How much and frequently to make a difference?

I have recently started doing some basic weights and cardio routines and am loving the workouts. I am currently very overweight and have a low level of fitness following babies. Can anyone advise what kind of training I might need to do to get rid of my first stone and look a bit better. I'm currently about 4 stones overweight. Food wise, I'm going for an unprocessed, fresh approach but feel too overwhelmed with sleepless nights and homeschool to go on a diet as such. All advice welcome.

Proper strength training will help you build muscle which maintains a calorie burn. But you can't out-train a bad diet. You need to measure & count calories.

During lockdown, with no access to gym equipment, you'd need to do body weight exercises: you could do these everyday & not do too much damage to yourself!

Work towards:

  • full press ups
  • body weight squats
  • jumping squats
  • planks
  • dynamic planks ( moving from a high plank just on your hands to one on the forearms, arm by arm, then back up again - it's tough!)

If you want to add weight to these body weight work outs, you could use a weighted backpack, or weighted vest. If you use a backpack, make sure it's really closely fitted and the weight doesn't hit your lower back. You could actually use it as a sandbag, and hold it in front of you while doing squats.

Go online to find some good guides to good form: I like the MoveU programme (on Instagram).

I think the food approach is good. You need something you can sustain long term.
Try 3 meals a day each with protein and 2 veg or fruit.?
Add good habits as you get used to the existing ones.
Dont be too strict. Plan your treats eg Saturday chocolate,
Eg
Sleep, water, coffee, sugar.. Etc.
