Thinking of handing my notice in

Jessie40 · 12/05/2020 07:09

Hello, I am a LSA in year 1 and after the Pm's latest statement regarding R, Y1/6 to be going back to school I am seriously thinking about handing my notice in.
It terrifies me the thought of having that many people in such a small area. The younger ones will not understand distancing.
I love my job so I feel torn.
I can't decide whether I'm overacting or not.

Much of that was incoherent sorry. Read the dfe guidance. For us it’s 7 days but the members of our household would isolate for 14 (time to catch it from us and to develop symptoms. Not sure why you’re disagreeing with me on dfe guidance that I’ve been scrutinising given it directly effects me. Have you read it or just disagreeing on assumptions?

It’s not my choice whether parents send their children into an unsafe environment no, but it is my choice, and professional responsibility, whether I will support and enable unsafe practice.

I have undertaken strict training on safeguarding and duty of care. Disregarding that to conform to populist demands would make me negligent and unprofessional.

TheHoneyBadger · 13/05/2020 01:31

If the government wants to provide unsafe childcare they should employ people not bound by professional standards and legal safeguarding responsibilities to provide it. Meanwhile teachers will happily continue to provide education online to allow students and staff to work from home just as everyone else is being advised to do if at all possible.

If you need childcare and are not an essential worker I suggest campaigning to the government for emergency childcare provisions.

echt · 13/05/2020 03:48

It’s not that I think your points (teachers) are in valid but they definitely are delusional

Just have a think about how contradictory that is Hmm

NO matter what petition parents sign it’s government that would need to fund more teachers in order for you to have smaller classes, extra sinks

All of which protects pupils as well as staff.

Do you honestly expect to walk round a school in full PPE honestly it’s very embarrassing

What business is it of yours?

Welcome to MN Cherrybakewelll but do take yourself away with your fuck-witted goady intrusions.

Sandybval · 13/05/2020 03:55

The attitude and entltement of some parents along with the treatment by the government, it's a wonder any teachers or school staff are left. Especially TAs, part of the master plan is to ask them to stand in for teachers if needed, for minimum wage or just above? No thanks. Nothing to do with not being capable by the way, but that's unfair.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 13/05/2020 07:46

@Cherrybakewelll - I don’t think you are helping the Op with her dilemma

noideaatallreally · 13/05/2020 07:57

I have been teaching for 30 years. I have resigned.

There is no way that social distancing can be applied in schools. I am in work currently with 10 key worker students ages from 11 - 14. They cannot and will not keep 2m apart. They are very difficult to manage as some will not follow instructions as there is no real structure to the day. We still struggle to get hand gel, so I cannot see how we could possibly have enough in for even say 100 students.

My classroom, at best could hold 8 students at 2m apart - my biggest class has 34 in it. I would need them to be in on a 4 week rota to keep them safe. My room is poorly ventilated.

I am fortunate that I have enough savings to live on until my reduced pension becomes available to me. I have real anxiety about my colleagues and how they will cope, not just with the risk from Covid, but also dealing with the mental health issues of students - some of whom will have had little parental support/ encouragement to keep to a schedule and actually do some of the work that has been set for them. Behaviour management was a nightmare prior to this - I think it is going to be far worse when schools do return. I just don't have the reserves to deal with that - I'm sorry, but I am out.

Cyberworrier · 13/05/2020 08:03

TAs have already been standing in for teachers in lots of schools that can’t afford supply etc. Definitely underpaid. Not undervalued by most schools I’d hope though, they shouldn’t be.

I think I have an idea, all non-school staff need to wait in Reception to be given a visitor’s pass to come into school for the Staffroom.

whenwillthemadnessend · 13/05/2020 08:13

Zoe is a good app for r rates.

My area is 0.4

A lot of the cases we hear about are from weeks ago and care homes.

It's scary but unless there is a vaccine we are vulnerable anywhere and it's not going to disappear by September

Healthyandhappy · 13/05/2020 08:34

Well make it 0 pay til staff return why should nhs staff (nurse) have to work struggle with childcare cant have time off yet teachers can stay home chilling out on full pay at the expense of tax payers

IHateCoronavirus · 13/05/2020 08:44

chilling out on full pay Grin

Oh wait were you being serious? You are embarrassing yourself with your level of ignorance. I suggest you get yourself over to one of the many teacher bashing threads where people haven’t got a clue what school staff actually do. You might have more luck.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 13/05/2020 08:48

@Healthyandhappy you along with others are de-railing the Op's thread

roundtable · 13/05/2020 08:54

What is healthyandhappy blathering on about? Nurses are entitled to key worker places within schools.

But you just keep kicking someone down when they're broken. Is that how you keep yourself happy? Nasty behaviour.

SouthernComforts · 13/05/2020 08:59

When dd was smaller I applied for every TTO job going, it would have made my life 1000 x easier to work in a school, so I'm sure there will be a queue of people out the door willing to take these jobs if current staff resign!

Fwiw I'm back in work too, no PPE, no social distancing. I'm not thrilled, but I've got bills to pay and I'm getting on with it. Like thousands of others who were packed onto trains and buses again on Monday morning. We can't hide in our houses forever.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 13/05/2020 08:59

Precisely! The Op is asking for support and instead, this has turned into a return bun fight

People need to stay on topic

ElizabethMainwaring · 13/05/2020 09:02

Has anyone read @noideaatallreally s post?
That is so sad. 30 years of teaching.
This thread has become a disgrace.
All the anti teachers are loving putting the boot in. You're really not helping matters with this is and them shite.

Thank you for your opinion @Cherrybakewelll I am sure the Op appreciates it

People do need to stay on topic and not divert the thread

By the way do you know that you have an extra l in Bakewell(l)?

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 13/05/2020 09:12

@noideaatallreally - that is sad news that you have now felt compelled to resign.

However, I fear you are correct in that behaviour will be poor at least for the first few weeks especially whilst on a part-time learning timetable.

Reading some of the dreadful posts around this forum does not help either.

IdblowJonSnow · 13/05/2020 09:18

I wouldn't resign op. There's a fair chance schools won't go back due to the backlash. If you're genuinely flooded with anxiety you can legitimately get a sick note? Or maybe by then you'll feel differently.
Things are changing quickly and we're getting new info all the time. I'd wait.

IdblowJonSnow · 13/05/2020 09:24

'Hiding in our houses forever'.
To the people making comments like the above we've only been 7 weeks of lockdown. We've lost between 32,000 and 50,000 people in the space of a few months and over 600 people died yesterday alone. Its not surprising people are scared, hardly a storm in a teacup FFS.

inflamaboob · 13/05/2020 10:32

I can totally understand the anxiety and I really think it's personal choice, I don't think anyone would blame teachers for quitting. It's a massively anxious time for a lot of people. Some people just dont want to take the risk and that's ok.

What I would say as a nurse that's been in this position, is it may not be as bad as you fear. I seriously thought about quitting in March. People were being redeployed all over the place, forced to do shift work, no childcare, no PPE, managers that were working from home telling us to 'leave if you don't like it'. It was enormous stressful but it has settled down. It is different but fine.

70% of my team have had Covid since lockdown. Everyone so far has been ok. The majority are from high risk groups. Colleagues were asking for 14 day isolation when one of us came down with it but were told no. Social distancing isn't possible in our office although we do try as much as possible. I'm community nursing and we don't wear masks aside from patient contact. We clean a lot but there's been no additional deep cleaning of the health centre.

Our team has really pulled together through all of this which is nice, managers have reappeared and are being supportive. Things change constantly so I would bide your time and see how it goes. As someone said before if you or your family have symptoms, you need to self isolate.

HopeMumsnet · 13/05/2020 10:34

Hi there,
We have removed some posts from this thread and would once again remind posters that this is the Staffroom board. Of course it would be absurd to police the profession of every poster but if you're not a teacher it might be best to think of yourself as a bit of a guest in the space?
As to removing the Staffroom from Active, we're looking into that right now. We can see that it would help the situation.

Piggywaspushed · 13/05/2020 10:38

Thanks hope.
