You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask

@RuleWithAWoodenFoot

I used to have a little shop bell on my desk, it was amazing. A child broke it a few years ago, but you've reminded me to buy another one. This class needs something to cut through the endless chat.
I've got a little shop bell, that's just for that reason. Saves my voice and I use it all the time with the 'talk partner' tell your partner, you've got 30 seconds etc etc as well.

I got a fab yellow one with a smiley face on it from Amazon.

DH is a numpty! He was diagnosed T2 diabetic at the beginning of 2020 and has worked hard to lose 8 stone and reverse it. At his last blood test he doesn't even register as at risk of T2 never mind having it. BUT it is a diagnosis that stays on his record now.

So the gp called him up to offer to book him in for his group 6 appt. He queried with the poor receptionist why they were offering it to him and why I, with my asthma, don't qualify for it. Then he turned them down and asked to be invited in his age-category group so he can get it at the same time I do. The receptionist confirmed when I'd get it and told him I'm group 9, which is wrong - I'm not 50 yet! The receptionist told him that his turning it down wouldn't mean my getting it any earlier. Which he obv already knows.
Twit. Teen dd has given him a hard time for refusing it. God help him if he catches it at work and she gets to say 'I told you so'.

Took Mum for her 2nd jab tonight, so at least she's on the way to being as protected as possible.

noblegiraffe · 16/03/2021 23:49

How annoying of your DH, DrMaddie, I’d be very frustrated.

How are you?

You've reminded me my Y6 teacher used to have a great big boulder on her desk and she used to pick it up and drop it on her desk if we were making too much noise!
borntobequiet · 17/03/2021 05:40

The other mums in the maternity ward thought I was a teacher because I wore glasses. This was in 1980, ten years before I even thought of teacher training. I didn’t even have A levels or a degree at that time, thanks to a misspent youth.

SansaSnark · 17/03/2021 06:09

Remote interview this afternoon, then parents evening tomorrow, then an in person interview on Friday (possibly). I feel like I've overstretched myself this week, because I already feel exhausted too.

I'm not great at teaching interviews, but the thought of not having a job for September is obviously very stressful, and all the signs from my current school are that there won't be a job for me.

HarrietDVane · 17/03/2021 06:39

Good luck @SansaSnark - hope the interview goes well.

Beachhuts90 · 17/03/2021 06:40

😂 over the boulder!

Monkeytennis97 · 17/03/2021 06:43

@CallmeHendricks

You're not considered old on here until you admit to owning exercise video tapes. Blush
What about a Felicity Kendall LP (I think it was called Shape Up and Dance)...
MrsHamlet · 17/03/2021 06:47

I want a boulder. And a sack truck on which to lug it from room to room.

namechangedyetagain · 17/03/2021 06:51

Good luck Sansa

I'm absolutely terrified of going in today after yesterday. I'm hoping that as Dep Head will be in they'll all be on best behaviour. 🤞

Right. Shower. Caffeine. Big girl pants.

Iamnotthe1 · 17/03/2021 06:59

Dreaming

😂 I've done similar with a pile of books being dropped onto the floor, followed by a "Thank you," when they suddenly go silent.

motherrunner · 17/03/2021 07:00

Morning all.

I passed out in my Yr 11 class yesterday. So much for no side effects to the vaccine. Started having aches in P1 by P3 I was sweating and then out. I didn’t go home though. Had my form covered (we have form in middle of day) but had Yr 10 and 13 in the afternoon so felt I needed to teach them. Got home and stayed in bed with 2 hot water bottles. Woken up without the aches or chills but feel completely drained. Hopefully it does last the 24-48 hours time frame. Still VERY grateful to our our local PHE and my Head.

(And for anyone 50 and over my friend who is 51 had her NHS invite yesterday for our area)

DrMadelineMaxwell · 17/03/2021 07:09

I'm doing ok Noble , thanks. It's hard and sad but we are getting through it.

One nice thing in all this, my sister was booked to be married at a local venue next Easter. She had paid £500 deposit and had not taken out wedding insurance. All the paperwork specifies that payments are non refundable and non transferable. But when she phoned to cancel they told her they are refunding her deposit under the circumstances. Some kindness goes a long way.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 17/03/2021 07:10

Oh my goodness, Mother... that's not good. Take care.

motherrunner · 17/03/2021 07:14

@DrMadelineMaxwell 💐 Some people reading that may think ‘well of course they should do that’ but when my DH’s father died an infamous Irish airline didn’t refund his flight tickets.

Thinking if you and your sister at this terrible time. Hope you’re managing to keep each other strong.

MsAwesomeDragon · 17/03/2021 07:18

Wow mother you are truly dedicated to stay at school after passing out!! I think I would have gone home to recover, even if it was exam classes that afternoon. I hope you feel better today Flowers

DrM Flowers for you and your family. I can't even imagine how sad this must be for you all. I'm glad your sister is getting her money back for the wedding that won't happen.

MsAwesomeDragon · 17/03/2021 07:20

name good luck with the observation. Keep yourself calm and controlled, and you'll do fine.

Good luck with the interview sansa. Fingers crossed for you 🤞🤞🤞

JanFebAnyMonth · 17/03/2021 08:28

Is it because am trying to access my NHS account for test result reporting on my phone that I keep getting Technical Error?? I even tried resetting my password this morning, as an experiment: nope, still can't access my account. Think I tried on laptop last week but will try again.

Was talking to a very law-abiding colleague about the testing yesterday, and she was slightly incredulous that I was trying to report Negative results....

TheHoneyBadger · 17/03/2021 08:46

Good luck name and mother I hope you're feeling better? You're setting the bar too high for the rest of us by carrying on teaching after passing out Wink

I am liking the idea of a bell or an air horn - secondary though whereas I notice most are talking about primary. My voice is hurting after a lesson with a noisy group. I only own a tiny bell and a singing bowl - singing bowl might intrigue them.

I had epic catch up sleep yesterday and last night and am now guzzling coffee before I go to work in about an hour.

Give up and just report to school Jan?

HerdyGerdy · 17/03/2021 08:52

Good luck name. You can do this.

Hope you’re both feeling better mother and drm.

I have a meeting this morning. Turns out I could have stayed home as it’s a zoom and come in after. Annoying.

HerdyGerdy · 17/03/2021 09:45

Thrilling. Passing on feedback in my meeting from another member of staff has just made me look an idiot. I really do loathe my school 🙄

JanFebAnyMonth · 17/03/2021 10:10

Oh dear herdy....

Best wishes to all suffering in various ways and /or faced with challenges over the next couple of days.

Honey, we haven't been told to report test results to school at all (apart from positive of course). Have others? I will definitely be mentioning my logging problems though.

Piggywaspushed · 17/03/2021 11:28

jan, this happened at DS's school. It's a Microsoft problem and is widespread. This seems to have been fixed now for them but people need to report it to fix it iyswim.

No side effects so far for me, touch wood.

Felt crap last night (like I had been hit over the head but that may be teaching!), nauseous and a tingly arm . Nothing as dramatic as mother.
