You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom and you will receive a detention

so can they have written examples emailed to them instead

I've been snipping tool and screenshotting anything I do on the visualiser and posting as an image in the teams chat. Would work with graphics tab too. Saves emailing them individually.

That's what I was thinking I would do. I'll do my video and just take snapshots of the example once I've finished it. I might need to write a bit more so they can follow what I've done, but so be it. It's more for the parents to follow tbh, as these are nurture group kids who need an parental help to access anything I send. I'm not sure whether the problem is streaming or downloading, but they should be able to download from streams even if they can't stream it to watch straight away. In not sure if their parents are very tech capable though, so if they can't click a link to watch it they aren't sure how to work around it. I'll send the videos, screenshots of worked examples, and a worksheet, and that absolutely has to be enough for them.

I am really jealous of those of you who can do live lessons more often. I've had emails from several kids today saying their internet can't even handle watching my short (always less than 10 minutes, for this very reason) videos, so can they have written examples emailed to them instead. Just an extra layer of hassle to deal with on top of everything else.

I've done some really poor live lessons today though, at A-level Sad. So so tired and I can't string a sentence together so I'm saying things wrong then needing to correct myself. Can't bring myself to watch the recording. My recorded powerpoints are ,much better, but they take ages because I do so many retakes.

Just wanted to say thank you for all of the great suggestions here, which made my Y8 lesson run so much more smoothly today. It's a 45 minute lesson and I find that registering them, dealing with last lesson's feedback and going through the teaching bit often means they only have about 10 minutes to do the work, then 5 minutes to check answers. Today I:

  • Played them the Corbett Maths video, which took 5 minutes. Insisted on focus before I started
  • Asked them to type 1. "Not happy" 2. "Not sure but ok to have a go at the work " or 3. "Perfectly happy" into the chat section and managed to sift out the few 1s and 2s from the class.
  • Told the rest of the class to get on with it and put me on mute. Some chose to leave the lesson. Then I worked with the unhappy ones.
  • Told the class to return 5 min before the end.... They got about 20 minutes to have a go at some independent work

Having a quick look at their books, this seems a good way forward.

noblegiraffe · 13/01/2021 18:02

@MrsHerculePoirot

The setting mute thing totally stops them writing in chat but they can unmute and talk in live lesson (unless you shut that down to). THANK YOU!!!!!!
Oh that is amazing news. Will definitely be using that feature!

However the SLT member I spoke to (who is usually most sympathetic) said that we didn't need to have kids social distancing in school so it didn't matter

We're making an attempt at social distancing in primary. They sit one at a desk with their iPad or classwork, but they play together at playtime and lunchtime.

I am ok thanks for asking. What I hate about teaching is the onus to sort work out. Took me 40 mins last night to sort classes, times and rooms and what Oak link to be sent to kids at home and what work to be set for kids to do in the class and also a column for if there would be kids present in the lesson for cover purposes. Could have done it quicker on a normal day but hey ho this weeks is done.

Top tip: You type the three options in chat yourself and they like the one that applies. Although it can be dispiriting to see the likes on 'I have no idea what's going on' creeping up.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 13/01/2021 18:12

Oh we so need chat in the meeting turned back on.

That’s exactly what today’s Fail TB arrive is about today. Parents bitching about teachers teaching online saying that by the time they’ve faffed around registering, sorting out late people and people who don’t understand, there’s hardly any lesson left.

A bit like in many actual classrooms really!

Oooh that’s good idea. No often get them to type number out of five but that’s much easier to see 🤦‍♀️

To stop them using chat or posting. Go to the three dots in team, manage team and then where the kids are listed as members just tick the box for who you want to prevent posting (or all of them!).

I’ve also at the end of a lesson allowed them to choose an emoji to represent how they feel about eg multiplying fractions most do thumbs up but some are very creative with their emoji use. They are only at the end when I say though else I will turn off emojis for them 🤣🤣🤣

At the moment, we are making an attempt in that students sit one or two computers apart and we try to avoid very close contact (e.g. hugging) at break or lunch.

But if any more join the class/bubble, then there will be some children sat directly next to another child all day.

What do they suggest we do? Ignore those that don't understand?

And yes, late kids are common and massively disruptive in some of my lessons in school, too.

Piggywaspushed · 13/01/2021 18:31

I ahve not had any emojis in Classroom yet so I assume either my kids are very backward (possible veering to probable) or classroom doesn't allow it. No Like option either!

I Like the 1,2, 3 thing.

I wish Classroom had a thumbs up thing so they could just put a thumb up if they were fine.

Oh bollocks. Dry January is no more. Had an interesting day. Have loved being in class all week but today was er tricky and left me reaching for the fridge when I got home. Feel like I've failed badly. Not only at DJ but also at trying to be a teacher. Observation was good, but behaviour today was challenging.

They're little. They're going through a lot. I'm 3 months into learning how to be a teacher. It will get better. Won't it?

Piggywaspushed · 13/01/2021 19:36

Your tips are all so much more labour saving, straightforward and practical than the over complicated bilge I sat through this pm!

PumpkinPie2016 · 13/01/2021 19:50

@DreamingofBrie I felt my live lessons weren't great today as well Sad I teach them all live (secondary and 6th form), use forms quizzes/seneca/polls etc. Plus independent activities, modelling answers. Still don't feel they are good enough. I know some kids will be waiting for others to finish/some will be confused etc. And I can't see that.

A member of staff also complained at me today about how the an assessment has been done. SLT decided last week they were going ahead but that was midweek in a hellish week (for all), plus my KS3 co-ordinator is ill ao hasn't been able to do much (totally fine obviously) and I just didn't have time to change it while also getting used to live lessons, supporting the NQT and checking in/helping the rest of the faculty. Logically, I know it wasn't my fault, I have reflected on it to alter the next one and this person has form for complaining but it made me feel crap Sad

WhenSheWasBad · 13/01/2021 19:56

It will definitely get better name just start the dry Jan thing again tomorrow.

Rah
Popping in to rage.
Having been summoned in for a meeting today, I drove 50 mins. SIMS upgrade means it doesn't work so I have to use remote access. Got disturbed every free. 10 mins with boss. 5 mins with HT. Drive 50 mins home and now have to finish the marking I kept getting disturbed out of before tomorrow.
Rage!!!!!
