Strange things going on in my new house

Hi all,

I've never believed in ghosts or spirits and to be honest think most people that do are a bit silly, however we recently moved into a new house and some weird things have been happening and it's freaking us out.

Last Saturday I was sitting on the sofa with my 6 month old and looked towards the living room door which was open so I could see the hallway. I will swear I'm until I'm blue in the face that I see a shadow of a figure go past the door. Initially of blew it off as nothing, however my partner 2 days later on Monday says something similar caught his eye the landing upstairs but he didn't think much of it either.

On Tuesday I was in the kitchen emptying the kids pack lunch boxes and my partners book which was on the middle of the dining room table some how ended up on the floor. It frightened the cr*p out of me. The alexa also switched itself on last night at 3am last night.

Today I got my daughter off to sleep in her buggy in the living room and started washing the dishes in the kitchen. Suddenly for no notable reason she started screaming at the top of her lungs for no reason as in she was in pain.

It doesn't stop there. Since we moved in 2 weeks ago our dog Ruby (lab) has been acting odd and keeps barking at the wall for no reason.

What are others thoughts on this?

Chuck the telly out and don't dig a swimming pool.

Tilllly · 04/10/2023 21:41

I'm not a believer myself but my church occasionally gets calls for an exorcism
Now we don't do that but the vicar will go round and perform a blessing and people seem to feel the house is peaceful after that

Bananalanacake · 04/10/2023 21:48

How old is the house? That would make me feel uncomfortable too.

menopausalmare · 04/10/2023 21:55

They're heeeerrrreeeeee😯

Dotcheck · 04/10/2023 21:56

Totally haunted.

Owlcat42 · 04/10/2023 21:57

In my house, which is in a rural area, the electricity randomly trips out for no reason, also there's an occasional mouse which means that sometimes something flitters past in my peripheral vision. Any possibility of either of those? Dogs can hear mice squeaking when we can't because the frequency is too high

Notcookie · 04/10/2023 22:02

Every church diocese has someone who is in charge of spiritual stuff like this (not called an exorcist but kind of similar). If you are worried approach your local vicar and ask for a blessing of the house or if they think something more is warranted. It happens a lot more than you think. As you can imagine, a lot of people don't want to talk about it publicly!

loveandthunder · 04/10/2023 22:02

Aw Jesus, so my best friend in the whole world who is intelligent and straight laced, atheist through and through developed a problem in her own house. It was just in the one bed room and the landing. It wasn't a nice feeling for any of them.

With nothing else to loose they got it blessed and a reiki healer I think, it went but they could never relax : no one liked being alone and sold up.

DyslexicPoster · 04/10/2023 22:03

Things like that happen I my house. My 15 year old regularly hears things. Two other kids have seen things. It happens then calms down again. I don't 100% belive but at the same time weird stuff happens. My house is built on chaple land but I can go back 100 years and no evidence of a graveyard. I'm literally backing onto a church 15m from my kitchen window.

I talk to my house. It's not threatening. Still freaks us out.

jellymaker · 04/10/2023 22:16

As previous poster said, get a priest to come. The spirit world is real.

Mummy220914 · 04/10/2023 22:46

It's 15 years old. It's just a small semi-detached

I spoke with my landlady tonight. She said the man that lived here before died in the house last year from a heart attack. Wish I hadn't asked now.😫

If you think about it a lot of houses have had someone die in them - a lot of people die at home.

Fernticket · 05/10/2023 13:49

Get a Priest in.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 10/10/2023 11:01

In my DP’s and my childhood house, there was often a strong floral smell - flowers rather than perfume. This was back when my DM rarely wore perfume. It came and went.

They did some research and found that adult sisters lived there (with family?) and then in the attic two lovely coloured drawings of flowers were found dating from Victorian times. They’re now hung in the hallway and floral scent gone.

If it were me, I’d get a priest round to cleanse/bless/tell whatever’s there to leave peacefully, but I wouldn’t be scared and go all Exorcist, doubtful what you’ve seen will do you harm.

DP’s house used to have a churchyard behind it and a church (sold off and built on now). As far as we know no graves there and no spooky feelings.

I would agree with this.

LilyLemonade · 10/10/2023 11:06

Fully agree with pp that your local CofE parish priest will be able to advise.

lilyblue5 · 10/10/2023 11:06

Also agree - get the priest to come. If nothing else it might put your mind at rest..
If it is something then hopefully will help them to move on peacefully..

Splitscreened · 10/10/2023 11:15

OP, you’re in a new, unfamiliar house. You’re still getting used to its quirks, and your child and dog are unsettled and getting used to a new environment.

I kept thinking someone had walked past our kitchen window when we first moved into this house (which I was on high alert for as we’d had some anti-social behaviour next door), but realised that it was just the way a shadow fell when the light was from a particular direction on a windy day — a tree shadow moving quickly that looked like movement in my peripheral vision. DH said the same. Now I don’t even notice it because I know what it is.

Also our ancient wiring meant that things did switch themselves on and off unpredictably (nothing since we rewired).

You’re now on high alert because it’s a new house and you got slightly unnerved, and have gone looking for a supernatural ‘explanation’. (I’ve had similar periods of ‘high alert’ when we’ve had mice, or problems with neighbour noise — you start registering every shadow in your peripheral vision, or anything that codes as ‘sound’.)

People die in houses all the time. I lived for a year with a student friend whose parents had died in a suicide pact in the house a couple of years earlier. It was desperately sad and difficult for him, but the house was a perfectly ordinary house.

Ollifer · 10/10/2023 11:29

Having someone die of a heart attack isn't that unusual op, surely a lot of houses have once had someone die in them? If it was a suicide or murder I may feel differently but it wouldn't bother me to know someone had died. My parents both died in my house, that's life.

vonryanstricycle · 10/10/2023 15:06

LilyLemonade · 10/10/2023 11:06

I would agree but would like to point out that any priest of any Christian denomination will be 'qualified' to bless a house.

As a side issue, I always find it ironic that we have so many threads on MN bashing Christianity, but whenever there is any hint of 'woooo' posters are advising getting a priest 🤔

Ttcjourney2022 · 15/12/2023 23:10

My old house was super haunted and continued to be for years on end. It was especially bad not long after we moved in, when I began researching, I read that it’s very common for things to happen soon after moving in as it ‘disrupts’ the spirit already living there. I 110% understand those people that don’t believe in life after death/spirits etc, however I have witnessed first hand several things as have my family members and my partner (who previous to these things happening would never believe it) it is real and it does exist! I wouldn’t be too worried, it’s very unsettling but I’m sure if the spirit was harmful, something would have happened by now :) x

Elphame · 16/12/2023 21:57

The previous owner of my house died here in the sitting room. It’s also a conversion of 4 x220 yr old cottages so she won’t have been the only one.

We had a huge amount of activity when we moved in and were renovating and decorating. It calmed down quite quickly once we had finished the work.

I have never felt threatened by any of it. It’s annoying and unsettling though especially when the dogs appear to be seeing something I can’t.

You can do a simple house blessing yourself .

Icantsleepagain · 22/12/2023 13:15

I experienced lots of things I cannot explain. I have relatives who have had experiences, so I know it is not just me.
The worst one is seeing things out the corner of your eye. You don't tell people because it sounds mad.
I once saw who I thought was DH sitting on the bed just staring forwards. I hurried into the bathroom putting the towels away and said omg what are you doing you scared the life out of me. Then i heard DH clunking about in the kitchen and talking. Nobody was sitting on the bed when I went in again. I've had all sorts happen, in many houses i've lived in. Breath on your face is an unpleasant one. The nicest one was something jumping onto the bed, which felt like my old cat. Only someone who has experienced it will understand what I mean.
