You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

In the other staffroom, there is rhubarb & ginger gin, along with tea and coffee.

Has anyone got a plan they are happy with yet? One that is of real tangible educational benefit AND safe?

NeurotrashWarrior · 14/05/2020 22:07

Mathew from Gateshead will struggle locally given they've got a v high local infection rate.

I don't understand the campaign as I, and all other teachers, fully agree, but it's got to be safe?! All my school's recent teaching and learning training has been based on the fact that pupils from more disadvantaged backgrounds have a learning gap that high quality T and L hugely improves, more than for pupils with advantaged backgrounds. We all
Know this. Schools going forward aren't going to be able to teach as they did.

"Could the fella on the right lend the fella on the left a book" 😂

NeurotrashWarrior · 14/05/2020 22:09

None the wiser about Brian Moore 👀

Night all

TheFallenMadonna · 14/05/2020 22:09

We have a plan for our year 10s (some teaching) and 11s (post 16 support). But definitely rota based, and we have the big advantage of high staff to student ratio (AP) and no shielding staff.

Asuitablecat · 14/05/2020 22:10

Any good graphic novels for pre teen girls who hate reading? She of The Dumping Ground obsession has never read a whole book. She only likes them with pictures and keeps.going back.to Julia donaldson. Apparently you're not allowed to swap your children during lockdown though. Even if they make you look.like a shit teacher.

tadjennyp · 14/05/2020 22:17

I know I am being thick but was does AP mean fallen ?

DreamingofBrie · 14/05/2020 22:19

ASuitableCat, have you tried the Hayao Miyazaki graphic novels? We have Spirited Away and dd and ds love it:

blackwells.co.uk/bookshop/product/9781569317914?

Appuskidu · 14/05/2020 22:20

I wonder how many parents of Year 1/6 will now be hopping mad that their child won’t be starting back at school at all!?

TheFallenMadonna · 14/05/2020 22:20

Alternative Provision. A PRU, basically.

CallmeAngelina · 14/05/2020 22:24

I listened to a discussion this morning about football matches starting up again. The guest "expert" (dunno who he was) said that even playing behind closed doors was unacceptably risky because it could still mean in excess of 200 people gathering together within the stadium area.
We are likely to have around 250 in our primary school alone after June 1st. That's OK though? Can't hear anyone calling the FA lazy scrounging bastards though.

WhyNotMe40 · 14/05/2020 22:25

Asuitablecat both my girls (6 and 8) are loving Bunny Vs Monkey books. I shuddered at first, but they are actually very funny and quite good. They are comics but it is still reading.
The other books mine have liked are the Horrid Henry series and Terry Pratchett's children's series (diggers, truckers etc)

phlebasconsidered · 14/05/2020 22:33

Shameface - I briefly thought it was Alan Moore. I have had gin after one of the worst days homeschooling ever.
Alan Moore, people. Alan Moore.

phlebasconsidered · 14/05/2020 22:37

Dreaming ofBrie- all Studio Ghibli are now on Netflix. My favourite is Howl's Castle closrly followed by Totoro. Every Halloween when they were smaller both my kids would go as NoFace.

MurrayTheDemonicTalkingSkull · 14/05/2020 22:39

@TheBenefitsPeople NASUWT are a bit of a law unto themselves, aren’t they? At least, they are in Scotland.

phlebasconsidered · 14/05/2020 22:40

Asuitablecat- there is a great graphic version of Coraline and 2 volumes of the Graveyard Book by Gaiman. I also REALLY love a collection called Beasts of Burden by Evan Dorkin which is all from a dogs point of view. Demons, cats, dogs- it's great teen girl fodder!

pinkrocker · 14/05/2020 22:42

@Asuitablecat my DD is 14 and still loves Jaquelin Wilson. DS is 12 and still howls at Timmy Failure and Diary of a wimpy kid, I despair, I've got Harry Potter, Michael Murpurgo, Piers Today, Phillip Pullman, the Hunger Games etc and still both of them go back to easy books. I shouldn't complain, they do read for pleasure. But I wish they'd challenge themselves a little!!!

phlebasconsidered · 14/05/2020 22:44

Also, how old is she? If she likes the Dumping Ground has she never tried the books? My dd loves a bit of misery core so I have a list of miserable teen books.

phlebasconsidered · 14/05/2020 22:45

Dd loves Sophie Mackenzie now - like a bigger JW. She's written tons.

CallmeAngelina · 14/05/2020 22:52

Schools should NOT be put it in the position of navigating the return from a global bloody pandemic on ifs buts and maybes.

EXACTLY!

DreamingofBrie · 14/05/2020 22:55

Phlebas, some young fella told me that when I was looking at Ghibli DVDs in HMV, but we don't have Netflix Sad. I love Spirited Away (ds went as No Face this year for WBD and not a single person knew who he was), Totoro and also quite partial to Ponyo! I need to rewatch Howl's Moving Castle and acquaint myself with the rest!

DreamingofBrie · 14/05/2020 23:04

I've just posted a question for tomorrow's webchat, asking what consultation has taken place with the unions, as the NEU say their communcations have been left unanswered.

Asuitablecat · 14/05/2020 23:12

She's 8..Did 2 chapters of Tracey Beaker and gave up. I looked into irlens a couple of years ago cos she was exhibiting signs, so.she has an overlay. Older brother is.a big reader, although he has phases, but she will.find any excuse not to. When libraries were open, she'd get the fairy books etc, but not read them. She's competent and in the more advanced group in.class (v competitive), but the reading for pleasure gene just isn't there.Reading is basically my life, and I've spent the last 20 years trying to get kids to read, so. I know I'm projecting massively.

CallmeAngelina · 14/05/2020 23:19

Another lovely bashing thread going on over in Corona. Are we expecting schools to be open as normal by September. Apologies if it seems as if you've already seen that thread a million times.
It is of course a "new" one on the same old topic, which has now descended, typically, into vile toxicity. But it won't be deleted; instead this post will be deleted for being a TAAT because it's easier.

Piggywaspushed · 14/05/2020 23:21

A few bashers have gleefully made it on to the webchat too.

Hibbetyhob · 14/05/2020 23:21

I am so unbelievably, impossibly angry about this latest guidance.

We had just about worked out a solution that allowed for social distancing as much as possible whilst also returning children to familiar spaces and familiar adults.

But no. Turns out we just need to plonk them in a room with any random adult just as long as it’s 5 days a week and meanwhile leave the rest of our children to oak national academy.
