You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom and you will receive a detention
@TheHoneyBadger the book 'Other People' s Children' by Lisa Delpit is great for insights on racial dynamics in the classroom. It's American and pretty old now but I still find it a goldmine. I'm so glad I read it when I was training as its really shaped me as a teacher. It addresses race dynamics rather than sex dynamics - it sounds like you're experiencing a combination of both which must be very tricky.
Thank you. I've found it on Amazon.

I'm still miles behind on the thread but didn't want to forget to say thanks

That's true, Appu, I've got a single friend with no children who lives alone. They really struggle in lockdown. It was particularly bad in the first one before they introduced support bubbles, but in this one, unlike the first one, their support bubble are still going to work so not around as much.

Appuskidu · 19/01/2021 12:12

Yes-it’s different and hard for everyone-it would be odd if it wasn’t.

Bet T4T are spitting feathers at this one!

explore-education-statistics.service.gov.uk/find-statistics/attendance-in-education-and-early-years-settings-during-the-coronavirus-covid-19-outbreak attendance data AND teacher absence data. Haven’t had time to look at it properly yet.

I've just booked flights for Egypt for a month in summer. Inspired by the discussion on here Wink

I have to sort my flat out and that long holiday is the one perk in a sea of stress and risk and being shouted at by kids whose mothers don't want to deal with them

TheHoneyBadger · 19/01/2021 12:27

My nephew (science grad) is thinking about teaching. I feel strangely proud.

MrsHamlet · 19/01/2021 12:31

Excellent honey
If you let us know the flight numbers we'll all come with you 😂

SansaSnark · 19/01/2021 12:53

Y11 were quite disruptive in live lessons yesterday and have apparently downloaded a section of a teacher talking and uploaded it to Instagram, inviting insulting comments.

I feel ill thinking about it. I also taught y11 yesterday and I'm really concerned the same could have happened to me.

TheHoneyBadger · 19/01/2021 12:56

I even paid for front of plane extra legroom and extra cabin bag seats. We haven't been away for ages and need something to look forward to. Direct flights with a uk airline so if the worst comes to worst I'll get all of the money back. Knew people who were screwed over by the second leg of flights not being cancelled this year.

I will not be available for summer sorry.

I set my out of office reply with my work hours listed yesterday and I am not turning my laptop on till tomorrow and anyone who emails me will know why. I'm not going as far as working to rule but I'm not being available to be taken the piss out of 5 days a week on a 0.4 contract anymore

noblegiraffe · 19/01/2021 12:56

Omg Sansa that’s awful. So awful. I hope they get the book thrown at them and aren’t allowed back in.

Was it you with the zoom bomber? Teacher tapp had 9% of teachers reporting a zoom bomber.

CallmeAngelina · 19/01/2021 12:59

@noblegiraffe

Hopefully they had someone on who knows what they are talking about to challenge her and her purpose was to be the voice of the uninformed who needed educating?
Haha.
TheHoneyBadger · 19/01/2021 13:00

My recorded lessons are screen only. No way am I putting my face out there and no one should be expected to.

Schools to open on a staggered regional basis according to world at 1 on radio 4.

TrashedWarrior · 19/01/2021 13:02

Doh, should read full thread, sorry!

cornercupboard · 19/01/2021 13:13

Jenny Harries still peddling the old line about teachers not being at any more risk than any other group.

TheHoneyBadger · 19/01/2021 13:14

Thank you noble. It feels so strange to just treat today like the weekend but it finally sunk in that my hod assuming I have to come to meetings outside my contracted time was exactly the same as me expecting her to be at a meeting on Sunday.

I'm ready to explain that if needs be.

Piggywaspushed · 19/01/2021 13:18

Reopening schools on a regional basis is bonkers given they wouldn't let Hull etc close!!

That is a bizarre plan for 'exams' too. But they think they ahve solved all that...

Appuskidu · 19/01/2021 13:18

@cornercupboard

Jenny Harries still peddling the old line about teachers not being at any more risk than any other group.
Yep-not at any more risk than any other group?! It’s like they’ve missed words out if the sentence.

Anyone would be at equal risk as teachers when put in a small unventilated room with groups of 30+ others not wearing masks for 6 hours!

Why is Handcock self isolating again? Why isn’t he using lateral flow tests at work every day and seeing how it goes?

Piggywaspushed · 19/01/2021 13:19

I actively hate Jenny Harries.

JanuaryChill · 19/01/2021 13:45

R4 just had big piece re schools: Robert Halfon saying how delighted he was to hear again, in the committee this morning, that schools do not spread infection and that there is no evidence that teachers are at greater risk.

No evidence because no one's bothered to look for it, I felt like shouting.

Then two sensible DepHs talking about lack of IT.

eitak22 · 19/01/2021 13:45

If I am told not to self isolate and to test I will refuse and will use Hancock and Boris as reason why I will.

So many of my friends are aware what schools are like and think its ridiculous were not protected. Bet our school will fully open, we only became tier 4 as all areas around us were.

SansaSnark · 19/01/2021 13:50

We had a teams bomber in a lesson I was assisting with yesterday. In my Y11 lesson, I didn't admit them because they were using a "guest" account, rather than a student one.

I thought we'd been given advice not to admit guests, as it could be anyone, but now I don't think we have been- must have been something I read on here!

I feel like we've been given really little support this time around with live lessons (when a lot of teachers are out of practice, or maybe didn't do any last summer)- and all the Y11 lessons yesterday had issues.

It's a real shame because it's literally about two students disrupting things for everyone else.

I hope whoever downloaded the video is banned from Teams permanently- but it wasn't a personal instagram account, so I'm not sure how easy it will be to discover the student running it.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 19/01/2021 14:34

Anyone else having MS teams issues?

JanuaryChill · 19/01/2021 14:35

That sort of thing is precisely the reason the unions and many others refused to do live lessons during first lockdown.

But then they crept in over the summer and autumn term, partly due to parental pressure and then of course, the DfE virtually mandated it. Was that in Sept, can't remember.

I'm still shocked that teachers have been so little training (none in a lot of cases) or guidance about using all of this completely new technology.
