First in tops up the gin supplies and turns on the tea urn.

@namechangedyetagain and @ScarletLake I hope you both enjoy today with the children Flowers INSET day always wears me out and leaves me feeling overwhelmed. Once I get the kids in, I'm fine!

Monday is INSET for me -feel like one of a very few not back yet Confused

Getting start of term jitters properly now though Blush

I noticed the news articles have started along the lines of 'teachers no more at risk', 'schools need to be normal' etc.

Saw a clip of Gavin Williamson earlier say schools need to be the pre pandemic experience for pupils. Apparently, the government do have contingency plans but he refused to say what they were. I'm guessing that's because they actually don't have a clue Hmm

TheHoneyBadger · 02/09/2021 14:32

INSET is exhausting imo. Information overload, some people who don't get that reading 100 power point slides at a hall full of people is not an effective use of time or means of teaching anyone anything, important questions and pressing issues ignored etc.

I'm done in.

Gav apparently now wants 12+ given the option of being jabbed which is the first thing he’s ever said that I’ve agreed with!

The comments on the DM article are entertaining!!

twinkletoesimnot · 02/09/2021 16:22

All going to be normal at ours - only thing we are keeping is hand washing.

Have been told if we get it then supply will be called in. ( if they can get it 🙄)

We are to 'try to be encouraging and positive,' which goes without saying - it's not the kids fault.

Feeling so much trepidation.

A parent has written to chair of govs begging to keep all Covid measures in place too, which is interesting. At least some of them 'get it.'

Do people still do this in schools? Blimey. What’s wrong with them? Why are they such shit communicators?

This. Exactly this.

I had a great morning, as soon as the children were through the door I was in my element. This afternoon wasn't so great (across both classes). Started to get really bubbly - with no TA to support.

I have a couple that I'm really worried about, one who just doesn't do anything (ehcp request in, but no help until at least next year if at all) and others who are well known safeguarding wise but no access to system.

I think I'm feeling a bit in the dark and a bit in the deep end and rather frustrated at the minute.

This is also ok isn't it. I'm really tired through lack of sleep and worried that I might not cut it. I think everything will feel better once i have a timetable for next week and know what I'm doing.

Hope everyone else's day was good!

Frlrlrubert · 02/09/2021 20:15

First inset today, head went on (almost twice his allotted time) about making sure we know our pupils, PP, etc.

I don't have my data package logins yet, so... I know nothing. Hopefully will get sorted tomorrow so I can get up to speed!

New school is less organised than I expected from what I saw at interview/induction/visits.

Thankfully we have another inset tomorrow and then no teaching Monday (2 year groups in tutor all day, but not the year groups I tutor) so fingers firmly crossed I've got time to get on top of things.

WhenSheWasBad · 02/09/2021 20:57

Try not to worry too much. I think everything is always a bit unknown in the first few days.
Obviously you need to flag any safeguarding concerns straight away. Hopefully everything will few more settled soon.

Were we at the same training day, Honey? It is hard to believe that the SLT member delivering ours was ever in the classroom and capable of holding the attention of small children! I endured a four hour marathon of death by PowerPoint today AngrySad
HarrietDVane · 02/09/2021 21:19

Well done for surviving Name! It will get easier as your confidence grows, I promise.

13luckyblackcats · 02/09/2021 21:36

I had IT issues (many), half my furniture isn't arriving until the end of the month (!), but had a lovely first day as a teacher. Hoping tomorrow goes as smoothly and that I can get on top of next week over the weekend.

TheHoneyBadger · 02/09/2021 21:38

Even on my PGCE it used to kill me that we were supposed to do 5 part lessons, never talk to long, use a variety of teaching methods, remember you can only take in so much info at a time etc yet the lecturers would think nothing of reading a powerpoint at us for 2 hours Hmm Take your own medicine ffs.

BOOOOOM!!!

I had my first one excluded by 9.25am.

I think that's a win.

Omg!!! That's definitely a record!!
DollyMixtureLulus · 02/09/2021 21:43

Excluded by 9.25! Shock

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 02/09/2021 21:47

Definitely my record. To be fair, they had left the classroom by 8.55, so the exclusion-level activity didn't happen on my actual watch.

MrsHamlet · 02/09/2021 21:50

Impressive work Rule

This. If any teacher trotted out lessons like this, questions would be asked.
MrsHamlet · 02/09/2021 22:11

Bob's little brother is coming. Apparently he's asked for their relationship to be kept secret 😂

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 02/09/2021 22:11

Also, check out the age group impact of 'something' Reading festival on the cases locally. Right to limit assemblies for a couple of weeks I think.

JanglyBeads · 02/09/2021 22:11

Gold goes to rule on Day One!

From a report on the brekfast interview this morning - Gav said that he wouldn’t expect to see many outdoor lessons or assemblies particularly in autumn and winter.

Also, Yvonne Doyle, medical director of PHE, helpfully explained the testing through September:

“That will pick up any hidden late-summer viruses.”

Which is actually quite reasonable because they won’t be hidden by October!

SquashedFlyBiscuits · 02/09/2021 22:35

Wow @RuleWithAWoodenFoot that is quite something.

My child came back on cloud 9 after his first day in Year 7. Another child (clearly SEND) had hit him a few times but even that hadn't dented his happiness. Had to send my first email in to the Y7 staff though.

We were given quite a lot of time to do our own thing on inset today. Result!
