You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement for school staff to let off steam.

Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

We are still waiting advice on chairs and masks but keep the windows open. You don’t have to upload LFT results during the holidays.Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask.

They're never on my working days. They'd be outraged and think I was ridiculous if I suggested they should pay me for them. I am going to factor them into my directed time budget that I'm going to do though as it should bring down the amount of meetings I have to go to at least.

noblegiraffe · 10/07/2021 20:38

parents evenings were pro rata, but normal after school meetings were "attend if you work that day". Any union bods able to confirm/refute?

That wouldn't be fair on part timers who work every day who would end up going over their directed time attending every meeting compared to a part timer who didn't work on the main meeting day, for example.

You should attend parents evenings for year groups that you teach, because if you don't you'd have to phone parents to make up for it which would be a ballache, but technically you can't be required to work on a non-work day.

MrsHerculePoirot · 10/07/2021 20:45

Nothing is pro-rata separately eg you don’t do INSET pro rata and meetings pro rata etc. You have the pro rata directed time hours and how the school chooses to direct you in that time is up to them. So if you are 0.4 then your directed time is 0.4 x 1265 = 506 hours.

You cannot be expected to work on a day you don’t usually work but you can be directed to attend after school meetings on the days you do work, even you don’t work the whole day.

If you choose to come in for parents evenings for example
on your days off then you are entitled to claim pay for it.

This idea that you have to attend 2 INSET days out of 5 if 0.4 or whatever is bollocks. It is up to your school to ensure you receive appropriate CPD.

MrsHerculePoirot · 10/07/2021 20:48

If you work for example 0.4 across all five days then you can be expected to attend any meetings on any days however your total directed hours are still 506 (in this example) so that is where you agree with your school which meetings etc you will attend.

Monkeytennis97 · 10/07/2021 21:03

I've been part time for 21 years across two schools. In both schools no one has ever asked me which meetings/insets I am doing. I just choose them and do them to fit in with my 0.4 or 0.6 or whatever it is that year.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 10/07/2021 21:04

@TheHoneyBadger

I hate to say it but Rule but something about chickens and counting springs to mind there.... touch wood quick.
I do the duty rota!
FlagsFiend · 10/07/2021 21:20

I'm not expected to do parents evening on my non-working days. If I'm the only teacher for the class I usually get a couple of parents fill in the slip or email me asking me to contact them, but definitely not the whole class. The school I'm at are very big in phoning home for any issues though, so most parents I'd need to speak to I'm already in regular contact with. Usually it is just a couple of the hard-working students whose parents want reassurance that their child is doing the right things who want an update.

TheHoneyBadger · 10/07/2021 21:25

And once the staff isolations start Rule?

JanFebAnyMonth · 10/07/2021 21:29

Ah thanks for that @noblegiraffe, - I certainly can’t contribute anything to the current discussion here!

MsAwesomeDragon · 10/07/2021 21:29

Our pt staff generally come in for parents evenings on non working days, but they are paid for it as a matter of course. I don't think it would be a problem if they couldn't do one on a non working day, but I've not heard of anyone saying no.

TheHoneyBadger · 10/07/2021 21:29

Well it seems I'm getting a pretty raw deal doesn't it.

I don't mind doing parent's evenings IF they are taken off of my directed time. I think I will do my own spreadsheet and submit it to everyone and after I've taken off teaching, ppa, inset, buffer time, duties etc I will see what is left and what that translates to for availability for meetings. I'd actually rather do parents evenings than dick around waiting for my department to stop fannying about and actually start a bloody meeting letting alone finish or sit through whole school cpd meetings teaching me to suck eggs that actually I tried sucking 15 years ago and they didn't work then so why would I suck them again in some instances.

I'm going to have a go at doing this and then maybe get one of the maths republicans to check it over for me Grin Then whenever anyone tries to dump extra work on me I can pull out my spreadsheet and say, now, what would like me to take off in order to put this on? The target on my back will be flashing neon by the end of September.

Mistressiggi · 10/07/2021 21:37

We (won't be relevant to most of you but by way of contrast) expect part time staff to do inservice prorata, even if they fall on a non-working day. Same for parents evening but if this leads to you working too much something (never sure what) is meant to be done. You could do a shorter parents evening, perhaps. All meetings are pro rata. You don't have to attend any on a non-working day (but do management remember this? Smile) Bank holidays are also pro rata.

TheHoneyBadger · 10/07/2021 21:39

This year was the first time I have experienced a bank holiday falling in term time I think. I was very excited.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 10/07/2021 21:48

@TheHoneyBadger

And once the staff isolations start Rule?
What? Unpossible. Covid will be gone on 20th July. Tut...
TheHoneyBadger · 10/07/2021 22:19

Grin I try really hard NOT to think about autumn.

It would be a lot easier to do that 30m underwater in the red sea Angry

JanFebAnyMonth · 10/07/2021 22:35

30m??? Wow! (No zilch about diving)

JanFebAnyMonth · 10/07/2021 22:35

And sometimes zilch about homonyms

TheHoneyBadger · 10/07/2021 22:39

Well don't tell anyone but I've actually dived to 85m.

TheHoneyBadger · 10/07/2021 22:39

Shall I tell you another glamorous ex boyfriend story? It fits here but I feel I'll be mocked Grin

Mistressiggi · 10/07/2021 23:01

Yes please Smile

MrsHamlet · 10/07/2021 23:11

Please....

Sureitwillbegrand · 10/07/2021 23:21

Oh a bedtime story... yes please

JanFebAnyMonth · 10/07/2021 23:31

Yes yes yes!

Hmm, maybe that has other connotations.

Medra · 11/07/2021 00:04

I’ve not attended parents evening on my job-working days. They said they wouldn’t pay me, so I didn’t attend.
