I haven't spoken to my MIL for a year because she doesn't like the way i (we, but her darling son can do no wrong) parent and she's openly criticised me for it.

It looks very much like recently something (someone) has come between you and a group of friends. The cards here are exactly the sort I'd expect to see if a friend had a new partner that no one liked, but she was very much loved up and oblivious to the undercurrents that seem obvious to everyone else. Because the rest of your cards dont seem related to this, I'm going to say that perhaps you are overinvested and might need to step back a little.
There is a lot of self contemplation advised here -there seems to be a project that you are involved with that perhaps you are overprotective of and that you would rather see implode than not have done your way. There is always a middle path, but you will need to learn to listen.
Being alone is not the same as being lonely, and that seems to be the message that the rest of the cards want to send you.

I have such a very long drawn out quandary with an ex....Wether to give up all hope or stick with it. Iv had weird things that I ‘just know’ and can’t explain it in real life. People think I’m crazy but it’s true.

your recent past shows someone with a dubious agenda. It looks like the two of you were chalk and cheese, which is why it might have worked for a while, but someone hasn't been truthful with the other. Their motives might have been called into question, or perhaps they are just secretive or playing their cards close to their chest. It could very well be because they have been hurt before. You are literally sleeping with one eye open at the moment.
Currently someone is coming and going from your life; popping up and then disappearing. It's frustrating as hell, but give them the benefit of the doubt; they really do have your best interests at heart.
You have a choice to make -is it to do with children? Something to do with home life one way or the other. The cards are advising that the choice you make is very carefully considered.

The cards show that something has happened recently to a good and loyal friend of yours. Has he had money taken away from him, or lost it through bad investments? The cards show a period of financial hardship, although one that might have been eased a little if they had taken the charity offered by friends and family. There is pride here, and an unwillingness to do things in any way other than the way he thinks is best. That situation is currently still a problem for you -it looks as if you are the one shouldering all the burden while they carry on their merry way with harebrained schemes and the idea that this next scheme will be the one that has the money rolling in.
To an extent, they are right. The future cards show a change in circumstance in the not too distant future. It shows them striking out on their own, but a successful outcome. You might just have to let them get on with it.

Both your recent past cards show you running away from something. The cards never show what, or why. But it looks like you have literally had to cut and run. The eight of cups turned up here, and that can often mean the end of a relationship, where you have almost had to leave with just the clothes on your back. Your central card is the ten of swords, which shows a very definite ending. There is no going back -whatever has happened cannot be changed. However, it is crossed by The World, which is one of the most positive cards there is. It shows that the world can be your oyster as long as you have faith in yourself. It confirms that the only way to look is forward.

There will still be upsets -the tower is in your future- but they can be controlled as long as you trust in yourself and don't give in to emotional outbursts. Your final card is the Ace of wands, which indicates a new start, travel, change, and testing yourself.
