Rugs for small ponies

We are looking to get my dd's loan pony a new rug as she has been saving up for the last couple of months. He is a Shetland pony but is 28 and does feel the cold a bit when it gets to deep horrible winter, at the moment he does live out but the yard are building him a stable with a door out into the arena he lives in so he has the option to come in or stay out if he wants to. So i am now wondering which would be the best rug to get him, a turnout rug or a stable rug ?

Asked the lady who owns the yard and she said it was a nightmare to find him a rug when they bought him the one he wears now, i wondered if there was anywhere that specialise in little ponies i looked at the rug he has and it is 4'0 so have done a bit of investigating and can't find many unless he wants a pink flowery one which will reduce his street cred :)

I have to keep on reminding my dd that he is a boy lol

Well if he's going in and out then a turnout would be the best bet, but are you sure he needs one? Ours is 30 and lives out but her coat is so amazingly efficient she is never cold as long as she can stand out of the wind, plus she hates wearing rugs.
Obviously if you are going to clip him or want to make sure he is clean and dry when your dd wants to ride (thick coats and mud not fun!) then I quite understand that.
There's a 4'0 one here in blue. Smile

Actually I prefer this one. Lots of choice on that site though.

Ruggles do shetland rugs and weatherbeeta do some rugs some enough.

We use Rhino Pony Wugs. Not sure if they get quite that small though. Mark Todd also does little ones.

No, Im wrong. Ive just found them starting at 3'9.

Turnout rug for sure. Stable rugs waste of money IMO as turnout rug will do the same job. Perfectly safe to use in a stable if need be.

thanks for all the advice we ended up going to robinsons and got him a weatherbetta foal rug and it fits him perfectly and took him a total of 3 mins to get it grubby, he looks nice and cosey warm now
