You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask

@namechangedyetagain

I had one of those days too, which is why I'm awake at this hour. Cancelled pe as behaviour was so bad I couldn't trust them to be safe. Had a 'I'm so sad and disappointed' moan at them.

Feel like the crappiest student ever.

You're really not, and I hope it reassures you that we all have those days Brew.

All year groups being given behaviour assemblies this week. I've had enough of this half term and counting the days until we break up.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 20/05/2021 08:44

I've had enough of this half term and counting the days until we break up.

Me too. I started at 26 days though. Haha.

motherrunner · 20/05/2021 09:04

Just found out that 6 teachers have handed in their notice (luckily none in my dept). 2 have jobs to move onto but rest taking early retirement. They’ve had enough.

LolaSmiles · 20/05/2021 09:06

That doesn't surprise me motherrunner.
I know a few people who've taken early retirement in recent years.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 20/05/2021 09:15

We've not had anyone hand their notice in yet, but I had one have a mini-meltdown yesterday, and another who I know is really struggling. Thing is, there is nothing I can do for these two. They've got as much support as we can give them. I'm meant to be doing monitoring stuff today, but there is no point as no one is going to be able to cope with the feedback unless it's 100% positive, which it won't be.

So instead I'm going to think about next year.

TheHoneyBadger · 20/05/2021 09:41

One of the good things about teaching science was being able to threaten to not do a practical Rule. Rowdy year 7s-lay it on thick about how there are meant to be some really fun practicals coming up but we won’t be able to do them unless you show me you can listen and follow instructions and behave well.

Day at home today but I have to go and see if my son’s phone is playing dead and can be repaired or if it’s genuinely caput. I should also be marking, cleaning, doing laundry, planning, putting together a wardrobe and generally sorting my shit out.

Anyone else’s life a shitstorm of not done things to do lately? Half term isn’t going to be long enough to sort it. I need a house elf.

Piggywaspushed · 20/05/2021 10:56

All that is happening now jan is some chit chat about how school pupils should not have to SI, although there does seem to be an appetite for vaccination of younger people. A lot of the focus is on not passing the virus to teachers, rather than each other, and family members. Children still aren't viewed as super spreaders!

Tell me, how exactly are there 50 cases in one school? If they hadn't isolated contacts, there'd be even more!

Piggywaspushed · 20/05/2021 11:00

We have just employed a 62 year old. First job. I mean, how, how would anyone have energy at 62 to start teaching !??

They might be disappointed if they think it is a gentle easement into retirement whilst 'putting something back into society'.

JanFebAnyMonth · 20/05/2021 11:10

Yes piggy I was quite surprised by the number of people calling for an end to isolating school contacts!

borntobequiet · 20/05/2021 11:12

We have just employed a 62 year old

I retired from secondary at 60 because I knew carrying on would affect my health in the long run. I was lucky enough to find a part time position that was easy for me because of years of experience...I genuinely can’t imagine starting teaching at 62, even if very fit and healthy both emotionally and physically. I also can’t imagine tolerating any bullshit. I could call it out at school because I’d been there longer than almost anyone and frightened people, also got consistently excellent results.

Piggywaspushed · 20/05/2021 11:41

A couple of people on there who often stray on tot he more aggressive corona boards mind jan and parents of primary DCs which affects their outlook, quite naturally. Also seem to live in very unaffected areas.

Piggywaspushed · 20/05/2021 12:11

Pinched form another thread where the reaction was 'No shit, Sherlock'!

Once more I cry ..... but I thought cases in schools were reflections of rates in the community??

Piggywaspushed · 20/05/2021 16:42

Two more cases at DS's school. Whole sociology class except him and two girls now SI!!

Piggywaspushed · 20/05/2021 16:42

Oh, well jan , y'know .. incompetence.

WhenSheWasBad · 20/05/2021 17:14

All the staff look completely done in.

Especially the HoDs. Some are getting tetchy and vocal about the recent shocking behaviour from kids.
Others appeared to have vanished. They are in but seem to be off in an office snowed under by a load of paperwork and responsibility.

I can’t wait for Year 11 to go. So many have just given up and switched off it’s really rather disheartening.

DanglingMod · 20/05/2021 17:27

It literally sounds like we all work in the same school with the sheer exhaustion , especially for teachers of exam groups and even more particularly, HoDs, and the impossibly poor behaviour.

Since I know we don't, I guess this is just the status quo in schools right now.

DreamingofBrie · 20/05/2021 17:33

I used to (half) joke that I could do with a wife Hmm. Hope ds's phone is fixable, Honey.

Ds off sick with upset stomach today, I was glad to have a genuine reason to keep him off school. His work was provided electronically so he did some of that alongside me whilst I got on with some of tomorrow's work. Things still unresolved at school, but dh persevering.

Frlrlrubert · 20/05/2021 17:42

Behaviour is so bad at the moment. We've had a year 7 sent home today after just refusing to do anything, and then refusing to go in the isolation room.

The cover supervisor was telling me yesterday she asked for a pupil removing and their HoY just spoke to them and sent them back in to continue running riot. Totally undermining.

I let year 11 watch a film (they've finished assessments in my subject) and the boys started throwing tissue all over so we had to stop that too.

TheHoneyBadger · 20/05/2021 17:53

No not fixable apparently. They think it’s at the board level rather than a broken part. Haven’t told him yet.

JanFebAnyMonth · 20/05/2021 17:57

Courage, 💪🏾, honey ......

noblegiraffe · 20/05/2021 18:10

There was some suggestion of removing bubbles on '21st June' today and all I could think was 'dear God I want to see Y7 try their shit in the corridors with the older years around'.

Windy and wet today. The worst combo for behaviour.

MsAwesomeDragon · 20/05/2021 18:14

Windy and wet here today as well. The kids were ok though, no big behaviour issues. That might be partly because I had 3 lessons of assessments though, and they don't tend to misbehave in assessments (apart from the deliberate sniffing)

Medra · 20/05/2021 18:21

Definitely sounds like our place.
JanFebAnyMonth · 20/05/2021 18:27

Yes I’m worried, there seems to she a general enlarging / removing/ messing with bubbles in schools, and then we’ve got detected cases of the Indian variant doubling every few days nationally.....

I had the nicest outside duty with Y8 today that have had since the autumn (only do it once a fortnight though).

DollyMixtureLulus · 20/05/2021 18:30

We had a wet play and a wet lunch. They were wild.

Everyone is so, so tired. 5 weeks until the summer holidays.

Could be a lot worse though. No parents' evening and no show.
