I'll pop a link in the old one so you know where to find safe haven. I have tried to clear out some space by getting rid of the ohp and vcr trolley and gin is hidden behind the sick sand bucket.

Students parents - presuming you have more than one underachiever....

JanFebAnyMonth · 15/04/2021 21:31

Parents evening is one I always puzzle over. Does it belong to them or is ‘parents’ being turned into an adjective? Originally the former I suspect, but it’s morphed into the latter.

MrsHerculePoirot · 15/04/2021 21:57

@TheHoneyBadger my Y11 class have massively suffered and the gap widened for them. They are the group who we’ve really worked with to get them working well, engaged and motivated in lessons, with majority of them completing hwk to some extent. However many didn’t have any tech at all beyond a phone, nowhere to work, little support from parents. In school we can convince them education is important, talk to them about what they want to do and how they need to work to get there. Once out of school they have none of that many of them.

First remote period we didn’t really do live lessons, just set work online. This time we taught to timetable - we had done our best to provide them with internet and devices where we could but if you don’t have anywhere suitable to work it’s hard. If you have to care for younger siblings whilst parents work it’s hard. If you have no-one who thinks school is worth it because they got no exams and they’re alright it’s hard.

So for me it’s heartbreaking as I know if I’d had them in school the full two years some of them would have smashed it. They haven’t got a hope now some of them.

Our top groups I’d say are more the one that worked remotely work in school and those that didn’t engage don't engage well in school but for me, probably same for our bottom groups but there are two classes in particular every year where we know we can make the difference and this cohort we just couldn’t do it.

HarrietDVane · 15/04/2021 21:59

As regards attainment gaps - there are certainly no surprises! Those who engaged with remote learning are pretty much where they should be academically (allowing for some inevitable gaps from lockdown 1 which we are working hard to cover). Those who didn't engage at all with remote learning are struggling - largely as they've lost stamina and their attention spans are shot.

The real gaps are in maturity in my year 3s. They have missed out on social development so they are doing a lot of tale-telling, and are less able to resolve their own minor squabbles at playtime. I'm not sure I'd describe that as a mental health crisis though.

The heating is back on in the Republic. The bursar finally paid the bill,

NI to start asking close contacts to get a PCR within 48 hrs, continue isolating for 10 days whatever the result.

And the TES obviously heard R4’s BMJ interview this morning like me, re ventilation and the consequences of govt not emphasising its importance:

Just dusting off the chairs and opening the windows as the latest Republic thread is full! Hopefully there are still some biscuits in the tin...

BigBobBoots · 30/04/2021 19:38

Here's a multi pack of monster munch to crack open, I mean, it is the start of a BH weekend!
Continuing the language topic, I hear a lot of 'Miss can I go toilet?' The answer is always a firm 'No'.

13luckyblackcats · 30/04/2021 19:51

Thanks @MsAwesomeDragon! Hope everyone has a lovely long weekend.

JanFebAnyMonth · 30/04/2021 19:56

bigbob are you East Mids?

You know that moment when you try and post and the “This thread has closed” message comes up, and for a second you think we’ve all finally been banned......?

Our meeting didn’t really get as far as my input, but I’ve been asked to put my ideas briefly on email to the SENCO and Catch Up lead. We’ll see.

Our admin person likes to rewrite people’s Newsletter contributions. And can be a little “difficult”.....

That's better than "I need a slash!" Which is what I get from a few of my year 10s. Hmm
BigBobBoots · 30/04/2021 20:10

I'm in London.
Slash? Ugh, definitely needs a Mumsnet TMI alert.

Mask wearing is going to cause long term harms apparently. I wonder who gave her that idea Hmm

noblegiraffe · 30/04/2021 20:27

Mum of 12 year old girl uses her as political pawn more like.

As if schools don't have enough on their plate at the moment. And the girl doesn't even have to wear a mask!

Re the grammar discussion on the previous thread, I'm aware I just started a sentence with And, and I'm not sure if that's as much of a no-no as it was made out to be school.

Also I reckon that if I name changed and tried to go incognito I'd be outed by my crap grammar.

JanFebAnyMonth · 30/04/2021 20:34

Oh that’s interesting bob, you’re in London, I thought missing out “to the)” as in go toilet, go town, go Wellingborough, was a Leicestershire Northamptonshire thing. I’d never heard it until moving here.

Piggywaspushed · 30/04/2021 20:34

Starting sentences with 'and' is definitely allowed. And I will brook no argument on this.

DanglingMod · 30/04/2021 20:41

Absolutely not, Noble.

I typed a long answer to Herc on the closed thread about why "I was sat" is incorrect. Basically, if you replace "sat" with "walked" or "worked" or "ate" you'll see why. It's the past continuous tense.

DanglingMod · 30/04/2021 20:42

The people I know who miss out "to the" are from Manchester.

No, we don't do that here, either.

And, yes, "yes" can absolutely start a sentence.

Piggywaspushed · 30/04/2021 20:44

I'm going toilet is v common in East Angular.

MrsHerculePoirot · 30/04/2021 21:03

Oo what’s happening?? I just posted stuff including a link to a U4T crowdfunder (not in their name though) and instead of posting that appeared... ☹️

JanFebAnyMonth · 30/04/2021 21:13

Think it must be a tech fault as they literally couldn’t have read it before that message appeared!

noblegiraffe · 30/04/2021 21:21

That happened on a previous thread to a post of piggy's, some sort of auto filter.
