I am really missing heavy weights

Since my gym's closed, I've been running (got my pace ip a bit) and doing at home workouts & dance classes. My gym has been good about doing live classes twice a day each day of the week. Somehow, doing a live class is more bearable than a video.

But in one of these classes we were doing squats, and I realised how much I miss squatting heavy, and deadlifting even heavier. Lifting heavy shit is so much easier than running for 30 minutes.

I don't mind the recorded sessions. The live ones my gym does are at 9 in the morning and disrupt my working day too much.

I'm lucky enough to have a home gym with heavy weights so squatting and deadlifting heavy isn't a problem. I hardly used it when my commercial gym was open because I prefer to exercise with others.

I agree. I found myself getting very bored doing 12 reps on each leg x 3 yesterday. It took so long!

Though I enjoy running (and did it a lot before getting injured) so that’s my ‘easy' thing. I just know variety is better for me!

I went to a barbell club with one of my good friends too. Suspect I’m missing that as much as the vein popping out my forehead.

If you want to know what boredom is, try a rowing machine. I spent 20 minutes on ours the the other day and decided that running wasn't so bad after all.

ThursdayLastWeek · 25/04/2020 21:27

Haha, I can believe that!

inwood · 25/04/2020 21:49

I do powerwave so at least my arms get a good workout with a Spartan bag.

iMatter · 25/04/2020 21:52

I agree. I love heavy lifting. Much as I love my rowing machine (yes, honestly) and my spin bike I would love to be lifting some heavy weights.

ARudeTerriblePerson · 25/04/2020 21:55

Anyone want to speculate when gyms might re-open? Not that I'm desperate or anything.

wowfudge · 25/04/2020 21:58

My gym is doing online classes and recorded ones too. I'm lucky to have some weights myself, but it's not the same. Id far rather walk twice the distance than run. I hate running and have a dodgy knee.

AlannaOfTrebond · 25/04/2020 22:08

Me too.

I know that I can challenge myself with body weight and resistance band exercises, but it isn't what I love doing.

I've managed to cobble together some lightish weights and resistance bands from the depths of my cupboards.

I used to be so spoilt with pretty much a full gym at my parents house. My much smaller city centre home has no room for such luxuires so I figure the only choice I have is to get creative and get on with it. (Doesn't mean I fucking like it!)

RJnomore1 · 25/04/2020 22:10

You can’t even buy a weight bench set for live nor money either.

ThursdayLastWeek · 26/04/2020 08:38

No, I was looking up barbell sets a couple of weeks ago (more out of interest than being able to afford them) and they were all out of stock!

SophocIestheFox · 26/04/2020 08:43

Yup! What I wouldn’t give to be lying sweating under a nice heavy bar right now. I’ve been working on my press up variations, and using resistance bands and single leg work, but it’s just not the same.

YogaFaker · 26/04/2020 19:25

I’m too lazy to do it on my own. I need the inspiration and structure of the gym. And the mercilessness of my PT.

One of mine reopened three weeks ago; it's been great to get back to the proper heavy lifting Smile The others (larger gyms) are still closed for now though.

WonderWomaaan · 16/10/2020 04:02

My gym isn't reopening which is crap as I loved it there. I've now been stalling finding another one and the weeks are flying by. I was an absolute machine last year but tweaked my back trying to DL 160kg just before lockdown and by the time I felt fully recovered everything was shut.

MissMarplesGlove · 17/10/2020 15:57

Wow! 160kg! The most I can do at the mo is 75kg. Failed at 82 the other day. It's quite slow getting back into it.
