You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to beat us with then please do so elsewhere and not in the staffroom.

I love neus use of the phrase ‘can do attitude’ in number 9. Throw it right back at them.

That sucks MsDragon. We’re having all year 10’s in one day a week each for the next four weeks which means only 2 forms at once in. Plus year 12’s which I haven’t looked at as I don’t teach them. Maximum of 10 learning stations per classroom, kids must have all equipment and will sign a new behaviour agreement and be sent home (allegedly) if they break it.

Sounding well managed on paper.

MsAwesomeDragon · 11/06/2020 13:15

Yes, I love the "can do" attitude in the neu statement. It's fabulously MN.

RigaBalsam · 11/06/2020 13:35

Oo what is it must have missed that?

RigaBalsam · 11/06/2020 13:36

Ahh seen it a post hadn't loaded.
Thanks Neuro

greathat · 11/06/2020 13:46

So have I @Piggywaspushed. I've just hovered over deleting the app. So close now

NeurotrashWarrior · 11/06/2020 13:59

I'm ignoring.

A fellow teacher popped on last night after a long absence and was horrified at how EVERYTHING is The TEACHER'S fault.

I CBA.

I may post the NEU statement. I'm HmmConfused at the retired lot coming back!!!

Piggywaspushed · 11/06/2020 14:04

25% of my cohort is well over 100 kids (180 if you take both years due in). I hope my union reps point this out!!

Piggywaspushed · 11/06/2020 14:04

The thread has gone! Praise be!

TheHoneyBadger · 11/06/2020 14:04

Curious as to how teachers who’ve left can be encouraged to return? It’s hard enough to return each September let alone after a long break when you gave up a stable salary because you couldn’t take it anymore.

Most of us come back by doing a bit of supply and ignore numerous offers of permanent jobs before being seduced back in with big promises and empty words (cynical? Moi?).

Maybe 5k tax free up front that you get to keep if you make it through a whole school year? Not sure even that would have enticed me when I was burned out and getting by in other work.

Mistressiggi · 11/06/2020 15:17

I've been reading this thread in reverse, which is very confusing. Finally worked out what the hill talk means! No won't be doing that either! Sorry about Pfrench's (temporary) ban.
I read this:
We should be like Scotland and only be allowed to teach our specialism
What, you can just teach random things? To be fair, here we can have something in early secondary put on our timetable, and some subjects do a combo thing (eg social subjects being taught together) but our professional body won't be happy about exam teaching if you are not qualified, and/or don't have sufficient degree credits in it. Don't your PGCE certificates specify which subjects you have trained in?
Hubs open here in the summer but won't be teachers staffing them (well might be on offer to supply staff).

JimmyGrimble · 11/06/2020 15:39

I’m waiting for all the threads that will no doubt appear IF some kind of catch up plan materialises. IF that plan prioritises vulnerable kids it will be hilarious. All the hand wringing from the right wing ghouls in the past few weeks when they thought it supported their narrative and suddenly it’ll be ‘why should they get first dibs?’ Then we’ll see.

Piggywaspushed · 11/06/2020 15:41

I'm sure we have had this subject chat before , back in the olden pre corona days!

Scotland doesn't have anything like the range of curriculum subjects as England does : some Eng GCSEs and A Levels are quite obscure. I do, however, know that Scottish teachers teach media with no qualification, for example?

Piggywaspushed · 11/06/2020 15:43

For those of you also secondary and on TeacherTapp , I had to answer every question 'I don't know' today... it's a running theme!

I do hope TT notes how many respondents reply I don't know!

SallyLovesCheese · 11/06/2020 15:43

Really pleased you're still here, Goats.

I reported the thread yesterday asking what teachers were doing. I got a nice email from MNHQ Shock saying they'll take down threads that feel inflammatory and it's gone. I'm pleased there is still some common sense lingering around.

Let's face it, Honey, they're never going to offer that kind of monetary incentive. Or any, probably. If they didn't want children "falling behind" then they should have set up something proper during lockdown or, you know, actually stood by their decision to suspend the curriculum, not expect children to now do some work and looking to teachers, retired and in-service, to make it happen in their own time.

ChloeDecker · 11/06/2020 15:43

Don't your PGCE certificates specify which subjects you have trained in?

They do but we can theoretically be asked to teach anything Sad

Asuitablecat · 11/06/2020 15:48

One of my old heads claimed that any teacher could teach anythibg, as we're paid to be teachers, not teachers of... And that anyone at all could teach English.

ohthegoats · 11/06/2020 16:08

I've had a response to my email yesterday, but I'm not getting into a chat about what they do and why they do it. Just take down stuff that is slagging off people, especially when it's every day more than once.

I've just done my class lists for next year. Holy fuck, I sort of hope we have another closure. HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

MsAwesomeDragon · 11/06/2020 16:21

I really don't want another closure next year, all my classes are ks4 or ks5 next year, and those classes take a lot more effort when setting remote learning as it matters so much more that they understand it.

Beawillalwaysbetopdog · 11/06/2020 16:27

Naively thought I'd go on a thread that's nothing to do with schools.

Thought the 'what will we be looked down on in the future for doing' thread. Made it to post 4 before 'denying children access to schools' appeared!

tadjennyp · 11/06/2020 16:30

Gosh, this exam board training is dull... Yes I am MNing while taking part in a live presentation. Can't imagine why kids wouldn't tune out of a live Zoom lesson! Hmm

CarrieBlue · 11/06/2020 16:33

One whole thread taken down and a post removed today - suddenly reporting seems worth while!

MsAwesomeDragon · 11/06/2020 16:33

tadjenny absolutely! I did a webinar about using Teams, and I was busy doing other things all the way through. I was listening, and looked up at any point I thought was important, but mostly I made a lovely birthday card for my sister. It's very pretty. But yes, I can fully understand why kids are tuning out during live online lessons.

Cantaloupeisland · 11/06/2020 16:41

This in the Independent about 2 hours ago-

Schools will not run through summer for children of key workers, Downing Street confirms

Education secretary Gavin Williamson has told MPs that schools will close over the summer holiday months, with Boris Johnson's official spokesperson confirming this would apply to key workers' children too.

"There would have been a reasonable expectation that parents would expect for schools not to be open over the course of the summer," he told reporters.

Schools stayed open during the Easter break to help parents keep working through the crisis.

StrawberryJam200 · 11/06/2020 16:43

I'm not sure that healthcare workers would agree with his implication that the crisis is over??

Good news for schools, of course, but not great for others...

HedyPrism · 11/06/2020 16:45

Someone has helpfully suggested that 'graduates who have just completed their PGCE year without jobs' could be stand in teachers.

Errrr.... maybe she's not read the guidelines that we've all been recommended for QTS and will therefore be getting NQT jobs. Certainly all but one on my course have jobs already for September.
