Is there Zika virus there? Do you need anti malarials?

If no issue around any of these factors, sure!

We would be going in April - sorry, I missed that vital info!

Bear in mind that some people may struggle to get PG but others won’t. You may even have had the baby by next April.

Ok. Do you mean:

(1) Do you start to TTC now, and book a holiday for 10 months time - no, that's bonkers as you can't fly long haul after a certain date, and it would be a bad idea when heavily pregnant. Or you might have a very newborn baby, which won't be Safari friendly.
(2) Is it ok to TTC on holiday - people have unprotected sex on holiday all the time, I don't see the issue.

This is why I am torn and don’t know what to do.

It’s scenario 1 - do we book a holiday whilst TTC with the knowledge that I could get pregnant between now and then. We could even have a baby by then if things happen quickly.

It would depend on the cancellation policy/how much deposit you would lose/when final payment is due.

But in all reality, probably not. If you’ve been ttc for a long time unsuccessfully, I would say don’t put your life on hold any longer but if you’ve only just started ttc then see how you get on for a few months.

WildCherryBlossom · 18/06/2026 19:50

I would either bring the holiday forward a bit or hold off ttc until Sept / Oct.

Definitely not then. It's takes most couples less than 6m to conceive - about 60%, 3 months or less, so the likelihood is that you'll either be 3rd trimester or have a baby.

I'm all for traveling with babies (I went on holiday with my newborn abroad), but a safari would be a stretch.

WhereverIlaymycatthatsmyhome · 18/06/2026 19:52

No, definitely not.

You have no way of knowing how quickly you might fall pregnant so it would be a foolish thing to do.

Croissants94 · 18/06/2026 19:56

I have my answer! Thanks all. I will re-evaluate early next year.

its a really bad idea. Plus isn’t South Africa a Zika area?

mindutopia · 20/06/2026 14:44

I wouldn’t go anywhere with zika, dengue or malaria risk while or before TTC.

I absolutely would go travelling though. Dh and I started TTC at the end of several weeks backpacking around India. I was pregnant a month later, but we weren’t anywhere with particular risk for mosquito borne infections. It was wonderful and you literally won’t get to do that again until your youngest child is probably a teen, so do it now. Just choose wisely.

suburberphobe · 21/06/2026 03:50

Safari in South Africa is Kruger Park I presume?

It's the only place in South Africa that has malaria so no, I wouldn't be TTC whilst on those pills.
