You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give ‘The Every twat for Themselves mob’ the staffroom password as a number of them are operating in an alternative reality.

No DfE muppets allowed

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom, especially if yo

Can anyone actually explain the reason wing behind the extra 3 weeks? It seems ridiculous!

Keepdistance · 12/10/2020 16:18

I was thinking as hospitals fill up the figures they need are admissions by age not fatalities.
Because if eg 1/500 18yo needed oxygen and hospitals are full that is your chance of dying not the historical age deaths. As there are a couple of students in hospital arent there, so pointing out they would be dead no matter that with treatment they probably have a very good chance of survival.
I just think people see the chance of dying as fixed.
It also makes a number of conditions for children more serious because drs wont see them (easily at least) things like ear infections or chest infection

SaltyAndFresh · 12/10/2020 16:18

So teachers lose gained time and examiners lose holiday. FUCK OFF! I have a holiday booked the first week of the hols and if I'm able, I'm going!

Ahem, excuse my language.

Saucery · 12/10/2020 16:19

They have calculated that’s the average amount of time a child will miss because of self isolating? Which is bollocks, of course. DS is on 2 weeks already and it’s not even half term yet. Plus, I don’t really want his A levels marked by stand ins who are in a rush because the usual markers can’t or won’t do it.

Or just a vague sop. Look, we have given them EXTRA TIME to catch up!

MrsHamlet · 12/10/2020 16:19

Plucked from thin air I assume.

Piggywaspushed · 12/10/2020 16:22

But but but , each child in an A level or GCSE class won't have the SAME 3 weeks off!!

Appuskidu · 12/10/2020 16:24

Secondary colleagues who do exam marking-when do you normally start/finish? When do they advertise/hire for the marking?

Do you think take up for this will be low if it’s in the holidays?

Saucery · 12/10/2020 16:28

A mere detail to Gav and the DofE
MrsHamlet · 12/10/2020 16:28

They're advertising now! My first exam (which I just mark) is the penultimate week of summer 1 and we start in the holiday. The paper I lead is towards the end is the first week of summer 2. I normally mark until the end of July and then go away.
Contracts come in January for summer. We have 500000 candidates on my paper and I reckon we'll need new examiners this year.

SaltyAndFresh · 12/10/2020 17:16

I think I lead on the same paper as you MrsH.

We undeniably have in-school transmission now.

Augustbreeze · 12/10/2020 17:21

And who thinks they'll end up having to do something different, at least for schools in areas which end up in lockdown/closing?

MrsHamlet · 12/10/2020 17:22

The year of the bronzed gods, I was going to Hawaii on holiday. I can confirm that there were bronzed gods :)

Hercwasonaroll · 12/10/2020 17:24

Are the rumours true they're going to condense the time taken over the exam period, so students will have the same number of exams over fewer days?

That seems worse for them!

MrsHamlet · 12/10/2020 17:30

Who knows. But I can see they might have to in order to get them all done and marked in time. 3 weeks is neither here nor there as far as I can see. It makes up for nothing and just seems to me to cause problems at the assessment end.
I can see three things happening - experienced examiners will say no to marking in August so will either not take up contracts or will stop mid series. And we'll have to recruit newbies - which is fine if they have a clue. But there's been a trend towards letting anyone mark English cos anyone can mark English ... and they really really can't. And allocations will go up.

TheHoneyBadger · 12/10/2020 17:37

A shower of shit as ever then.

Shattered. Long after school meeting, quick meeting with head earlier in day basically saying don't bother applying for threshold as you won't get it, three removals in one day (a record for me) and on a brighter note a pretty positive restorative which I bothered to make time for with a year 10 I removed last week.

Off to the gym shortly then fully intend to collapse in a heap.

RigaBalsam · 12/10/2020 17:37

The year 11 that had covid in my class came back today.
She said her Dad made up her symptoms to get a test as her Mum was being paranoid and it came back positive. To her shock.

She said it was days after that she felt worse and showed me pics of her day by day looking ill.

She went out for break and came back in. She said others were shouting Rona and stay away covid breath. She didn't seem bothered and said they really need to grow up miss ,we are in year 11.

RigaBalsam · 12/10/2020 17:38

Also can't believe they are going forward with full exams but 3 weeks later. Nothing cut from Science.

MsAwesomeDragon · 12/10/2020 17:40

That poor girl Riga. I'm glad she didn't seem bothered, but I hope someone have the others a proper taking to.

RigaBalsam · 12/10/2020 17:54

It's ridiculous. She is quite sensible though and is a strong character. Others would have been in tears.

Did make me wonder though as she had none of the main symptoms the amount of cases we could be missing.

WhyNotMe40 · 12/10/2020 18:12

We seem to have a tummy bug doing the rounds in our school, despite all the hand washing and sanitising. Stomach pains mainly. Several from each class in year 7 and 8 and a few from year 9.
It makes you wonder if it's Covid or an actual tummy bug

phlebasconsidered · 12/10/2020 18:25

Well, the year 6 who had a tummy ache in my class last week is now positive and isolating. But we are still open, because mum said she didn't get it from school.......

She's not a doctor, by the way.

Augustbreeze · 12/10/2020 18:28

But how can that be? If they have had contact with her then the other children must isolate - how does what the mum say change any of that?
Danglingmod · 12/10/2020 18:40

So many stomach aches in year 7 and 8 at my school, too. I'm sure some of them are Covid. They can't all be anxiety.
