I’m not sure what colour my new horse is 😊

Recently bought a beautiful Gypsy Cob. From photos and in her passport she’s described as Bay. However, her coat is actually a little creamy (don’t know if that’s the best way to describe it?) in colour and she has a black (very defined) dorsal stripe, black legs, mane and tail with cream feathers behind her knees (primitive markings). What are peoples thoughts?

Forte? Vote!!

Well deserved stealth boast op!! Gorgeous horse!

Hedgehog6 · 15/01/2023 16:47

Thanks @Eastereggsboxedupready honestly didn’t mean it as a boast 😆 But nice to see the compliments!

Thanks for all your rapid responses. Her breeder has got back to me and said she’s a red dun. Don’t know why is Bay on the passport

Beautiful!
I know some people break down the Dun colour further, I would have some she was a Bay Dun and not Red Dun as she is her black mane!

Floralnomad · 15/01/2023 16:58

I’d have also said a bay or brown dun not a red

HighlandCowbag · 15/01/2023 20:51

Definitely dun. She looks very like a highland x, she's absolutely gorgeous. Highlands have a lot of dun in them. Cracking mare!

blobby10 · 17/01/2023 12:25

Another vote for Dun! Does she have some Irish Draught in her? Will be interesting to see how much lighter she gets when her summer coat comes through! She does look lovely - hope you have lots of fun with her xx

Stepuptowardsinfinity · 17/01/2023 12:40

Absolutely a dun. The dorsal stripe is a give away.

Mollyplop999 · 17/01/2023 12:47

Agree with HighlandCowbag, she looks like she has Highland in her. She's stunning.

GuyFawkesDay · 17/01/2023 12:50

That is a dun. And a pretty one too. I reckon there's some highland in there too!

StuckWhereIAm · 18/01/2023 10:53

Looks exactly like my yellow dun highland - apart from the white stripe on her face. Are you sure she's not got a bit of hipo in her? My boy has the cream weathering down his legs, a pronounced dorsal stripe and obvious "zebra" markings on his legs - behind knees and insides of hocks - when he's in his summer coat. (She's lovely, whatever colour she is).

torwen · 18/01/2023 19:55

Similar to my ardenne, she does have a stripe though, she goes darker in the winter. Her passport says she is a bay, but I would say yours is a dun.

According to this, your lovely girl is a dun - www.horsebreedspictures.com/horse-colors/dun-horse

bravelittletiger · 19/01/2023 20:44

She's so pretty! Where did you get her from if you don't mind me asking?

Wbeezer · 19/01/2023 20:49

That shade of dun is very common in Highland Ponies, usually called red dun

Wbeezer · 19/01/2023 20:51

I see lots of posters got there before me.
I also think she looks Highlandish

Brown.

I'm not a horsey person Grin

Me neither - I just clicked on the link to see cute new horse pic!

She's very lovely. Makes me want to book horse riding lessons. Used to love it as a kid

RudsyFarmer · 19/01/2023 20:54

Look at her nose! ♥️🤗

Hedgehog6 · 19/01/2023 22:18

@bravelittletiger she was bred on the Lionheart stud in Warwickshire.

Thanks for the lovely posts! I think she’s gorgeous too 😁

Wow she is a beauty!
I would have thought with a dorsal stripe, primitive markings and bay colour (brown with black mane and tail!) she is surely a bay dun?
I learned recently that dun is a gene and not just a colour.
Hope you make each other very happy she really is lovely.

piedbeauty · 19/01/2023 22:34

Sun with black points. Lovely.

piedbeauty · 19/01/2023 22:34

Dun- bloody auto carrot. But a bright dun...

DoNotEatPickles · 19/01/2023 22:38

Dun, I had one who had a bit of a dapple like that. She’s gorgeous.
