@NeurotreeWenceslas

Good point as the head are asking for details for why you feel this is unsafe.

This is an excellent opportunity to outline issues for many.

I will add here though that, when using Section 44, the empathsis is on the head to say why it is safe not on teachers to say why it isn't.

Heads have been told by their union that they cannot say this because, legally, they cannot prove it. Any head saying this would open themselves up to legal action.

@Cantaloupeisland

Amanda Spielman can fuck off. I am so fed up of schools being the sole responsibility for children's development. God forbid we actually look at some people's shit parenting. I have a friend who was at school during the Bosnian war in the 90s. He missed around two years of schooling and another two years was very patchy. He now has a good job and a successful life. I know this is just one case but I do think of him when people are bleating about a 'lost generation' as if working at home for two weeks is dooming kids forever!
I really dislike how she has gone along with making schools responsible for areas such as use of cutlery! Don’t even start me on nappies. I lead EYFS and have had a parent say that they didn’t worry about potty training as they knew we would sort it for them.... 😡
Iamnotthe1 · 03/01/2021 12:10

@Useruseruserusee

We've had similar in some of the schools I've taught in. One of my friends was in a meeting with parents when the dad turned around and said: "Why would I teach them to go to the toilet? You're the teacher, that's your job."

One of the schools I worked in was genuinely awful for it. Some children would turn up in Reception with no toilet training, poor motor skills (still being pushed in a pushchair to school) and significantly behind in speech development from not being spoken to or interacted with.

FlagsFiend · 03/01/2021 12:13

The whole nappies thing confuses me. Surely children who have learnt the skill of using a toilet shouldn't forget it if schools are closed - all houses have toilets and all people need to use them several times a day so you get lots of practise. Therefore once you have learnt the only reason you'd stop being able to is if you have a medical issue that stops the signals or doesn't give you enough time to get there...

Panickingpavlova · 03/01/2021 12:20

I really enjoyed listening to the union thing I thought they made things very clear.

The problem remains that the onus is on teachers but hopefully people are connected up and get answers from colleagues as to what they will do and get confidence in numbers.

It's a see saw thing isn't it, heads are let off the hook as it were because no one can guarantee school is safe with those 3 bodies backing that up.

PumpkinPie2016 · 03/01/2021 12:20

I don't get the regression in using the toilet either Hmm

The cutlery thing shouldn't happen but I can understand that in some cases it might. It shouldn't be the problem of schools though@TheHoneyBadger

I'm taking the Christmas decorations down todayXmas Sad

RigaBalsam · 03/01/2021 12:21

She is on sky now asking for Vaccines for teachers.

Then her usual guff. Interviewer is quite good.

RigaBalsam · 03/01/2021 12:24

Sorry meant Anne

chocolateisavegetable · 03/01/2021 12:29

Found you! I'll pop the duster round shall I? I bought biscuits - do help yourselves.

TheHoneyBadger · 03/01/2021 12:29

Oh good - I can take them down now? I shall do so soon and then get ds to climb into the attic to put them away IF he ever wakes up.

Regression on being able to get up in the morning I can understand. Regression on going to the toilet? Nope.

I totally get why we have EYFS and turning nurseries into supposed places of education etc but I can't help but feel that that was colluding and going along with the idea that parents have literally no responsibility in their child's socialisation and education.

In my family it's totally the norm that if you are helping a toddler put their coat on you are, without even realising it, also doing 'colours' and 'counting' and emphasising words like ON and SLEEVES and saying nonsense like where is your hand? Show me your hand? There it is! Let's put that in your sleeve! Well done. Now lets do up your buttons, ONE button, TWO buttons................. etc!

We're not massively privileged or some remote middle class echelon and I grew up in a council house but we get, seemingly intuitively, that babies and toddlers need adults to model and exaggerate and engage in their babies development. My nieces and nephews are the same on encountering a baby or young child. We all GET IT.

RigaBalsam · 03/01/2021 12:31

Looks like more and more councils are closing. Ours will not though as we have a Tory whipping boy.

TheHoneyBadger · 03/01/2021 12:32

Honestly seeing parents on here bemoaning that their 4 year olds - seriously 4YR OLDS! weren't getting more than a couple of twinkle sheets and a video of their teacher reading a book each day drove me insane!

Is it just me? On what planet can a parent be genuinely unaware of what a 4yo needs for development and unable to provide it in an international emergency and not be embarrassed to say so on the internet?

TheHoneyBadger · 03/01/2021 12:33

Excuse the rant and parent bashing. What happens in the broom cupboard stays in the broom cupboard remember!?

Don’t forget those with Nursery aged children and who were furloughed, were some of the loudest complainers, last lockdown.

It’s all been difficult for everyone. It’s just some are finding it easier to make allowances than others.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 03/01/2021 12:37

We're closing. Three KW and V groups.

I put in my letter because my Head asked me to. Helps her decision making.

My ex Tory-councillor dad told me to put it in. I mean, it must be serious!

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 03/01/2021 12:38

Just download this picture and put it up anytime anyone whinges about Twinkl sheets.

Birmingham City Council backs primary schools who don't want to reopen tomorrow

Kent joins growing number of councils calling for primary schools to remain closed

CallmeAngelina · 03/01/2021 12:43

But we're running out of time!!!
As of tomorrow, they'll mostly (unless inset) be in and sharing germs.

WhenSheWasBad · 03/01/2021 12:45

My kids have become lazy using their cutlery. The old threats of “you need good table manners or I can’t let you go round to your friends houses / can’t go out for meals” don’t work anymore.

Or it’s their teachers fault. It’s obviously not my fault as their parent, nothings ever parents fault.

FlagsFiend · 03/01/2021 12:46

Yeah, I totally get some things might regress if schools are closed - like using a pencil, as if you have a child who doesn't enjoy writing or colouring it might be difficult to encourage when not at school. But toileting, cutlery use and speech should all be practised at home every day.

SansaSnark · 03/01/2021 12:48

Also been on the NEU call, thought it was very good.

Our head has agreed to a remote inset tomorrow, and only staff on rota in next week.

He is asking for staff volunteers to supervise testing, though ¬¬

JanuaryChill · 03/01/2021 12:48

Absolutely @CallmeAngelina .

BBC writes:

In Scotland, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has asked for the Scottish Parliament to be recalled so she can make an "urgent statement"t"_, with her deputy John Swinney tweeting that ministers would meet "to consider the current advice in relation to schools and early learning".^

JanuaryChill · 03/01/2021 12:50

Good news for your place rule. Am so grateful am not primary any more.... also that I don't start my normal working week until 1215 on Tuesday.

So sorry to all who are primary.

TheHoneyBadger · 03/01/2021 12:51

Referring back to a poster saying SureStart had lots of middle class mums and kids - the thing is that is potentially actually a really good thing because (not saying middle class means getting it right) there's a degree of modelling and seeing what engaged parenting looks like (eg those mum's didn't NEED to be there they were choosing to be there because it might be enriching for their kids and help them deal with the stuck at home with a baby stuff).

We don't really want parents to be ghettoised into the services their class needs or only in a children's centre if their kids are at risk.

NeurotreeWenceslas · 03/01/2021 12:53

Wow that's great rule.

We've been asked to say if we are.

Can anyone do this or just unison and neu?
