You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give ‘The Every twat for Themselves mob’ the staffroom password as a number of them are operating in an alternative reality.

No DfE muppets allowed

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom, especially if yo

We've splintered out staff (primary) into key stages and have separate meetings. But have kept to larger groups of, eg ks2, in the biggest classrooms we have so we can still see and speak to each other at least weekly.

starrynight19 · 04/10/2020 13:29

Just place marking , hope everyone is doing ok.

Keepdistance · 04/10/2020 13:46

Covid is causing viral pneumonia which they cant treat.
The pneumonia jab will protect against bacterial -some strains.
Though as you probably mean the jab may help if you have covid then get a bacterial infection after in a similar way to after flu.- I think some people have been on antibiotics after covid.

Like you say it is a good idea anyway as noone wanted a bacterial chest infection after flu etc this year!
Ive had a few as a teen mainly and probably a few minor ones ive managed to get away without the antibiotics with rest/olbas oil/honey and lemon and a lot of phlegm. (Not sure if it was worse as a teen as i was living at home and my mum smoked like a chimney)

Vit d can help against flu too.

I looked at the updated figures and my la went from down 48% to up 13%.

Stinker of a cold since Friday.

I am usually fine with the new school year. The irony is that I have be wearing a face covering and social distancing at school, and haven't been in anyone else's company (apart from family and they are all fine).

Mistressiggi · 04/10/2020 14:10

I've bought Bennet's new book but haven't read it yet. Lots of really normal sanctions like moving seats aren't allowed at the moment (well you could do it but would have to inform the HT for track and trace).
Still no cases in my school, assuming I would be told. I think I would be. Wondering about the rumblings about a circuit break in October. I would really struggle to have a week off (finally!) and have to spend it stuck in with the dc, with nothing open. I can see why they'd want to use October holidays but it does really turn it into a non-holiday doesn't it.

noblegiraffe · 04/10/2020 14:16

It's really hard finding things to do with the kids, the summer holiday was a bit of a struggle to find things we hadn't done a million times (nice parks, various zoos....). With poor weather it's even worse. It was pouring down yesterday so we decided to go to the local amusement arcade but couldn't even get in the door as it was full due to social distancing requirements.

Hercwasonaroll · 04/10/2020 14:23

Yes I'm finding weekends tricky with the kids when it's wet. Mine are only young but there's not much open and stuff that is open isn't suitable.

Cineworld closing is a loss. I feel so much for people employed in the arts. At least our jobs are secure.

noblegiraffe · 04/10/2020 14:50

One of my sixth formers works in a Vue. She said that on an entire Saturday they had maybe 30 people through the door. They were desperate for Wonder Woman, Black Widow etc to come out and now they've been delayed again I've no idea how they'll keep going.

Keepdistance · 04/10/2020 15:07

I think furlough would have made more sense as it's an example of people not feeling safe so not going.
And then as you say the delay of films and probably fewer being filmed now.
Maybe they should have tried to hang on as time goes on more will have had covid so may be comfortable being in cinemas. And more people maybe as weather is turning

minisoksmakehardwork · 04/10/2020 15:14

Behaviour definitely an issue in our school. The hub kids are running riot, the year 7's have attitude never seen before. The year 8's are likely showing the effects of having their first year in secondary interrupted. I think we're mostly putting it down to year bubbles, which means the normal pecking order of year 6's becoming the little fish hasn't really happened and the older kids aren't around to set the example either. It has also recently been realised that all the usual sanctions for the hub kids can't happen because it would mean mixing bubbles. So there is quite literally nowhere for them to go and their teachers are pulling their hair out.

On the other hand, school have provided me with a non-alcohol based sanitiser so my hands are no longer red raw and weeping!

Augustbreeze · 04/10/2020 15:57

The Scottish poster is back in force with lots of othering....

Saucery · 04/10/2020 16:03

Negative test result, hurrah! Doubt work will want me in with this cough and obvious flushed cheeks, but I’ll phone them tomorrow for a chat about it. I’m going to lounge around sniffing pathetically for the rest of the day rather than hide from a vague sense of existential terror.

CarrieBlue · 04/10/2020 16:04

Having heard Bennett speak I’m not a fan. He said nothing new about behaviour management and has sold that to lots of people as revolutionary.

noblegiraffe · 04/10/2020 16:10

He's been doing the behaviour management stuff since I started teaching back when he was on TES giving advice, but there are always NQTs who haven't heard it (especially those raised on Dix!).

noblegiraffe · 04/10/2020 16:12

Congrats on failing the covid test Saucery! Stay off if you're unwell. I bloody wish that front row Y10 who was ill on Tues had stayed off, I've now given it to DH who is being very grumpy with it.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 04/10/2020 16:14

Scottish poster is on a roll this week. She decided NHS staff should be put onto emergency contracts that mean they can be moved wherever in the country they’re most needed. Anyone refusing or quitting gets a lifetime ban on working in the nhs. She’ll probably be suggesting something similar about teaching soon.

Thought I might try a bit of shopping because the weather would put people off. Everyone else has had the same idea because there’s nothing else to do.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 04/10/2020 16:15

Hooray for negative test results!

Saucery · 04/10/2020 16:18

I laughed so much at NHS staff being whizzed around the country at the whim of the service demands.

Augustbreeze · 04/10/2020 16:36

Oh she said that on every post she could find when she first appeared.

I wonder what she's like f2f, but fervently hope I never have the pleasure.....

marplemead · 04/10/2020 16:47

Behaviour has always been an issue at my school, but I can't tell if it's actually any worse, or feels worse because we can't do most of the things we would normally do to manage it.

I'm still feeling run down from the cold I've had. I have my attendance review meeting this week, because, according to the school, I've had too much time off self-isolating/waiting for test result this month Hmm My union rep has been great, and will be there to support. But I'm just so angry that I even have to go to the meeting at all. At least if it stops other people being pulled in for meetings over the same thing, then it will be worth it.

I had a long chat with DH, and he thinks I should hand my notice in. I'm very tempted...

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 04/10/2020 16:57

WTF marplemead. How is the amount of time you’ve spent isolating/waiting for testing under your control?

Piggywaspushed · 04/10/2020 17:09

Just checked in with my local FB group. Apparently our GP is busy doing flu stuff for 2 and 3 year olds...

Piggywaspushed · 04/10/2020 17:09

marple that properly sucks.

Piggywaspushed · 04/10/2020 17:16

I had years and years of basically 100% attendance and then , some years ago now, my FIL dies, I had a car crash and then got flu. Then Xmas holidays and a few more days off totally unrecovered from said flu. Got hauled before the head. It's always part of a bigger picture of bullying, often of female staff.

TheHoneyBadger · 04/10/2020 17:18

Afternoon. After my wiped out mostly in bed day yesterday I've actually managed to get stuff done today. Marking and planning all morning followed by laundry and then went to the gym with my friend.

Swimming and going to the gym is keeping me sane this term. I never feel like going but always feel better for it.

Hope everyone managed to get some rest this weekend
