Trainers for weight training

I’m looking for recommendations for gym trainers. I train with heavy weights 3-4 times a week. Don’t need to wear them outside of the gym as I have other trainers for playing sport.
Also, I’m wondering how often people replace their trainers? I only use them in the gym (about 4 hours a week) so they don’t really look worn out - are there other signs they need replacing?

I’m terrible- I wear cross training trainers (New Balance) which are really for running. Because I like the cushioning and I train metcon (I think it’s called “hybrid” now)

But I know lots of my gym buddies wear Nike Metcons. I’m going to try them at some point, I think.

Thanks. I’ll have a look.

Converse are good for weighttraining because the soles are so flat.

Metcons or barefoot shoes.

In fact anything other than running trainers (@YellowAsteroid 😁) as they distribute the weight differently and affect balance / stability!

Well I manage - and lift quite heavy!

I have metcons - they are so much more supportive and stable than the old running shoes I used to wear.

Jellybean85 · 05/08/2024 07:13

I wear the Nike Metcon too and because I don't wear them outside last years
. I like a nice solid flat base for especially squats and deadlifts. I have lovely spongy running trainers but would hate lifting in them

Depends how serious you are. I used to use metcons which are a good all rounder, designed for cross fit really. I now use Adidas lifting shoes for squats as they have a raised heel, and vans for deadlifts cos they're flat. Metcons don't have the same raised heel, and as they're not flat make deadlifts a bit harder as you have to pull further. But they're tiny differences really unless you're looking to be a powerlifter for example. Metcons are great if you're less specialist.

I asked my PT about this in a session yesterday and his view is that unless I’m aiming to be an Olympian 😂 then I just need to keep perfecting my technique and keep the weight in my heels. He’s the same re gloves and using a belt. Then I deadlifted 100k, followed by a set at 90 k for 7 reps, touch and go (no resetting). So I guess I’m not doing too badly with trainers and no belt!

I just take my trainers off and do it in my socks.
Some gyms are a bit weird about you having to wear shoes the whole time for safety reasons, but I am not quite sure what protection a pair of trainers gives you!

HundredMilesAnHour · 06/08/2024 13:03

I either wear Metcons or do it in my socks (if I'm wearing non-Metcons that day). Me taking my trainers off is usually a sign things are about to get serious.

It's possible with running trainers but really not recommended. The squidge in them makes stabilising more difficult and therefore more likely to get niggles and injuries. Standard gym PT's won't care either way, but when you want to progress with lifting specifically and work with a PT or coach with experience in Oly lifting/crossfit/powerlifting, they will always recommend going harder soled.

Metcons/Nanos or similar are good shoes as they're crossfit shoes designed for lifting and a bit of cardio too, but a lot less squidge than running shoes. If you really get into powerlifting/olympic lifting then lifting shoes are definitely worth looking at, they're incredibly stable and will help with squats as have a slightly lifted heel.

Another metcon fan here. Although I have done it in my socks before and also am eyeing up some converse.

it’s an addiction once you start 😆

really like metcons for lifting weights also - some bargains to be had on Vinted!
