You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom and you will receive a detention

The plan for summer school, which was drawn up by Sir Kevan Collins, will see pupils enjoy sports and physical education in the morning before sitting down at the desk - due to fears that a lack of activity could affect students' mental health and academic success, the publication reports.

Ha ha obviously drawn up by some numpty who has never sat down with Y10 after lunch to do maths after a morning of PE, Drama and PSHE in the hall with well meaning but over-enthusiastic external providers who wind the kids up.

Where do they find these nincompoops?

motherrunner · 21/02/2021 11:28

I already have to be in work at 8am and stay until 4pm one day a week to supervise pupils, and every day only have a 20 minute break as all break times have to be supervised (although directed hours only covered this until Christmas so not sure what will happen when we go back).

Will I need to start teaching at 7am now? 😳

Some of the comments on that Mail article are just vile!

TheHoneyBadger · 21/02/2021 11:29

Yep I'll never forgive him for the, 'no ifs, no buts'. Our lives and health don't count ergo.

Mother is your subject available as a gcse option? Could it be the ones who have booked are the ones who are interested in continuing with studies and will want to know more about the course?

I’m not sure I’m brave enough to read them!
WhenSheWasBad · 21/02/2021 11:29

Urgh summer schools. The kids who need them the most won’t come in over summer.

God I feel sorry for headteachers. Have they had any kind of a break all year? Now they have to try and staff summer schools.

Yes it is @TheHoneyBadger.

This year we introduced A-level theatre studies and want to get it into the curriculum for GCSE too, why KS3 now have one lesson a fortnight to try and promote a live for the arts.

Didn’t think about that - going to ‘sell it’!

My sister is head of an infant school. She’s never had a more stressful year. :(

FrippEnos · 21/02/2021 12:04

@MrsHamlet

Nightingale schools????? WTF? Are we going to summoned in to build them in our free periods and clone ourselves to teach in them?
They will get the DT kids to build them, Art to paint them, Drama to organise the opening ceremony.

And hopefully U4T to staff them :)

chocolateisavegetable · 21/02/2021 12:06

The Geography kids could decide where to build them

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 21/02/2021 12:06

A couple of HTs I know are very much "see this through, then I'm off". Fortunate position of being close enough to retirement to not need the money, can pick up shifts in a supermarket to tick over until pension age.

Summer school is a bad idea. Unless they pay me ££££ I'm not doing it. The 'wrong' kids will come to it anyway.

FrippEnos · 21/02/2021 12:08

HercwasanEnemyofEducation

The article did say something about millions of pounds for it.

But as some posters have said on other threads, they would want it for the full 6 weeks so that they could go on their holidays for two weeks and dump their kids in school for the rest.

noblegiraffe · 21/02/2021 12:13

That poll I did on AIBU suggested the vast majority of parents don't want their kids spending the summer in school.

What happened to the 'summer of play' suggestion from the child psychologists?

But that would actually take in to account the mental health and well being of children and we know how well those discussions go down.

And its just another group of professionals being ignored so that politicians can get votes from the masses.

Oh man, it was bad enough when my kids had forest school in the morning in autumn term. The non core subjects have to be in the afternoon or else we won't get through maths....
Appuskidu · 21/02/2021 12:26

I bet the government wants to spend that summer money on people on minimum wage, rather than on teachers on UPS though!

Timeturnerplease · 21/02/2021 12:32

Gah, I knew I shouldn’t have clicked on the Fail article. Toddler now asking ‘why you frown Mummy’ and poking my eyebrows.

They certainly won’t want to pay my M6 salary over the summer, and even then we can’t afford extra full time nursery so I won’t be doing it unless forced.

Also, why does no one care that kids will hate being shoved into classrooms during some of the only dry months we have all year in this country. It’ll only be the pushy, aiming for 11+/Oxbridge parents that go for it.

Piggywaspushed · 21/02/2021 12:34

All these summer schools, extended days, shorter hols etc will not affect private schools either to any great extent (many already ahve existing summer provision at least for fun stuff) so the division will be starker than it ever has been.

Appuskidu · 21/02/2021 12:35

Exactly. None of the kids who I think should be in now are being sent in-I can guarantee their parents wouldn’t send them over the summer.

One mum (who I know quite well now) told me that whilst she would like to send them in, if she doesn’t, she gets £15 a week supermarket voucher per child. She has 5 children at primary and is really struggling for money. I can see why she doesn’t send them.

JanFebAnyMonth · 21/02/2021 13:24

Gosh appu, that's a really good point (your example - unintended consequences etc)

I'd imagine she's not the only parent to make that (totally understandable, survival skills) decision for a possibly vulnerable child.

Timeturnerplease · 21/02/2021 13:29

I’d also love to see minimum wage cover staff (or whoever they draft in) get a bunch of six year olds to calm down enough to do any kind of core subject learning after a morning of PE etc.

I have taught in KS1. Trust me, it won’t work.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 21/02/2021 13:32

What most would benefit from is a 'normal' summer being able to see friends and visit places. I wouldn't send my child in for this unless I needed childcare.

If there was a magic way of catching up kids, we'd already be doing it.

Piggywaspushed · 21/02/2021 13:37

Oh I left the staffroom. Stupid stupid stupid.

Mistressiggi · 21/02/2021 13:43

After weeks of snow it is actually 11 degrees today and quite bright - I am heading out of the house! To somewhere pretty locally where I can read my book (will double check Scottish exercise rules - am sure we are allowed on benches!) Also (tmi) seem to have developed some thrush-like nastiness, waiting on Amazon to drop me something to help. Good I don't have to be in school with this, but really cross to be spending the whole weekend in such discomfort.
Piggy you should know what's out there by now! Stay in and have some cocoa.

motherrunner · 21/02/2021 14:06

@Piggywaspushed

Oh I left the staffroom. Stupid stupid stupid.
I’ve hidden in my kitchen and started batch cooking (and drinking wine) to stop me venturing on other boards.
