You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement for school staff to let off steam.

Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask. Finally, upload your covid test results twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Well it used to be all fields round these parts Jan and my dad walked about 10 miles a day to go to school and back so maybe whilst not northerners we’re not soft southerners either?

It’s about 7 miles round the reservoir and a couple of miles to and from it so at least 11 miles. We took all day at it and took food and rested when we liked so no shepherding involved and we didn’t stay together or near teachers. Think it only stopped quite recently, possibly when our catchment changed and we got whiny townies and estate kids who were horrified by the outdoors Grin

In theory you could have just sloped off and as long as you were seen at the end of the day no one would have noticed.

JanFebAnyMonth · 05/06/2021 12:12

I must admit when I first heard about our school walk I was a bit incredulous too

We do run a minibus round to pick up any genuinely injured which sometimes becomes some having ‘issues’ with the walking

motherrunner · 05/06/2021 12:13

There was a thread the the other day where a poster was asking whether a 15 minute walk to school was too long for a 7 year old.

Fuck me.

I saw that. Shock

Even after virtually everyone said, nope completely normal for a kid to walk that distance. The parent was still wibbling about it.

MsAwesomeDragon · 05/06/2021 12:33

mistress that isn't too far from me at all. Well, it's a couple of hours in the car, but a doable day trip. Dd and I come up to the zoo most years on the last day of our summer holiday, it's become the traditional "don't want to go back to school" day out.

Shock

My 4yo does 4 miles regularly, probably every 2 weeks. We're not afraid of a walk! We have a student whose dad owns a taxi firm. She gets driven the 300 yards to school and back by whoever is passing.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 05/06/2021 12:52

Yeah, I was open mouthed at that thread.

Can some children do it without whining, probably not. But unless there’s a disability, then you should probably be a bit worried if a 7 year old can’t walk for 15minutes.

JanFebAnyMonth · 05/06/2021 12:54

And people wonder why we have an obesity crisis.

JanFebAnyMonth · 05/06/2021 12:55

She says. As she contemplated why she hasn’t quite got round to the daily hour’s walk she’d planned in half term....

noblegiraffe · 05/06/2021 13:00

You need an Apple Watch. Mine buzzes every hour to tell me to get off my arse and has a little firework display if I meet my daily activity goal. Definitely improved my activity levels. I'm a sucker for little firework displays, and now I've got a streak I refuse to break.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 05/06/2021 13:07

My 6 year old has been up Mam Tor and Pen Y Fan. Before covid, so she was 4 or 5.

When she was 4 and 3 months we made her walk up a mountain in the Alps, from 1100m - 1800m. Only one emergency wild poo on the way up too.

If you can zone out the whinging, it's fine. Big 'if' on some days though.

Beachhuts90 · 05/06/2021 13:09

Our school is doing a walking and running challenge for all of summer term. To be honest it's been a godsend to have the option of taking them out on the field for some exercise whenever they're a bit fidgety. We tend to go out for 15-20 minutes at a time but some of them could go a lot longer if we let them.

When I was in school, in the US, we had PE 3x a week. Even at secondary it would be every other day. I really think PE 1x per week like at my school isn't enough.

Medra · 05/06/2021 13:15

We used to do the school walk. It involved loads of moaning from kids.

DanglingMod · 05/06/2021 13:20

I'd love to take the kids outside more this coming half term.

Tried it a couple of weeks ago with a better than averagely behaved year 7 group. Oh my god. Even without the road traffic noise which was a pain in itself, it just wasn't a good idea. So much titting about; scared of ants and spiders and ladybirds, trying to edge closer to "boyfriends" or "girlfriends..." Needless to say, no other class got to try it.

Piggywaspushed · 05/06/2021 13:34

Someone just put on our local FB page that they encountered two teens having sex under play equipment in a toddlers playground....

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 05/06/2021 13:58

Shock Although only about the toddlers playground bit.

All this walking talk has encouraged me to get off my arse and put my walking boots on this afternoon. Just need to decide where to go.

MsAwesomeDragon · 05/06/2021 13:59

Ewwww, that's not nice. I think it's fairly common though. I know I've found a condom or two in the parks when my DCs were younger.
Piggywaspushed · 05/06/2021 14:09

But in broad daylight???

TheHoneyBadger · 05/06/2021 14:16

I've been to the gym, done an hour on the treadmill, walked the dog and there's still twats4irrationaltwattishness waffling shite on your thread noble.

The sun is shining here and my brave putting my legs out in the sun and having a glass of cold fizz. I should be marking or cleaning but whatever.

TheHoneyBadger · 05/06/2021 14:17

The teenage equivalent of a wild poo?

JanFebAnyMonth · 05/06/2021 14:20

That is pretty Shock and IMO they should be reported.... but let’s not start a thread!

Mistressiggi · 05/06/2021 14:23

My dc don't walk anywhere without moaning. Ds' last two sentences to me have been "can you make me a sandwich?" and "you're so annoying, you're not a nice person". Can't be arsed with them today. Hoping can read a book in the garden and ignore them now.

Piggywaspushed · 05/06/2021 14:27

Oh that would be a fun thread though! Imagine the excuses those mummys would come up with!

I blame the teachers. Even at half term. They should be in schools.

(We did once find two kids having sex at school. Bleugh)

TheHoneyBadger · 05/06/2021 14:28

Ds's have been, 'For fuck's sake' and 'Why???' Mistressiggi so you're doing better than me. I'm trying to get him to get on with sorting his room out. I don't recommend living with a Bob!

TheHoneyBadger · 05/06/2021 14:29

At school??
