Have you ever seen a ghost?

I had a really weird experience

Last year we booked a weekend away in a cottage in Devon.

I fell asleep on the sofa and woke up to an old lady in a green cardigan going over to the fire place.
Then she just disappeared.
I was really spooked but husband said I must have been half dreaming.

The owner of the cottage was in the local pub one night and came over and asked how we were getting on. My husband made a joke saying my wife thought she saw a ghost.
He looked at me and said ‘ah you seen Polly, the lady with the green cardigan’
He said he’d also seen her and another guest had mentioned it!
He told us she was a previous owner.

Ive got no other explanation other than Polly being a ghost.

Have you ever seen one?

Yes - I saw a man walk past my bedroom door a few years back. Initially I assumed it was DP but he was out walking the dogs at the time.

Normally I see them in a less tangible form - usually as a mist passing by but I'm more clairsentient than clairvoyant.

SmugglersHaunt · 25/02/2024 19:18

Go on “Uncanny”!

snowisfinethanks · 25/02/2024 19:23

I was really frightened
I ran upstairs so fast and wouldn’t be in a room on my own the entire weekend.
I even asked my husband to come upstairs with me when I went to the loo 🤦🏻‍♀️

Yep. An old lady appeared in the foyer of some OAP’s flats while I was waiting for my elderly friend to answer her door. I was only about 4 at the time and I remember it like it was yesterday.

Then just before Christmas this year I saw the figure of a man in my hallway. I thought it was DH then I realised he was too short and DH was in the garden anyway.

It runs in the family. My brother’s seen a few as well.

Itscatsallthewaydown · 25/02/2024 19:58

I don’t believe in them (!) but I’ve seen at least two in my lifetime, one of which was only a few weeks ago.

Jeannie88 · 25/02/2024 20:03

Not personally, possibly once but it was a bit of waking up and seeing a disappearing so not sure. However a few people who I totally trust have told me stories and I believe them. To authenticate, some said they could half a person and that was because the buildings used to be lower down and so an image would show in original form. X

Symphony830 · 26/02/2024 11:06

Yep.

I’ve lived in my house for several decades. Always felt a little creeped out downstairs but thought this was due to having a long, narrow corridor, but never experienced anything that couldn’t be explained away - pipes, old wiring, creeking floorboard etc…

Twenty years ago in broad daylight on an overcast day, I saw a mysterious crystal orb (very twinkly- not a solid ball as per usual. Special!!) floating down the corridor. and disappearing through a wall. Every once in a while I Google to see if anyone reports of similar experience … but they never have.

My mum came to stay with us for several months and told me that my son was enquiring ‘Who is the man that walks down the corridor that isn’t Grandad or X my then boyfriend?’ This happened several times. My mum assured me that no one else had been in the house.

A few months ago, I set off down my stairs and a man was walking up the stairs. I shouted out thinking it was an intruder because he was solid - not a whisp - and he just faded away and I continued walking down the stairs and left the house.

I can’t explain these incidents away. I’ve never knowingly had an hallucinations; not on any medications and have no sleep issues. They were both during the day after I’d been awake and up for several hours.

Just curious - if you don’t believe in them, what do you think it was that you saw?
I don’t think I’ve ever seen any, but I love threads like this!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 03/03/2024 10:49

Not seen ghosts per se but as @Symphony830 says I used to see orbs with DB, I must’ve been 5 or 6 and him 2 years younger. We used to play with them! Then there was also a very strong smell of flowers when we didn’t have them, it’d come and go in the house. A few years later parents went into loft and discovered Victorian drawings in colour of flowers which were apparently from when young women lived there, they looked into the previous occupiers.

I actually stayed at a hotel/inn, The Mermaid in Rye last year with then boyfriend and the room we were in was supposed to be haunted. I heard and saw nothing and boyfriend who’s not woo said he saw something but thought it was more a shadow figure. And was in early hours of morning.

Whattheduck · 03/03/2024 12:04

Yes my dd would have been about 4 and she was in bed fast asleep one Xmas Eve.
I went into her room to check on her and to put her stocking in her room as I turned round a young girl was sitting at the end of my dd’s bed and dd was still asleep.
I have since seen her again my dh was in his office which is next to the kitchen I was washing up and turned to pick up some pots and saw a figure walk into the office
after I’d washed up I went in and said where’s dd is she ok he said she’s upstairs isn’t she I said I saw her come in to the office but he said she hadn’t and I checked and she was upstairs playing.
Also my bil and family were visiting and they walked from the lounge into the hall to go my bil was last to leave and he came into the hall as white as a sheet and said he felt someone push him out the door.

LovelyJubbles · 03/03/2024 20:11

I’ve had two and this might be a bit a bit outing but anyway 😉

First was when I was working as a care home assistant when I was 17 before uni in a home with dementia patients. Had one lady that insisted that her bed sheets kept being pulled by a little Victorian boy in braces each night. When I would go into her room she would complain he had been at it again and was disturbing her and he was a naughty boy. Anyway, sadly weeks after this she died and I remember us staff putting it down to the dementia.

Within a few days as is normal for a care home another lady comes in from hospital and takes her room. Within a day she too is complaining about a little boy in braces pulling on her bed sheets! It sent shivers down our spines as these women had never met in their entire lives explaining the exact same “Victorian boy”.

Next one was when I was at a sleepover when I was around 15, had a friend that was a bit woo and bonkers- but I liked her. She told me that sometimes when she walked past her nans old house (her Nan had been dead years) in the evening she sometimes saw her Nan in the kitchen window waving at her. I wanted to call her bluff so one night on a sleepover we sneak out and go to walking past her nans at 3am, spooking each other like kids do. Only once we got to the house there was an old woman there in the kitchen window as pale as anything just stood staring out! I can still remember she was an almost pale blue colour and my friend waved at her and she waved back! Que me legging it and my friend chasing after me saying it was ok! I was hysterical and got my mum to pick me up- fell out with my friend weeks later and still don’t know if I was being pranked or saw a ghost- my friend is /was convinced it was real though! And it was 3am!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 03/03/2024 20:13

Yes. I’m a rational personal, and won’t say anything in rl. But yes, I saw a ghost without question.

BuildingAShepherdsHut · 03/03/2024 20:17

Yes. We lived with a dog ghost for a while in a rented place. Both DH and i saw it. And felt it. It would nudge our leg in the kitchen hoping for scraps.

There was an old man ghost in our current house that has been seen (and smelled- he smoked) by me, and many various guests over the years though DH never saw or felt him. I have not seen him since my younger one was born 11 years ago though and we joke that having 2 small living boys in the house was too much for him.

I also see auras and always though it was normal and everyone did. Only white and golden glow auras but once a black aura from a random passerby which freaked me out big time. All the women on my father's side see auras and it was not until my grandmother was dying and we were in the room with her that the subject came up as we all saw golden auras around her.

I'm not afraid of ghosts and find it quite comforting. I am not religious though in any way.

Sunshineofyourlove · 03/03/2024 20:20

I don't believe in ghosts. But I saw something that I cannot explain as anything else. I often puzzle over it, years later.

Meshka · 03/03/2024 20:28

This is exactly the type of thread I love...not read through but will do just wanted to post my story...

Before DH and I were married were at his grandads house an old victorian terrace in the "Mill town" we live in, he wasn't close to his grandad but I am very close to my family and wanted to make the effort with his especially because I knew we would be married one day and I wanted to know more about his families history as he had never asked... example his grandad was 93 at the time and when I asked my now dh "did your grandad serve in the war" he didn't know!!

Anyway we went to see grandad and I wad asking lots of questions about him and his family his then deceased wife etc and he was overjoyed to be discussing his past and said he would go get a big box of old photos and left the room

There was a sudden whoosh of cold air and I could just feel there was someone else in the room by the corner and I said to dh someone has just come in and he dismissed what I said he's not "woo" at all and then I saw a glimpse of a woman rush past with her hair all done up in a short curled style and wearing a flowery dress and white cardigan with glasses it was blink and miss it....

He then came back with the photos and I just knew it was his wife- my DH grandmother who died when he was 14 in that house who I had seen will never forget it

I think she was always around waiting and watching over her husband for all those years and I would like to think I saw her because I was so open to hearing all about her and her family

SloaneStreetVandal · 05/03/2024 17:40

I never have. My husband, who is every inch a non believer, has. He saw a little boy in the window of the hospital I used to work in (the building is roughly 150 years old). He actually waved to the boy, thinking it was my colleague's grandson (it wasn't; the room in question was locked and empty).
My husband has experienced a few spooky/unexplainable (imo, in his they all have an explanation, even if he can't fathom what) things like that occur. I've suggested to him he must have a sixth sense/spooky gift of some sort, but he just laughs and won't humour me further on it! 😂 He genuinely has a knack of saying aloud exactly what I've been thinking. It happens frequently.

Verv · 07/03/2024 16:38

Yes, in an abandoned hospital.
There were two of us and we both said hello thinking it was a person before it disappeared.

Gilead · 22/05/2024 22:27

Not sure, but can’t think of any other explanation.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 22/05/2024 22:42

Gilead · 22/05/2024 22:27

Not sure, but can’t think of any other explanation.

And?! You can’t keep us hanging.

Champagnebar · 22/05/2024 22:46

I am not sure. I believe in the spirit world 100% though

MoonWoman69 · 22/05/2024 22:48

Several in my lifetime so far! And once you've explored every possible explanation and hit a blank, then you're left with the only possible answer! I was always brought up to believe anyway, I spent a lot of time with my great aunt, who was a clairvoyant. But it didn't stop me questioning what I saw when I was younger! Then I got used to it!

Gilead · 22/05/2024 23:28

Sorry, had to persuade the dog to go out!
okay, I’ve told this before.
Was on the broads for a week with Dh, ds and bf. Moored up teamwork broad, quiet, pretty area. That night it stormed, around five I decided to stop trying to sleep and made a cuppa. As I was doing so, I saw a man in a long coat/cloakget onto a small, slightly tatty looking boat, along with his dog. I just stood there and watched row off into the early morning mist. I was surprised because there wasn’t much mist. Thought the way they had disappeared was odd, they just seemed to fade away.
Some twenty years later I happened to be living in the area. I got hold of, or was given, a book of various ghost tales and local word out of handed knowledge . Anyway, the story of the Ranworth monk was in it!

PersilPower · 22/05/2024 23:41

myself and a colleague, sat side by side at a computer, just us in the office. I suddenly became aware of someone stood next to me, so close I could only see their tummy and chest. In the split second I turned my head, they vanished. It was a man in a suit shirt as far as I could tell. Turned to colleague and asked if she saw it. She confirmed she had.

never got my head around it all these years later. All I know was that it was no wispy apparition. Someone solid and three dimensional was next to me.
