Chronic wound after dog attack, 6 months later

ok so I need to know if I am being extreme to be so frustrated and annoyed with this situation.

long story short I was attacked by a dog in November and had surgery. It got infected and I had 3 further surgeries a few weeks later. It is now a chronic wound and simply won't heal, I've had 5 more surgeries and I go to the hospital every week and they umm and ahh and say come back next week. I have a hole in my leg, I am in pain and it seems endless. I will post progression photos but it looks worse if anything than when it first happened. I have never been under a doctors care, just see the wound care nurse every week and every so often she will get a doctor and I go back to surgery. I've had enough and not really sure where to go from here

I'm not surprised you're crying i would at least have got you beans and cheese, what an emotional roller-coaster, best wishes for tomorrow

BlondeFool · 07/06/2026 20:10

Can you order a takeaway to the hospital? Can your husband drop food to you?

HundredAcreOwl · 07/06/2026 20:17

TheBusyMoose · 07/06/2026 19:35

Yes they want to see if the infection completely clears but I have a referral to dermatology anyway as the surrounding skin is hideous.

in other news I just sobbed at the poor hca because I haven't eaten since Friday and will be nil by mouth again tomorrow and they haven't accounted for my nut allergy so all they can offer me for dinner is a jacket potato with no topping. Despite me telling them at both breakfast and lunch and them having nothing I could eat. Poor lady I proper bawled

I am so sorry to hear this. A year ago I was in hospital, and they kept changing their minds about whether I needed surgery or not. The lady responsible for food was not happy when she saw I was suddenly allowed to eat, with no food planned for me.

I so hope tomorrow goes well for you, and you can eat safely, but more importantly this is finally sorted.

Bawling was more than justified.

Oh bless you. I had this a few years ago. Over 36hrs nil by mouth, whilst on a metronidazole iv which just made me almost vom constantly.
Oh and when the anesthetist finally came to see me before surgery, she was non too impressed that it hadnt occurred to them to give me fluids other than the metronidazole.
Hope you can get some food delivered some how.

Morrisons26 · 07/06/2026 21:50

You poor love Moose. You poor poor thing. That sounds like such a horrific experience and not having anything to eat is the final straw!!!

I hope you can get some sleep and it sounds like finally something is going to be done and this could be the last trough you are in and you'll start to improve.

Sending get well wishes and so much luck for the next part. Your updates have made me feel much more positive and like someone is ontop of it now. Good!!!

concertinacornflake · 07/06/2026 21:56

It does feel like they're focused now, I really hope this is a turning point.

Rosecoffeecup · 08/06/2026 10:03

Hope you had a good night and managed to source some food. Best wishes for todays procedure

MyrtleLion · 08/06/2026 12:36

I’m glad they are now acting, but it’s has been a long time without this oversight. I hope it’s over soon.

I was also nil by mouth for four consecutive days when they cancelled my operation four times. Since then I’ve discovered I only have one kidney, so it’s no wonder I was very dehydrated.

Wishing you the very best xx

AdarajamesAgain · 10/06/2026 21:06

Sometimes healthcare really can let us down, I've various chronic conditions so used to the ' you have X, what do you expect' type response from GPs / medical persons and having to fight to get them to consider something else so I totally get your utter exhaustion of having to fight for something you know is needing some additional investigation / care.

So sorry you had to reach this point before treatment, but hopefully this time they will take the time and fully sort it for you. All this supposed focus on sepsis and they've left you suffering like this with something that could / has very much become sepsis.

Really off that they can't at least find you something safe to eat! Isn't there someone who can bring you in something safe, if you were local to me I'd happily deliver you food so if family / friends can't help, then ask here or in local group as there will be the support out there.

Wishing you all the best for a successful outcome this time! 💐

Crafta · 10/06/2026 21:43

Hope you are OK now and managed to get something to eat!

TheBusyMoose · 12/06/2026 11:15

Sorry for going quiet. I really haven't been very well. Had sepsis confirmed but my body is and has been doing a really
good job of fighting it. They're worried I will deteriorate they stop the IV antibiotics as they aren't sure they've got all of the infection given how ill I have been and for how long.
feeling miserable and sorry for myself but at least they're acting on it now

Gosh, I’m so sorry it took so long for them to see the problem. 💐
It sounds as though they should be doing a case review about why you weren’t accelerated for proper treatment.

Rosecoffeecup · 12/06/2026 11:22

You poor thing. At least they are taking it seriously now but it shouldn't have got to this point.

How is the wound looking/feeling after the most recent surgery?

MissMoneyFairy · 12/06/2026 13:20

You poor thing, what a shame they didn't take you more seriously, I'd expect an explanation when the time is right. I hope all the specialists can get this sorted, microbiology, plastics, orthopaedics, and that you get your strength and health back soon. I would not seek the advise of the plastics nurse, that should be investigated especially as they grew strep. Wishing you a peaceful recovery.

BlondeFool · 12/06/2026 13:21

You need an urgent case review as you’ve been fighting infection for 6 months!!! Hope you recovering 💐

MyrtleLion · 12/06/2026 17:28

I’m glad you have the proper care.

Keep resting. Wishing you the best.

Morrisons26 · 12/06/2026 17:39

You need specialist advice at this point - like properly specialist advice. Did they send the wound tissue to microbiology to see what bacteria you actually have in the wound? This is the only way to tell if the antibiotic will successfully treat it. make sure they keep you on it until you see signs of positive closure of the wound. They must not stop it too soon or all the same problems will just come back and the bacteria will increase resistance. You need some healing to occur, even if it's weeks you stay in hospital, it needs to be going in the right direction.

Refuse to leave, don't be fobbed off. It's absolutely criminal what they've done to you but increasingly I feel we are seeing a breakdown of all kinds of medical care in this country. You are a casualty and it's a tragedy for all of us.

Please keep resting and please try to fight for yourself. It sounds like there is no one else who will. You matter and you are worth it. Keep posting here and we will keep supporting you as best we can.

Update still in hospital. Had an allergic reaction to antibiotics so was quite unwell again. No sign of when I might be able to go home. Hole in my leg is massive but much cleaner

Oh and my hb levels were 75 so they're going to do something about that as well

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 16/06/2026 19:12

HB? Im glad it’s getting cleaner. Sounds like progress even if it’s not sorted yet.

TheBusyMoose · 16/06/2026 19:14

Haemoglobin I think

I hope you can start to more actively recover, if you see what I mean. You’ve been poorly such a long time, it will take some serious TLC to get you back up to spec!

Thanks for the update - but you poor poor thing, what a nightmare!
Still, at least you're in hospital now, so 'hopefully[ being properly cared for instead of the run-around you'd been getting before that.

I do hope things have turned a corner for you at last.

I love dogs, and have one myself, but it's still unforgivable for owners to let them out of control like that. My MiL got a bite from a neighbour's dog some years back, but because he was a smallish "cute" dog the owner just laughed it off, and for the sake of neighbourly relations, she didn't want to complain or report it - but it took AGES to heal. Not all that deep but it was on that fragile skin on the front of the shin where there's no fat under it, and it just wouldn't heal. They have another dog now, and he's not properly trained either. They're convinced it's just the dog's temperament, but it's poor training.

I hope you've now had a transfusion op, a low hb won't be much good with wound healing.

Sorry to hear still in hospital but it seems like progress is being made. Hope you're feeling ok mentally, it can be gruelling being away from home and family staying in an often noisy and chaotic environment Flowers.

Isobel201 · 17/06/2026 12:53

Its looking a lot better, hopefully it'll continue healing now. Thanks for your update OP x
