I’m not sure what colour my new horse is 😊

Recently bought a beautiful Gypsy Cob. From photos and in her passport she’s described as Bay. However, her coat is actually a little creamy (don’t know if that’s the best way to describe it?) in colour and she has a black (very defined) dorsal stripe, black legs, mane and tail with cream feathers behind her knees (primitive markings). What are peoples thoughts?

Sounds dun to me? I had a bay NF cross and she was a totally different colour in the summer to the winter (not just mud!).

That looks like a Dun colour to me

ChrisPPancake · 15/01/2023 14:15

She's gorgeous 😍
I'd say she was bay from that pic.

Bbq1 · 15/01/2023 14:17

You're so lucky, she's lovely. I think she's dun though.

Alltheclouds · 15/01/2023 14:17

She's gorgeous is what she is 😍 She's halfway really, isn't she? Could be either. Be interesting to see what happens when she gets her summer coat.

Funnyfive · 15/01/2023 14:18

Definitely a dun - she’s gorgeous

Sorry, just seen in your post that she has the leg markings and dorsal stripe 🤦‍♀️

Epiphany2023 · 15/01/2023 14:24

Looks bay to me.

beachybed · 15/01/2023 14:25

Oh I say bay! I had a dun.

Gorgeous girl 😀

shockthemonkey · 15/01/2023 14:26

Gorgeous!

Dun

I love the dorsal stripes, it's an echo back to a very hardy primitive strain. Some duns even have faint zebra stripes on their canon bones... I just love this colour.

Yyfandes · 15/01/2023 14:27

She's either buckskin or bay dun. My money is on buckskin. Do you have a pic of her dorsal stripe? A dun must have one, and it will look clean and sharp. A buckskin may have one, but it will be blurry along the edges. Also, what colour were her parents? To be dun she must have a dun parent, to be buckskin she must have a parent with cream - palomino, buckskin or dilute black.

shockthemonkey · 15/01/2023 14:27

She'll go lighter in the summer, but the points will remain black

shockthemonkey · 15/01/2023 14:28

Dorsal stripe is black and very defined, says OP

Pixiedust1234 · 15/01/2023 14:28

I would say Dun as well. Bay is more a block colour rather that speckled/flecked, as well as being a darker brown.

legalseagull · 15/01/2023 14:45

Brown.

I'm not a horsey person Grin

atteatimeeverybodyagrees · 15/01/2023 14:47

Beautiful

ladygindiva · 15/01/2023 14:48

Yes dun. Like a pony I used to ride.

boboshmobo · 15/01/2023 14:51

Dun!!

flabbygoldfish · 15/01/2023 15:10

Bay, a bright bay. Don't duns have sort of dorsal strip down the centre of their back?

flabbygoldfish · 15/01/2023 15:10

Apologies, just seen the dorsal strip comment so yes a dun.

Brbreeze · 15/01/2023 15:15

Having had horses for 30 years I'm struggling to see how some people are seeing a bay! Dun to me.

MissVantaBlack · 15/01/2023 15:19

I think she's dun, but I've never seen one in that particular hue before. She's almost latte coloured! She's very pretty either way.

Whitney168 · 15/01/2023 15:29

Another forte for dun, and what a beautiful girl she is!
