You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to beat us with then please do so elsewhere and not in the staffroom

Why don’t the Teacher Tapp questions give you an option to say ‘masks are not actually allowed at my school’?!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/07/2020 15:39

France have just made masks mandatory in all enclosed spaces. Do you think that’s the next step? I wouldn’t be surprised if the Aug 11th had something about masks in it at this point.

Although I’d be less surprised if it didn’t and it was changed after it was published.

ohthegoats · 14/07/2020 15:51

Appu - I just thought the same. No one has really even said anything about wearing them, because we were told it was not allowed. It's never been mentioned in our risk assessments.

local PHE people told him that most of the cases locally were in care homes

Local PHE told us that community transmission was high. That's why we had to have small bubbles. So that's erm... 'reassuring'? Maybe...

Appuskidu · 14/07/2020 15:51

Is that including schools in France, @RafaIsTheKingOfClay?

ohthegoats · 14/07/2020 16:06

Just had our risk assessment:

PPE available for staff if desired or if deemed necessary due to individual risk assessment.

If desired. So that's good.

CarrieBlue · 14/07/2020 17:04

French schools have closed now for summer so maybe not? Though they seem far more efficient than the circus that is our government so probably have actually thought about schools!

amp.france24.com/en/20200714-macron-wearing-masks-in-enclosed-public-spaces-to-become-mandatory-in-france?__twitter_impression=true

Doesn’t say. Can’t remember what rules they had for reopening schools.

Piggywaspushed · 14/07/2020 17:21

French kids were wearing masks before.

Piggywaspushed · 14/07/2020 17:24

That TT question really annoyed me too! I can't tweet Laura McInerney because my Head will see it but if anyone else wants to do that...?

Technically my school is some teachers wear it but I didn't select that because it suggest more can than do, and , in effect, in my school that will be first aiders, who are office staff, not teachers.

I feel like I am always selecting I don't know on TT..

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/07/2020 17:28

Teachers in primary have to wear masks around the school but not in class. Primary pupils don’t have to wear masks but should be social distancing (1m). Secondary pupils have to wear masks.

And I’m not sure the lycees (15-18 year olds) went back full time.

Appuskidu · 14/07/2020 18:11

@Piggywaspushed

Looks like there’s a green contact button on the TT website to contact them by, on the quiet!

I might write later-I don’t like the questions asking how many hours I’ve worked that day/week when I’m part time-I never know how to answer.

The masks question is a biggie though and they really could ask that in a clearer way.

Piggywaspushed · 14/07/2020 18:19

They definitely could. I am not clear why they are asking it :it's the third time.

NeurotrashWarrior · 14/07/2020 18:23

I'm fairly sure french children were wearing masks but can find out.

So many images of schools include masks?!

Regarding local rates and care homes, one Lea next to us had two cases in the whole of last week so for me locally that is reasonably reassuring right now. Who knows what next week and next month will bring?

I do sort of think he was playing a reassuring spin however. So I don't fully feel reassured! He also quoted the guardian article about children being "stoppers" to the disease according to the Germans.

I feel I need to read more around that study as I pointed out to him, I think it was done during lockdown? And Germany has lower class sizes etc.

JulyBreeze · 14/07/2020 18:27

Presume people have seen the thread (sorry can't remember where it is or even it's title/ subject) on which several teachers have said their schools are allowing them to wear masks? I was surprised, had got the impression from here and elsewhere that no schools were.

And then there's the threads saying don't you think they'll suggest/mandate masks in schools now (well in the 11 Aug guidance). Am guessing it will be only a suggestion otherwise the DfE would have to fund it.

CallmeAngelina · 14/07/2020 18:29

One of my colleagues is French and told me recently that all her nieces and nephews were wearing them and would be sent home if they turned up without them.

Useruseruserusee · 14/07/2020 18:35

Gosh the people who are saying that their child’s mental health would be impacted by wearing a mask/ their teacher wearing a mask really annoy me!

I have a toddler with a rare health condition. Part of it is respiratory and he has been ventilated for a cold before. I guess that protecting his physical health by keeping community transmission low doesn’t matter, as long as other children don’t have to see people in masks! For the vast majority of children, all you would need to do is explain to them why masks are important in age appropriate language.

mumsneedwine · 14/07/2020 18:37

I'm on that thread and I have a mask and a visor provided by school. We can wear what we feel we need and I'm v grateful to them fir allowing it. I'd like the kids to have them on too. Going to be teaching all year groups and not taking any risks I don't need too.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/07/2020 18:52

I’m fairly certain that for most children desensitisation to seeing people in masks will happen pretty quickly. I can see some people making it worse by staying inside and avoiding going out with their kids. Avoidance is always the thing you are advised not to do when it comes to anxiety.

I've had an argument with someone who was claiming she didn't want her daughter to see the world like that, full of masks. (Her daughter has T1D) But also had spent a lot of time telling people not be be afraid of the virus and everything etc.

I pointed out we mustn't project our fears on to children and just make it fun; she hastily deleted her comment as obviously that's exactly what she's doing. She's a complete conspiracy theorist and has moved onto satanic child abuse I think.

hedgehogger1 · 14/07/2020 19:03

Anyone know if this " It is strong public health advice that staff in secondary schools maintain distance from their pupils, staying at the front of the class, and away from their colleagues where possible. Ideally, adults should maintain 2 metre distance from each other, and from children." Still stands?

No mention of social distancing from students mentioned in my schools risk assessment
