You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement for school staff to let off steam.

Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

I would be another saying no on the principle of it. Just why are spouses required? Do the women bring their Hs? Are there any senior women because they should be shouting about this! I'm genuinely aghast such an industry exists in 2021. Hopefully the rest of his business isn't so outdated.

I'm hoping I have everything for DS to start school.

MsAwesomeDragon · 16/08/2021 19:27

I can't imagine taking time off work to support DH in work networking/socialising. I don't think my department would help out with something like that, although we do help each other out with covering special school things like kids nativities/sports days or weddings/funerals. But we would all begrudge it if it became a regular thing to support a spouse's career. How senior is your DH? I'd he senior enough that he can say these things should be for individuals rather than couples, then nobody would bring their spouse (I bet there aren't any husbands turning up every time, are there?)

DreamingofBrie · 16/08/2021 20:52

It isn't a regular thing - this is the 3rd time I've been asked in maybe 3 years. Most of the work socials (the local ones such as Christmas or leaving dos are no-partners). I guess we're only talking about the "special occasion" dos, where there are only a handful attending. Of the three I've only gone to one and he didn't/won't attend the other two either (one was abroad and neither of us wanted to go, tbh!).

So I suppose in order to effect change he could attend one without me, next time.

DreamingofBrie · 16/08/2021 20:54

The one that we did attend was a "thank you" from his boss.

noblegiraffe · 16/08/2021 21:01

How different his job is to teaching!

JanglyBeads · 16/08/2021 21:41

Is his company British or another nationality - if you can say?

PhysicsCat · 16/08/2021 22:04

I used to work in science research before teaching. My DH did accompany me to a science conference in the states (aka cheap holiday as my flights were paid for). He got a little upset with the ‘spouses’ program when he was the only bloke and they mostly seemed to be going to shopping malls.

Calls for ventilation in schools. The article says no money has been provided for ventilation since January, when did we ever get money for ventilation????

AuntLydiasNewHairdo · 17/08/2021 12:39

Never, afaik.

noblegiraffe · 17/08/2021 13:14

Don't think we got money for anything?

After the mad thread last night, now deleted ( DanglingMod would be pleased to know I busy correcting people's grammar) it's probably worth keeping an eye on what Us4Them are up to. They might be quiet on here, but they're working away in the background to ensure that kids aren't vaccinated.

Stuff like considering making a TikTok about how it's cool to be anti-vax to appeal directly to the Gillick Competent and how they're also discussing how to stop secondary kids being given the flu jab are pretty shocking. twitter.com/karamballes/status/1427570311881449488?s=21

JanglyBeads · 17/08/2021 16:04

It’s so pathetic.

noblegiraffe · 17/08/2021 18:34

Good luck everybody:

Piggywaspushed · 17/08/2021 18:48

Shit. That is literally a 'do nothing' approach. It looks like ventilation isn't even the norm.

And looking at the my colleague is sick thread . nothing has changed about aversion to testing unless you have the original 3 symptoms , and even then only if you are virtually coughing your lungs up...

TheHoneyBadger · 17/08/2021 19:22

It is quite bizarre that they're not at all worried about community spread, cev children or families, hospital numbers etc but the idea that a child might feel a bit chilly in a classroom is horrifying and mustn't be allowed.

JanglyBeads · 17/08/2021 19:48

Updates guidance, nothing we eon’t Know already though I think

Sad but true. Is that the stamp of U4T??
noblegiraffe · 17/08/2021 19:52

I wish they were as concerned about thermal comfort in the summer and sort out air con or something.

motherrunner · 17/08/2021 19:55

God yes, I would rather be freezing than sweat my arse off.
motherrunner · 17/08/2021 19:55

DanglingMod · 17/08/2021 21:45

Good work on the SPAG correction, Noble Wink

Yes, I think the guidance is virtually the same as when we broke up. Open windows and clean light switches twice a day.

TheHoneyBadger · 17/08/2021 21:55

No we're not meant to open the windows if it will cause thermal discomfort now. Talking to a perimenopausal woman about thermal discomfort is brave!

DanglingMod · 17/08/2021 22:04

Definitely.

Well, even for menopausal me, the 9 degrees my classroom hovered at for several months was too cold. For the kids, it was fucking freezing. They were blue.

noblegiraffe · 17/08/2021 23:02

No, Dangling, you only clean the light switches as a one-off if 10% of your come down with covid. Same for opening windows and only then if it's not cold.

It's basically going back to pre-covid. Except with rampant covid.

BustopherPonsonbyJones · 18/08/2021 00:19

We’ll be excellent rat labs for seeing if or when Covid vaccines start to fail. The lack of concern over my health has made me very bitter though. I’m much harder and less sympathetic than I was 18 months ago.
