First in tops up the gin supplies and turns on the tea urn.

I wasn't surprised really. There has been loads of stuff on MN about how medics were putting down covid when it wasn't covid and so on, and how admission numbers include people who go in for non covid reasons but test positive on arrival - so no point mentioning it elsewhere.

More people on ventilators in ICU now than there were when the November lockdown was called. So much for 'casedemic'. Or whatever they keep shouting.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 29/08/2021 18:48

Oh and hats off to anyone still responding to my thread in health about government honesty. One dingbat in there seems not to sleep, I've had to give it up.

cantkeepawayforever · 29/08/2021 18:54

I have decided that Watapalava + NannyandJohn are the same person, posting extreme views at opposite ends of the spectrum to foment discord while throwing everyone off the scent....

JanglyBeads · 29/08/2021 19:00

Interesting theory cant!

13luckyblackcats · 29/08/2021 19:24

@RuleWithAWoodenFoot ugh were they doing them on the train? Thanks for the reminder though, need to start mine tonight.

Piggywaspushed · 29/08/2021 19:27

Ready for a plonker?

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 29/08/2021 19:34

ugh were they doing them on the train?

Yes - they were also sewing wristbands on where they'd shared them amongst friends, so clearly all a bit haphazard. Teenager shiz.

Iamnotthe1 · 29/08/2021 19:36

If he's a real teacher then speaking like that publically could easily land him in hot water. I'd be very surprised if he was.

If he does work in a school and has somehow managed to have six months off at any point in the last 18 months then he's couldn't possibly be a full time subject teacher, more likely a cover supervisor or purely pastoral non-teaching role.

Piggywaspushed · 29/08/2021 19:38

Oh, but he's a personal friend of the head, don't you know!?

Iamnotthe1 · 29/08/2021 19:41

Not just a personal friend but setting school wide Covid policy based on his uninformed, unqualified opinions.

Piggywaspushed · 29/08/2021 19:44

You know those people who think teachers should stay out of the staffroom ? Well, he may just be employed for that very purpose...

ChloeDecker · 29/08/2021 19:53

I feel sorry for his colleagues who clearly had to work extra hard to pick up his slack, if he really is an actual teacher!

Tailrunner · 29/08/2021 23:04

We know that a lot of our sixth formers were at Leeds Festival this weekend. There are 10 days before they start back at school and have their first LFT which I think means that they should be showing symptoms if they are going to but we have been debating whether there will be a few more positive tests as a result. Last year a lot of them didn’t test at home if they had been to a party etc so I’m not convinced they’ll do any before they start back.
JanglyBeads · 29/08/2021 23:49

So... they could all be going to festivals catching possibly new variants or at least delta, and bringing to back to spread in sixth forms and colleges.

Let’s really hope that they come for the LFTs and that they’re infectious enough for the LFTs to show if positive....

I don’t suppose the government knew this would be what happened and therefore planned the inschool testing accordingly?

TheHoneyBadger · 30/08/2021 00:15

Re looking after children with covid, surely it would be the same as looking after a child that has chickenpox or similar? Wouldn’t whatever rules apply to you at your school be applied? I might be missing something…?

If a child had chicken pox you could get someone else to look after them who'd already had chicken pox for example whereas if a child has covid they are legally isolating and no one is immune to it, even if vaccinated so there are no other childcare solutions. In the chicken pox case your school probably allows you one or two paid days parental leave to allow you to arrange childcare, in the covid scenario there is no alternate childcare (particularly if you are a lone parent) and grandparents are an absolute no no.

Outside of covid if your employers business closed you'd be made unemployed and seek unemployment benefits, during covid we have furlough paid for by the government. It's not normal circumstances and accommodations have been made reflecting that - that should, imo, include accommodations around parents (mostly mothers).

They're not being legally allowed to send their children to a childcare setting, they're legally obliged to isolate their child and legally obliged not to leave a small child home alone therefore they shouldn't be able to be sacked or disciplined or left without pay due to following the law.

It is different isn't it? Is it just me thinking this is something that needs to be accommodated for? It would seem very wrong if some had been on furlough for over a year and yet women who couldn't work from home could lose their jobs or 10 days pay because they can't leave an isolating 3yo home alone?

And yes - we're only on page 12 - how did I see page 40 previously? Ignore other thread. I'll post a link to this one on the other one as I see someone has already posted there.

Mistressiggi · 30/08/2021 06:34

There's no one who could look after my dc if he had to be at home - I know you do get emergency nannies (whose pay might be more than me missing a day's pay!) but would they be confident enough to come into a house with Covid? I'm not sure.

TheHoneyBadger · 30/08/2021 06:53

No one here either. Luckily for me ds is older so if only mildly unwell it’s manageable to leave him alone but if he was really poorly with it that wouldn’t be ok.

There were mums in similar situations previously, weren’t there, remember reading threads about them?

Hercisback · 30/08/2021 07:55

I hadn't even considered sick leave/child isolating with covid scenario. Last year 4yo had to isolate a lot and me and DH tag teamed to cover with a combination of time off, WFH and online lessons. This was all paid. You're right that chicken pox would be 1-2 days to source childcare but you can't do that with covid.

(Gav’s words of wisdom come below their article.)

TLDR: it’s teens’ and parents’ responsibility to (help) keep Covid away

Piggywaspushed · 30/08/2021 08:08

But the guidelines throw caution to the wind, Gav!!

Just ridiculous. How dare he?

Well, he dares because they've been lying to us for months and years and no one gives a shit.

Never have I felt so grateful for my own dear colleagues! He’d be a staffroom-clearer, for sure. The self-confidence (arrogance) and smugness is deeply repellent. What was he doing for six months when the rest of us were working?
