You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to beat us with then please do so elsewhere and not in the staffroom

In which case, there is no reason to appeal because you're going to get the CAG anyway. Unless your appeal is "my CAG is too high".
This makes no sense

MadameMinimes · 15/08/2020 17:10

In subjects with NEA that have had their grades taken down this will be very welcome news. Based on this we expect almost 30% of all our entries to go up on appeal on the grounds of mock/NEA alone. We are also appealing on the grounds of change in cohort and leadership but aren’t convinced these will be quite as straightforward despite having clear evidence of both.

MrsHamlet · 15/08/2020 17:14

I wonder if this might help our top end in English Language. We had some excellent NEAs along with some strong mock exams - but the grade boundaries issue worries me.

MadameMinimes · 15/08/2020 17:22

As long as you still have the marks can you not just apply the actual exam board boundaries against the marks to produce grades that will meet the criteria? You have to show that they were marked before the cut-off date but you wouldn’t be re-marking them just using the correct grade boundaries on the marks you already have.

MrsHamlet · 15/08/2020 17:26

Yes - the issue is that the students think they did better than they did!

MrsHamlet · 15/08/2020 17:31

I've emailed my HOD to see if we can appeal on the basis of the NEA. He doesn't check his email in the holidays though :(

ThrawnCow · 15/08/2020 17:41

You'd hope he might make an exception this year, MrsH Confused

MadameMinimes · 15/08/2020 17:43

Oh, I see. I’m planning to appeal on the NEA. NEA grades are almost always better than the mocks. Also... can anyone see if there’s anything that specifies that it has to be the most recent mock or if it’s just just a valid mock? I’ve read it and it doesn’t seem to say (or I’m not reading closely enough) but I don’t know if we’d have to choose one series for the whole cohort or can use the best of the two mocks we ran for each individual appeal.

Appuskidu · 15/08/2020 17:44

So, a valid mock is

MrsHamlet · 15/08/2020 17:47

@ThrawnCow you're hilarious!

Danglingmod · 15/08/2020 17:48

Does it help in scenario: mock = A, CAG = B, board adjusted grade = C (possible scenario). Student can then get CAG= B?

MadameMinimes · 15/08/2020 17:50

Sounds like it. You’d assume any teacher who predicted a kid lower than their mock must have had a pretty compelling reason to do so, though. I can’t see many teachers doing it. None of ours did across the whole sixth form. There may be some teacher predictions that were lower than NEA though, I haven’t checked yet, but that could be awkward.

MrsHamlet · 15/08/2020 17:50

@Appuskidu if the mock is higher than the Made up by Gav grade, you can appeal. If the mock is higher than the CAG, you get the CAG.
I keep getting "calculated grade" and CAG muddled

motherrunner · 15/08/2020 17:56

Just checking back in. My subject was pretty much in line with our predictions. SLT sent out an email stating they are appealing for those strident a who took Physics, Biology and Psychology. We had students who achieved E and U (never has this happened so how did the algorithm place them below a grade which has never been awarded?)

How is everyone feeling about next Thursday? Reckon BJ has Gav’s head on the chopping block?

I too want to be on the France trip! I’ll bring Haribos.

MrsHamlet · 15/08/2020 17:59

Sick. I keep telling myself I did my best and so did they... but it turns out that doesn't matter one iota.
I'm in for Haribo. And gin. I'll bring a lot of gin

motherrunner · 15/08/2020 18:05

@MrsHamlet It’s precisely that isn’t it? I remember the last time I saw Yr 11 (only about 16 of them as the rest where isolating or didn’t come in). I said they had nothing to worry about in regards to their education, the government would implement a fair system. I could cry.

I’ll bring Pringles too.

motherrunner · 15/08/2020 18:06

*were

MrsHamlet · 15/08/2020 18:09

@motherrunner you'd think we'd have known better really.
@ThrawnCow I've also just contacted the head of sixth form who definitely does check his email.

MadameMinimes · 15/08/2020 18:14

We’re appealing everything apart from the small subjects that didn’t have the statistical adjustments applied. With the guarantee that no grades will go down and the government footing the bill, we plan to do everything we can to get the students the best possible grades. You’d be mad not to put in mass appeals under the circumstances. I don’t know what the government was trying to do with these added appeal grounds but the exam boards are going to be flooded with appeals and I think there’s a very good chance they will be waved through to avoid prolonging the outraged headlines. I’d imagine this is the last thing the boards needed this close to the autumn exam series and they will want it over with as painlessly as possible. I saw that the Head of Brampton Manor is appealing their entire cohort’s results and I’ve seen a big 6th form college locally with a really good track record of results say on Twitter that they are appealing 40% of their grades too.

monkeytennis97 · 15/08/2020 18:57

@FrippEnos thank you for the other thread. Thanks

TheHoneyBadger · 15/08/2020 19:00

Fuck it. I’m bringing class a’s and sambucca. I better sit up front with the reception teachers and sick buckets. I’ve got 14 days quarantine to get over the hangover and comedown. I’ll be grand so long as we’re not bringing kids.

Appuskidu · 15/08/2020 19:02

He didn’t do mocks, but did do AS (got an A). I’m not sure about the CAG but am going through the appeals route with the school so hopefully they’ll let us know.

It would be harsh if they don’t have a mock to use and they don’t take the AS result?

MrsHamlet · 15/08/2020 19:05

@TheHoneyBadger I have just snorted gin out of my nose!!! Definitely no kids. And no sambuca for me. Not after the last time 🤮

FrippEnos · 15/08/2020 19:16
@FrippEnos thank you for the other thread. Thanks
No problem, we are in this together.

I still can't believe that she questioned your math.

Its completely barmy.

FrippEnos · 15/08/2020 19:25

TheHoneyBadger

Could you make a fort out of the sick buckets?
